The Cubs, who have offered pitcher Mark Prior to the Orioles, have told the Orioles they want an answer shortly or will move on

Either hendry sweetened a deal including Prior or offered something like:

Murton, Hill, Pie for Tejada

Luckily, there are now rumored to be 6 teams in the mix interested in Tejada. Detroit being the latest (which makes no sense at all) which gives Baltimore the luxury of being patient, something the Cubs appear to be running out of.

At the Cubs conventions... Have the GM/audience sessions been anything more than typical fluff sessions?

What does "move on" mean?

I wonder what the urgency is.

"According to sources, at least two teams have offered the Orioles a more attractive package than the current Ramirez and Clement offer the Red Sox have been dangling."

Ramirez and Clement sounded pretty attractive. What 2 teams topped that, and with which players?

Is it possible Detroit offer Guillen, Bonderman and a prospect?

I cannot see Tejada being happy in Detriot.

If Balt. could get Guillen, Bonderman, and a prospect for Tejada, they'd have to do the deal. They improve the team and save money at the same time.

I can't imagine Detroit trading Bonderman, though. Hendry's Socrates is smarter than that.

What if Detroit substituted Robertson and Maroth for Bonderman, and Baltimore added Bedard?

I can see it now. We use Murton as a trade chip and our OF will be Grisson, Pierre, and Jones. If that happens I will lose it.

For Tejada at SS (without giving up Prior) I could almost live with it.

Grissom in the OF would be beyond hideous, though. Craig Wilson, please.

I had always been under the impression that they wanted Prior not that we offered them Prior...that is disturbing

Detroit would be insanely stupid to trade for Tejada. They're not going to win this year. Tejada won't want to play there. He'll ask for a trade next offseason (which can allow him to be a free agent if they don't) and they'll be out of luck, and have lost Guillen, Bonderman and a prospect. (By the way, I'm not trashing your proposed deal - just asking why Baltimore and Detroit are talking in the first place. It defeats the whole purpose of Tejada wanting to leave to go win with another team.)

Baltimore could trade him there out of spite.

Detroit has shown a willingness to overpay for big names in recent years. To many ballplayers that means more for "trying to win" than actual smart moves would mean.

Here's the problem I find with the Tejada deal....if he wants to play on a winning team, why would he want to play for the Cubs?

And if we give up Prior for Tejada, 06 is gonna be a really long season. This whole team is built around having a healthy SP staff full of three aces and two #3 starters (one of which is arguably one of the top fifteen pitchers of all time). Our offense this year is not close to being good enough if Wood's health is questionable all year and Prior is playing in Baltimore.

Baltimore and the Cubs aren't on the same level as far as recent years. They are going on about 8 straight years of sub .500 baseball, and don't look to be any better. The Cubs have been over .500 3 of the past 5 years, and in the playoffs twice since BMore's last trip. In addition, they've been shedding payroll, while the Cubs have consistently added payroll.

He's also on record talking about wanting to see progress toward winning. To players, progress toward winning = spending more and more, the Cubs are doing that more so than the O's.

And it's not entirely his choice where he goes. He really sounds like he wants out of BMore, and as long as he doesn't end up in Pittsburgh, Cincy, Tampa or Kansas City, he might be happy to leave.

Makes sense to me....

I think gaining Tejada and losing Prior will make this team even worse, though.

I think it could make them worse, but probably makes them stagnant in the present, and worse in the future.

That is so very true....

That's really been my outlook on the situation the entire time.

Between and elite position player (I'm skeptical if it applies to Miggy, by the way) and an elite pitcher, you take the pitcher.

The Cubs would actually be a better option for Miggy imo. Perhaps Miggy realizes that when he gets traded to the Sox, he wouldn't be on the same team as Manny and they'd have two big gaps in the outfield to fill - probably with fairly average players.

But the Cubs have a far better chance to improve when Miggy joins us....but that's just my humble view :)
