I think this is the worst I've felt about a game since Hawkins' implosion against the Mets in 2004.

In other words, I was confident, but I had a bad feeling that an ill wind was approaching. When they went down 10-0, I did not think that this team had what it took to come back. Strange how the offense was the unit that performed above and beyond all expectations today.

Yet, the defense crumbled. It was something that I've been seeing ever since that debacle against Pittsburgh. They rallied against Atlanta, but then they went right back to sucking in Green Bay. This time around it wasn't poor tackling. Instead, it was a bad game plan. They let one guy shred them to pieces.

I think this team has a much better future than the 2001 team did. They have younger players, more talent, and better coaching (although, after today, I have to wonder HOW much better). Grossman looked awesome when he shook off his early jitters. This is a team that could contend for the playoffs over the next few years on a regular basis.

A few acquisitions need to be made through FA and the draft, but this team could make a Super Bowl run next season.

I think the Bears need to completely start over at TE. Draft one early. Sign a FA. Draft one late. I don't think they need a possession WR. I really don't know what that means. I think Muhammad, Berrian, and Bradley are a very good start. I don't understand the love for Randle El. He's not better than the first 2 and I wouldn't want to play him over a healthy Bradley. And you still have Currie. I don't want to pay Twan for his punt returning abilities and being a #4 WR. Gage needs to go, though.

I agree with the defensive needs. Brown and McGowan are a good start at SS. Harris should be back at FS. It would be nice to get a veteran FA to start over Harris though.

What could we get for Peterson in a trade? I like AP, but with Benson in year 2, and TJ he is more valuable as trade bait.

Unfortunately not much. If I recall, some good RB went for 4th round picks this year. That's why I've never understood taking Benson when we already had 2 solid RB.

I wonder if anyone is gonna mention that we got outcoached by Fox like Tiki did last week.

Brown cannot stay on the field, even after taking 7 weeks off for what should have been a very meh injury. He's great when healthy, but in football (unlike baseball), every game means so much more, and you can't rely on a guy who just cannot complete a season (or a PLAYOFF game) in that kind of role. The SS in that defense is so important, and it has to be played by a regular, not a backup.

I'm not saying spend money on a SS. Draft a SS on day one, along with a TE and a O lineman.

Draft a TE (and a FB) who can block too. The FB from Wisconsin and Vernon Davis or Marcedes. I don't care much for WR. One OT, one OG from the draft. One of them has to be a second rounder.

Agree with your defensive needs.

I understand people are disappointed. But here are some facts.

1. Charles Tillman is a good corner. He had a horrible game.

2. Losing Mike Brown hurt a lot. I like Chris Harris, but something tells me he was supposed to be in position on a couple of those plays. (the simulataneous catch by Smith, the 2nd Smith TD).

3. Rex Grossman had a solid game. Not great, but not sure what more he could have done.

Tillman and the coaching staff lost this game. Horrible gameplan. No adjustments.

Well said.

Lovie Smith's press conference:

-didn't play well enough to win

-offensively, 21pts would have been enough normally

-Rex through well, Berrian did well

-defensively, planned for no big plays

-planned to stop smith but didn't happen

-no excuses, they played better

-planning for next year, looking for plan

-Tillman-more safety help on some of those plays

-3 deep zone on Smith's big plays

-substitution problem not an issue on goalline TD

-had a chance to win at end

He's taken lesson from the Jim Hendry school of speaking while saying nothing.

don't forget claiming to not make excuses while making a dozen or so

I really don't want to sound like I'm defending Lovie Smith here, but as I watched his press conference, it was clear that he really wasn't making excuses. He was just explaining why they lost. Maybe there isn't a big difference but he was trying to be honest.

So you think he's too stupid to know that not double covering smith was a horrible, horrible coaching mistake? all he said as a reason for losing was "they played better."

He never attempted to point to the actual reasons they scored so many points

No matter what we say, there's no way the Bears will not have Mike Brown on there team starting the 2006 season. I'm not sure if us fans, truly know the extent of the injury. For the first two weeks that he missed, the media still wasn't sure what he was suffering from. I'd rather have an injured player on the bench than an injured player on the field. I'd rather have a hurt player on the field than on the bench or in the locker room. I think this team has bigger holes to fill than SS and I hope the front office addresses those first.

I agree that it should not be priority one, or even priority 3, but it should be something they address.

I don't see how anyone can pin this loss on the offense. The defense was the real problem. 434 yards and 29 points allowed, at home no less. Pathetic.

He didn't get into any adjustments the coaching staff made during the game. He addressed Steve Smith by saying they planned on containing him and they simply didn't get the job done. You can take that statement and lay it at the players' feet or an indictment of the coaching staff.

the media rip session has already started on Comcast. Rightfully so.

As long as it includes Ron Turner's baffling playcalling and Ron Riviera's nonexistent scheme, and does not include second guessing Kyle/Rex, let it commence.

I honestly don't see how one can second guess Rex given his recovery from the first 25 minutes of the game. Yes, he made some really stupid passes, but does anyone expect Orton to have done better?

No. I don't blame Rex. Of the inexperienced QBs that were in the playoffs, can't a case be made that Rex played the best? How many TD drives did Eli Manning mastermind against this Carolina D? And with all those weapons at his disposal?

No. After he settled down, Rex gained some decent experience and kept us in the game long after the D had blown it.

I blame mostly the non-existent defense in this game. Tillman: can you say suckage?

Any chance Tillman gets waived? Is Azuman a better shut-down corner? The secondary should definatley be a off-season area to improve. Build it around Vasher & Harris & the Bears will be fine.

No way Tillman gets waived and no, Azumah is not a better CB than Tillman. Tillman had a bad game, but he's better than he showed today. But Tillman definitely isn't a #1 corner, he has to play one though on this team. I don't know if I'd want to build a secondary around Harris.

Zoom is faster than Tillman, but I don't think they'll keep him because that hip injury appears to be chronic, and he didn't seem to have the same ability after the injury. Truly unfortunate. Zoom has been with us for years & years, he's gone from a running back to a decent corner/pro bowl special teamer, and I've met the guy at practices----he's always a pleasure, spends loads of time signing autographs for children & adults. Always a smile on his face, never looks down his nose at ANYONE.

I think they'll stick with Tillman, look for a nickel corner in free agency or draft/scrap heap.

So what do we have to look forward to now since we know the Cubs are gonna blow?

Find a hobby that doesn't involve sports... as for me, I get to look forward to the Flyers getting my hopes up and then inevitably crushing them.
