Correct. Because of what it would cost to get Lugo it's definitely right. I like Lugo, but I'll take Walker at 2B and Cedeno at SS any day if it means we keep our young trading chips for bigger trade acquisitions.

If this were the case yes but Perez is going to start at SS or 2B.

If Perez is going to play, I want Cedeno playing. I don't want Walker and Perez playing with Cedeno rotting on the bench. Perez played gold glove caliber defense last year. Throw Cedeno in at second. But the Cubs could use more left-handed pop.

Defensively - Perez is excellent. Overall, it has to be Cedeno & Walker. It is an odd situation, but one the Cubs keep finding themselves in.

BTW, have you heard of V&F Transformers? I used to buy from them a few years back. Quality people from Bartlett, IL. I even visited the plant and Mr. Foderaro took me & the wife to a Cub game (we sat 3 rows behind the 1st base dugout!).

Who knows, maybe the other GMs in baseball will save Hendry from himself.

I just don't understand why the Cubs can't pull a Red Sox, and have Walker play the first 7/8 innings, and if the Cubs have the lead late in the game bring in a defensive replacement for Walker. Why can't they do that? They can keep Walker's bat, and have "defense" in the late part of the game.

That would require an imaginative approach to the game and some level of intelligence. Baker has shown no possession of either during his tenure.

Nah. Just start Neifi, right Dusty?

Yea, that's what I've been thinking, although this is Dusty we're talking about.

Perez is only a great player as a backup.

Other than that he is trash, i Think endry realized that last year, and from the sounds dusty at the convention. He finally may be realizing this.

It's up to Dusty to play the young guys, but he has had a year to look at them last year.

As long as they do moderate in Spring training, dusty will be on the bandwagon for cedeno and murton.

Well see. but hendry may have put the foot down on perez.

No way the Cubs were going to resign an injury prone Nomar. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

This is one of the few moves this winter that I don't want Hendry's head for. IT would have been an easy and popular move to re-sign him after his end run of 2005, but if he went down again, he would have been crucified for the move.

No doubt. Hendry would have been blasted if he had brought him back and he got injured. Also, I have a prediction that if Nomar has a very good year with the Dodgers, many Cubs fans will be blasting Hendry for not re-signing Nomar. But his decision to not resign him was made much easier, with the young talented Cedeno from his own system. I think both Cedeno and Murton will be the best position players from our own system in a while. Its nice to finally have some position talent from our own farm system.

Right?

Straight up and on it's face--no. Their 3-year avg and OBP are nearly identical. The SLG is just .050 or so off. Lugo more than makes that up in Defense (he's a SS/2B and Walker is a 2B/DH--and hits allowed are just as important as hits created), SB (the 3-year differential is, IIRC, Lugo 70SB and 15 CS over Walker's totals) and Speed in general (stats don't pick up bases advanced).

The rest depends upon what you have to give to get Lugo. That we don't know the answer to.

For one, Todd Walker will not be a Cub come opening day. Secondly, isn't the pitching staff the one leading the charge saying they don't want him out there? Can't remember where I hear that, but they were not pleased with his defense up the middle and felt that his lack of ability in turning the double play hurt the Cubs last year. (No links, just remember seeing that somewhere)

I remember that. I think the pitchers should worry about their own jobs and cover first on a groundball hit on the right side.

Hey Cuse, did you grow up in Syracuse? if so what high school did you go to and when did you graduate? A couple of friends of mine went to Jamesville Dewitt (I think that is the name)

Ditto that. They should worry about their own jobs. Despite the fact some of you read that, I wonder how much of it is true. Was it just one pitcher or several pitchers. Either way I don't like to see teammates try and run someone out of town, unless they're an attitude problem. Walker isn't an attitude problem.
