Nope, nothing wrong with a spring training flier, who knows, he might have rested up and look good. And if he does he'd be a perfect guy to take those left handed pitchers off of Jacque's back :D

says the cubs are second in the tejada talks because they won't part with Z. nothing new there.

also reports that grissom will be given a non-guaranteed contract to get a look at him in ST.

nothing wrong with ST invite imo.

agreed. as long as we're not guaranteeing him anything, i'm cool. but i do worry that he'll perform well enough in ST that dusty will fall in love and screw with murton's time in LF. anyone can catch fire for a few weeks.

precisely why this is a bad decision. regardless of how he looks in ST, he is a player we don't want on the team.

You mean you wouldn't accept his 2002 to 2004 splits against left handed pitchers on your team, presuming that, say, 90% of his at bats come against left handed pitchers?

I thought people LIKED a .900+ OPS...

You can't ignore his '05, especially since he's nearly 40.

I just remember when we gave Lenny Harris a spring training invite and I thought, "Nothing wrong with that." Then, I watched Lenny Harris start at third base and even bat lead-off and I discovered what was wrong with it.

Thats exactly it. If he does even ok in spring training then you know Dusty is gonna trot him out there for the regular season. Its like giving a 2 year old a power drill and just not plugging it in. When he figures out how to start it, he's screwed.

you could get the same production from murton so why bring grissom into the equation (even if Grissom can still do it)?

In theory, Grissom would be replacing Jones vs. LH pitching, not Murton. As Homer Simpson says "In Theory, Communism works, In theory."

nice double-entendre! well, he's better than macias.

Cubs still need another OF for the bench since Patterson is as good as gone. And the last OF should be a RH bat (or switch-hitter), since you already have Mabry.

Grissom, Mabry, Neifi, Hairston and Blanco would be a decent enough bench (I'm assuming Cedeno and Walker are the starting double play combo).

Unless I've missed something, Eduardo Perez is still available, I would definitely prefer him to Grissom (Eduardo can play 1B and 3B), but Grissom would be OK against LHP. Hard to imagine him getting more than 150 ABs over the course of the season, even with Dusty at the helm. Acceptable, but I do prefer E. Perez.

Why not Greenberg over Grissom? I doubt Grissom gives us anything at the age of 39.

I guarantee Dusty will use Grissom vs. any righty against whom he has good career numbers. Dusty loves those stupid matchup numbers, and Grissom has been around since the dawn of time, so he has plenty of history vs. NL pitchers.

I just remember when we gave Dusty Baker the manager's job and I thought, "Nothing wrong with that." Then, I endured three years of pure hell and I discovered what was wrong with it.
