  1. Aside from Lee's unfortunate accident, I was wondering if we are having far more serious injuries than other teams - or is that just because of a subjective point of view ? I remember when Prior was way overused by Baker a few years ago, with many people here saying he (Baker) was risking his (Prior) health. And I can't exactly say he's been very healthy for such a young guy. So, is this just bad luck or is the club just not taking good care of their players ? Theoretically speaking a 20 year old pitcher should be less injury prone than a 40 year of pitcher. Why am I saying this ? Well, the italian soccer (excuse me: football) team AC Milan have had many long term injuries to some of their very expensive signings. A few years ago, they started to seriously analyze this and found out that a few thing influenced the risc of injuries - one of the biggest reasons was the food they consumed during their 'off time'. Their players are now obliged to report all the food they eat (from dinners to candy) and guess what ? Now they hardly have any injuries anymore. I'm just wondering if this team should take better care of Wood and Prior. Any thoughts ?
  2. Amen.......also we got to post season because the Astros completely collapsed. Beating the Braves in postseason was with the help of great game by Wood in Atlanta and the hugely dissapointing Braves (Sheffield being Mr Choke #1). I know, in sports people always win partially because the other guy fails and eventhough I found it to be a very exciting few months in 2003, I never felt like it was a team effort, but always a matter of a solid pitcher and one or two guys having a big night on offensive. While Sosa had some great nights, I also remember him tring to go for the homer, while just a rbi single would have been enough. Ever since Baker joined this team the inconsistent performance of the team has been very clear. And everyone with a bit of common sense should be able to agree that Baker did a very risky thing by overusing Prior that much. No manager should put the health of a player on the line for short term gain......
  3. Didn't he already pass that point in his career in his last season here in Chicago ? He should have stopped right after we lost against the Marlins - he had some huge homers and good games. But I guess this really shows he was only playing for himself afterall.....
  4. When reading the actual article, I feel that the inclusion of Williams isn't at all founded on anything except the guesswork of the writer :) Who knows who it'll be - might as well be Btw, I don't agree that Soriano is only marginally better than Walker - I rather have the idea that we can hardly expect anything offensive from Walker, while Soriano has a lot of potential....although I doubt if the Cubs would be the best place for him to work on his negative stuff. Anyway, from Rotoworld.com: (paraphrasing) Patterson could be traded today already to either the O's or an undisclosed NL team - which rotoworld says should be the Nats. Very curious - gonna keep an eye on the news today :)
  5. Maybe it's old news for some (sorry if it is), but at rotoworld I just read a new item about the Nats being interested in Soriano. They wrote that the Nats will likely have to deal away Soriano, so to them, it seems like the perfect scenario. (Perhaps a new twist to an old rumor ?) Anyway, Soriano for Patterson sound like a lot of value - although the article below writes about the inclusion of one pitcher in such a deal, which might as well be Williams. That sounds like a very good deal, since both are totally expendable anyway. This is the original article Roto was quoting from: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060108cubs,1,1563826.story?coll=cs-home-headlines&ctrack=1&cset=true Again, sorry if this old stuff - it was new to me.
  6. Forgot about Hendry: I just don't believe that this guy makes all these stupid ideas up on his own - don't the guys around him have any ideas/brains of their own ? To answer the original question: No ;)
  7. Baker hasn't changed ever since he joined the Cubs...he's always been this lousy at managing a group of people. I've been saying it for almost 2 years now on this board - Baker should make his own decissions and NOT listen so much to what players want. The team should always be more important than the individual. He's let guys like Sosa and Patterson complain publically about the team and their position on many occasions without any consequentes. When Baker finally stepped in, it was already way too late. And I'm fed up with this stupid Toothpick act. Anyway, this team needs a GOOD manager that can make decissions, who's not afraid of failure and who respects his team BUT always remains in the drivers seat.
  8. Baltimore and the Cubs aren't on the same level as far as recent years. They are going on about 8 straight years of sub .500 baseball, and don't look to be any better. The Cubs have been over .500 3 of the past 5 years, and in the playoffs twice since BMore's last trip. In addition, they've been shedding payroll, while the Cubs have consistently added payroll. He's also on record talking about wanting to see progress toward winning. To players, progress toward winning = spending more and more, the Cubs are doing that more so than the O's. And it's not entirely his choice where he goes. He really sounds like he wants out of BMore, and as long as he doesn't end up in Pittsburgh, Cincy, Tampa or Kansas City, he might be happy to leave. Makes sense to me.... I think gaining Tejada and losing Prior will make this team even worse, though. The Cubs would actually be a better option for Miggy imo. Perhaps Miggy realizes that when he gets traded to the Sox, he wouldn't be on the same team as Manny and they'd have two big gaps in the outfield to fill - probably with fairly average players. But the Cubs have a far better chance to improve when Miggy joins us....but that's just my humble view :)
  9. True.....and isn't the Boston left field with the green monster far easier for Manny than say the O's left field ? I wonder if anyone ever calculated how many extra runs he's costed. All those rbi's don't have to mean a thing, when you score 3 or 4 at a time, and dont'score any when your teams needs them the most. For that matter I guess Ortiz has outperformed Manny in a big way with effective scoring.

    Wood

Damn, this guy can only be used for like half seasons........even when healthy I just don't recognize the old 20k Woody anymore. Hope he'll be back when he's fully recovered and not too soon.
  11. That's a statement designed to raise value. True indeed. It's actually very simple what happens next: Boston is tempted to make one last offer, which will be slightly different and which will be accepted by the O's. Perhaps they'll offer Cora too........who knows.
  12. That's not a blunder, it's good negotiating. Although he does play this trick every year and teams keep falling for it. Guess most managers aren't very smart people, since the first thing you learn with negotiating is never to comply to deadlines, minimum contract demands, crap like that. Guess Boras knows who he's dealing with ;)
  13. I haven't been around much since the end of the season, but I've said this before....Soriano's downsides can be easily unlearned in half a season.....and he's got huge skills and potential - probably more that some of you guys realize. With Soriano I truly believe that he's got more to offer than what his stats show. It's just that I wonder is Dusty would be the right guy to improve Soriano.....
  14. Agree. But replace "think" with "know for sure". Having Dusty take care of your team is like having Michael Jackson take care of your children.
  15. I don't know about people on this board that could be a good GM, but I do know that a lot of people could be a better skipper than Dusty. ;) Although I guess it's sort of a quality when you're able to make people underachieve in a constant way. Seriously though, I do think that a good skipper can make a good team better and a bad skipper can make a good team worse - that he's a bigger influence on the team's collective performance that any possible player could have. What I'm saying is that winning 85 or 90 games a year depends more on the skipper than on having or not having a good leadoff hitter for instance.
  16. I agree. And it'll be a bigger upgrade mental/attitude wise than just stats and skill wise imo.
