From John Clayton's preview:

The Panthers can't spot the Bears 10 points early and expect to win.

I read Clayton's preview and it was horrible. Guess what? Any team who turns the ball over resulting in 10 points for the other team is probably going to lose the game. He also claimed that the Panthers "are a different team" which defies all logic.

Why is nobody talking about Thomas Jones in the lead up to this game? All I hear is Grossman and foster

Carolina stopped Tiki Barber pretty handily. If they play as well as they did last week, the running game for the Bears probably will be non existant.

i haven't heard much about Foster...more so Steve Smith, but Grossman has definitely been the guy receiving the most attention on the Bears side, and deservedly so since he wasn't even in the game they played during the regular season.

In Week 11 Jones had 25 carries for 87 yards for a 3.1 yard avg.

Tiki had 13 carries for 41 yards for a 3.2 yard avg.

The problem is that the Giants expect much more out of Tiki, and they gave up on the run too quickly. Those 13 carries were the only carries that NY had. That's terrible.

If Jones gets the same number of carries this week that he did in week 11, he'll start to get some yards late, like he always does after the defense starts to wear down some.

Edited for ease of reading.

Peterson had more success against the Panthers last time than Jones. They're different kinds of backs and I'd like to see Peterson get a few more carries this time.

In Week 11 Peterson had 4 carries for 37 yards and a 9.3 average.

Jones's longest run that week was 20 yards and Petersens 19.

I like the way the Bears mix the two backs. Jones gets out there and wears the defense out. Then get Petersen in there and throw some of that quickness at them.

We have 3 backs with 3 styles so that is a plus.

I really don't want to see Benson out there much though. He's been out for the bulk of the season for one reason or another, and frankly unless it's a blowout in either direction (which I don't forsee), I'd rather he just watch and soak in the playoff atmosphere, and be there in case (God forbid) one of the other 2 goes down.

I thought it was the panthers game plan to spot the bears 10 points early and win anyways. I guess thats why I will never be a big time football anaylist like John Clayton.

A key matchup that no one is talking about:

Rex Grossman vs. Kenny Lucas/Chris Gamble/Ricky Manning (two of the best corners in the league, plus one in Manning who came up huge last time we were in the playoffs).

Yeah, but they changed the rules after that year so that cornerbacks can't cheat, tackle, bite, mug, etc., WRs coming off the line of scrimmage. So Manning will not be that effective.

Great point. The Giants gave up on the run. Of course, they were behind, but that was the problem. I think the more you run on any team, the more you wear them down. You saw Pittsburgh do that to the Bears D this year. It's alot easier to stop a WR, when everyone knows you want to pass.

As for the "spotting points" thing. I don't understand why this term has been a big deal. When a team gets a lead, they are "spotted" a lead. I believe Delhomme was basically saying that his team couldn't come back because the Bears got a 2 score lead. 10 points for the Bears is about 5 quarters worth of offense.

And when did Gamble and Lucas become known as some of the best corners in this league? Gamble is on his 2nd year.

Gamble is ranked 20th...14 places behind Tillman, 2 ahead of Vasher.

Lucas is 30th.

FWIW, when it comes to baseball Sportsline's rankings are absolutely worthless. It's the same system for football, but I don't know how they came to the rankings.

Quite possible. Was just the rankings I knew how to get relatively quickly. I'm open to any other player rankings that are out there.

They're completely worthless for football as well. Last year Briggs was their #1 LB in the NFL. I love Briggs, don't get me wrong, but best LB in the NFL last year he was not.

Sweet! According to Rotoworld, Deshaun Foster is playing Washington on Saturday, so that should really make the Sunday game much easier on the Bears....

DeShaun Foster (toe) returned to practice Thursday and is listed as probable.

With 316 rushing yards the past two games, Foster has been on a tear. He'll get a chance against Washington on Saturday. Ricky Proehl (illness) also returned to practice and is probable. Jan. 12 - 6:01 pm et

Carolina has the 9th ranked passing defense(191.1) while Chicago has the 5th(179.5)

Bears allowed only 61 points at home all season.

Carolina has allowed 259 points for the season while the Bears have allowed 202.

Carolina(91.6) has the 4th best rushing defense while Chicago (102.3)has the 11th.

Lucas is a fantastic shut down corner. Ask Plaxico Burress.

Gamble is a decent cover corner, but I agree that he's never really had any game where he made a game turning play or really stopped a wideout. His INTs have mostly been the result of QBs avoiding Lucas.

And I'm about to get flamed terribly for this, but I don't think the Bears' secondary is all that great. It's just that the front seven is so damn good that QBs never have time to dissect the secondary and look for the right pass consistently. That was certainly the case in the Week 11 meeting.

Banedon, it's possible, just a tiny little glimmer of possibility, that the reason Thomas Jones had so many more carries than Tiki did in their games against Carolina was that the Bears were up 10-0 in that game before you could blink an eye, whereas the G-men never had a lead to work with.

The real question is when has Plaxico ever shown up for a big game? I can assure you the Panther's DBs look that much better because of the same reasons you mentioned about the Bears CBs. QB's avoiding Lucas? Come on man is his middle name Champ Bailey? I think you are overrating your CBs a bit.

but his lack of playing time could help the Bears. There is little chance that the Panthers "have a book on him" yet. Might as well put him out there a couple of times to see if he can break off a big run or two.

Or its possible that the Giants coaching staff let their team down by having a horrible game plan, and not being very prepared for the game. After watching the Giants play, I would lean toward that.

I disagree, but I'm a bears fan and we enjoy our defensive smotherings
