I thought Burnitz signed with Baltimore a couple days ago?

Multiple reports out of Baltimore last week said Burnitz had agreed to a two-year deal with the Orioles worth between $10 million and $12 million. But Howard Simon, Burnitz's Connecticut-based agent, insisted yesterday that no deal had been struck and that he had told reporters only that he was "staying in close touch" with the Orioles.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review[/url]"]The Pirates have agreed to terms with free-agent outfielder Jeromy Burnitz on a one-year contract for 2006 with a mutual option for 2007 and a buyout. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately known, but Burnitz made $4.5 million last season with the Chicago Cubs and will likely make more than that with the Pirates.

So we now get the Pirates first round draft pick, right? I know Burnitz is a Type A, but I honestly don't know for sure how the system works.

Ouch.

Burnitz has topped 100 strikeouts in each of his nine full seasons of Major League Baseball, including 109 last year, but management says it believes it can minimize that by surrounding him with good contact men such as Casey and Randa.

Ha. I guess Derrek Lee and A-Ram were bringing out the worst in Burnitz.

This is not a knock against Burnitz, but how sad is it that he may be signing "the richest deal in free agent history"?

Wow....

Schnikies

That should read "the richest deal in Pirates free agent history."

So what's his status, is he arbitration eligible? (Wilson)

I don't know much about him, but the numbers look good. Why would Pittsburgh not want him back?

Tough to ignore Craig Wilsons 169 K's in 2004. Although last season he was injured most of the year, he still was right on pace for 150+

His OBP and power are much tougher to ignore. K's are not a crippling negative.

16, 18, 29, 5 is not exactly a power hitter. He has some pop but nothing to write home about. His OBP is nice, but not telling of his whole game.

Wilson's arbitration eligible, I think 2nd year. There have been newspaper quotes that Wilson doesn't fit in with "Tracyball", which is apparently what Jim Tracy wants to do with the club.

Power is NOT Home Runs. I can't understate how important that is, and it needs to be repeated. Wilson's career .220 IsoP is very good, he's a good to very good offensive corner outfieder.

EDIT: For his career, a HR every 22 PA's isn't bad at all either.

If Power is NOT Home Runs, what is it then?

Getting past first base by yourself. ALL extra base hits make up a player's power, and Wilson is very good at hitting for it, even if you only consider HR.

At best, Craig Wilson is a poor mans Geoff Jenkins. With the exception that Jenkins is a better defensive outfielder and can actually hit the ball during the day. Craig can't exactly say that.
