In this morning's Trib. Quick summary:

- Prior: "I have no desire to leave. There was a report that I wanted to jump ship and go to the west coast. I have no desire [to go]."

- Prior was not offered by the Cubs. The O's asked for him. (per Baker) Prior is set to meet with Hendry today.

- Walker is considered the starting 2B and no. 2 hitter. (Baker)

- D Rays want Cedeno in return for Lugo; Cubs do not wish to trade Ronny.

- Baker undecided about who will hit second (?), fifth, and eighth.

- Cubs may not be done dealing.

- Baker and Hendry were received mostly with cheers; some boos.

I think we can relax and lay off Hendry a bit with regard to the notion that he is looking to deal Prior / screwed up his relationship with him.

Last night at the convention they mentioned that Mark Prior likes to spend time on the internet message boards. Is he registered here?

Just a thought - I am surprised that more people are not posting their reactions to this news. I realized after I posted it that it has been briefly discussed in the Lugo thread, but I think its a big deal.

EDIT:

In addition, I thought that most of the above should be considered good news, especially by the membership here. It seems that the vast majority of us were against trading Prior for Tejada, and many were upset that Prior might feel slighted and decide to leave the Cubs (a la Maddux in 92') As such, there was much preemptive flaming at Hendry.

Isn't this good news in an otherwise disappointing offseason?

If true, yes it good news, and very relieving. It's also interesting that Hendry and Prior are meeting today. The most important thing Hendry can do right now is make sure the core (Z, Prior, ARam, Lee and Barrett) stay intact and content.

I am also very happy to read that the Cubs want to keep Ronny. I want to see him in our MIF for years to come.

Agreed. If we're going to compete, we need to allow some young players to break in. Murton and Cedeno are the perfect two, IMO. They have the skillset to be consistent, which is something that's been lacking in the last few prospects that have come up.

Maybe I'm bitter, but I just don't believe it. They have to backtrack on the Prior thing since Tejada isn't going anywhere. Baker says Walker is the 2B and #2 hitter, but I still doubt Walker is on the team. Prior gave a very good PC answer like he should. I wouldn't trade Cedeno for Lugo either. I think Lugo can be had cheaper than that.

If Baker says Walker is the #2 hitter, why does he say he is unsure who will hit 2nd, 5th, and 8th? Does that mean he knows who will hit 6th and 7th? Why do I even try to read into Dusty's words, they are meaningless.

I'm not happy with some of the moves Hendry made (primarily Jones and Neifi), but I am happy that he hasn't made several moves that apparently were on the table (Prior for Tejada or Abreau, Ronny C + whoever for Lugo, etc...). I don't like the idea of sacrificing pitching for offense. Apparently, Jim doesn't either, nor does he buy into the bogus theory that Prior is injury prone.

I hope you are right. Seriously, I would hate to see Cedeno or Prior traded.

I expected Prior to tell off the Cubs and Hendry and announce his desire to bolt to any other team that will give him money after he becomes a FA.

part of Mark Prior's anatomy is registered here.

And I, for one, am hoping you're referring solely to his calves.

Did anyone take a pic of the sign at the front door of the hotel?

It reads:

"Free buffet for cheering Baker and Hendry!!!!!"

I don't think we can simply count Cedeno as a top asset because he hit .300 in 80 ABs as a callup.

I'd trade him for Lugo. Why not? Cedeno could bust out of the league by June. Lugo's mediocre/slightly above average, but at least he's proven to be a MLB player.

I seriously doubt there is a straight-up deal on the table Cedeno for Lugo.

Lugo's mediocre, but he's "proven"? Huh? If mediocrity is what you're striving for, why not give Ronny a chance?

Because Lugo is already 30, he's coming off a career year, and he'll be a free agent at the end of this season. He's not going to sign cheaply.

I'd greatly prefer to give Cedeno a long look at short.

Assistant Harris County District Attorney Catherine Evans told jurors Mabely Lugo signed a sworn statement that her husband grabbed her by the hair and forced her head into their vehicle at Minute Maid Park and told the same story to nine individuals involved in the case. Mabely Lugo testified Tuesday she had exaggerated the account and that her husband wasn't trying to harm her.

Evans told jurors during closing arguments Wednesday that it is not uncommon for victims of domestic violence to change their stories.

"She was not happy to be here,'' Evans said. "She is protective of her husband. She is anxious. She is nervous. I don't blame her. How sad is it to hear a woman say over and over, 'I hit myself with the truck. I provoked him. It was my fault.'''

It's not that I really care either way. I think we're probably going to have substandard play from the position regardless. It's not something I feel strongly about, but yeah I'd make that trade. Weren't rumors flying around that we were offering Williams + another player for Lugo? That sounds much more insane to me. Maybe I'm mixing my rumors though
