Jeromy Burnitz - OF - Cubs

The Orioles are close to signing Jeromy Burnitz to a two-year deal worth $6 million per season, according to the Baltimore Sun.

What a remarkably bad idea. Maybe the worst of the winter so far, which is really saying something. Burnitz has had OPSs of 676, 786, 915 and 757 the last four years. His one good year was Coors Field aided, of course, and he had a road OPS of 775 that year. Burnitz turns 37 in April, so he's going to get worse, not better. As a one-year stopgap, he'd be tolerable. $12 million over two years is just flushing Peter Angelos' money down the toilet. Dec. 27 - 10:56 pm et

Oh wow when I first read that I assumed it was 2 years 6 mill total which would be decent at least. 6 per year is insane.

Maybe next year they'll take Jones- one crappy ex-Cub RF after another, and another...

The only problem is that we will get Burnitz in return.

Wow maybe next year we can trade them Jacque Jones.

So this is why Tejada wants to leave....crappy RF signings.

Then why would he want to come here?

This is a really good point that should be expanded on. Why would Tejada want to come here? We don't have a winning tradition. We haven't made the playoffs since 2003. Teams don't become better when they trade 1 player for another of equal value when it just creates another hole somewhere else.

If Tejada wants to win, I'm afraid he'd be going to the wrong organization if he became a Cub. He should want to be traded to the team that has Mark Prior. A combination of Tejada and Prior with a decent supporting cast will probably create a winner.

How long will it take for Tejada to wear out his welcome? How long before he asks for another trade?

The Cubs treat their Dominican superstars so well throughout their time with the team. Or maybe he just likes that the Cubs never dangle the names of their superstars out for trade proposals.

I'll probably get flamed at forn oting this, but when Sammy started to heat up in the mid-90s (particularly in 96' and 97'), I asked my Old Man (a long time Cubs fan) why he thought that the team didn't market him the way they did Grace. He answered that race and skin color was a major reason. Of course, this changed the next year (98'), but did the Cubs have a choice at that point? Is this still true? Lee certainly gets more pub that ARam, whose stats might have been similar had he not been hurt.

May be this needs its own thread. :offtopic:

A Ram is a reserved person who is held back because of his lack of command of the English language. He is an intelligent person who is shy around others for a lack of a better term. Couple these two factors together and you dont get an ideal marketing posterchild.

Lee on the other hand is a native born english speaker and like his father an outgoing fellow from what I hear. Those two factors make for a player you run out as the face of the organisation.

Remember that English is a difficult language to master. With all the local dialects and slang we often arent sure how to use it correctly. Besides playing baseball everyday you expect latin (foreign) players to learn a language that we teach for 12 years in our schools to various levels.

So do we get the Orioles' first round draft pick if they sign Burnitz? I know he's a type A free agent, but the whole system is hard to figure out for me.

No. The Cubs had to offer arbitration to Burnitz and since they didn't they give up the right to a draft pick.

I'm pretty sure we don't because we didn't offer Burnitz arbitration.

In addition, A-Ram's season was nowhere close to Lee's.

The day ARam got hurt he led the team in HR's and RBI. After having a awful April. That's probably what he's referring to.

Wow. 36 year old corner outfielder puts up a .757 OPS and gets a RAISE, and a multiyear contract to boot. Who the hell are the O's bidding against? I'd like to think the O's are overpaying, because if this offer is actually necessary to secure Burnitz's services then this FA market is completely irrational.

burnitz getting $5/$6M per for years from the orioles makes me want to piss my pants laughing. and cubs fans thought we overpaid for jacque jones. at least jones still has time to spike up for a year or three, burnitz is clearly in the autumn of his career and only hit .258 last year while being protected for much of the year by aramis ramirez. his agent should immediately be nominated for agent of the year!
