On the plus side, if properly used in a platoon, JJ can produce significantly better than his overall numbers suggest. Here are his career OPS vs righties:

1999:814

2000:817

2001:794

2002:952

2003:834

2004:775

2005:814

We currently don't have anyone for him to platoon with, but there are plenty of 4th OF righties out there who can mash lefties that we could pick up. That platoon would improve our production in RF by about 50 OPS, which is still nowhere near enough. Accepting the rockies offer of Bigbie for Welly and platooning him would have been a much better option.

Bring back Sosa to platoon w/ Jones. ;)

Sosa's 2005 vs lefties - .288 .370 .471

2004 - .253 .393 .442

2002-2004 - .293 .402 .497 (probably irrelevent since he's fallen off the cliff).

Jones at $5m and Sosa at $1m could give you 825-875 OPS at relatively fair cost. But of course, that couldn't happen given the messy divorce and baggage.

There are good options out there...craig monroe, Xavier Nady, Ro White if he cant find a starting job, etc.

Maybe Jones can put a Sammy mask on and play right the whole time.

Of course, Baker would probably start the vet over Jones. ;)

Ro White there's a name from the past. I wish Randall Simon batted right handed and played right. That guy was awesome!

Nady isn't available, is he? I'm assuming he's New York's RFer whether they trade for Manny or not.

Nady can rake. I'd like to see what he could do outside of Petco.

can we atleast inject jacque jones with steroids? maybe we can get a .275/.340 statline from him that way. he might develop multiple cancers but atleast we'll get the extra victory and finish with 86 wins instead of 85. that way we'll only miss the playoffs by 6 games instead of 7.

You know, maybe i'm just overtired, but I cannot understand how Hendry and the Cubs could sign a homeless guy off the street to play RF and people will say "you never know how it will work out".

That's junk. At least Lee had the peripherals showing some sort of statistical bounce when he left Pro Player and came to Wrigley. Jones is bloody awful. Just terrible. Look at any metric you want. His BA sucks, his OBP super sucks, he K's too much, he's barely a 20 HR a year guy, he doesn't steal, his defense is inferior to Patterson's, and he doesn't deserve more than 1 year deal for about $4.5 m. AND to top it off, we're putting him with a coaching staff that will do nothing to get him to be more patient.

So yeah, I don't need to "wait and see" how this turns out. I knew how Burnitz turned out, and this is going to be worse than that, for a couple extra years. Hooray.

Well said. This echoes my feeling with respect to a Jones more or less exactly.

A 3 #$@#!%$#$@%$#*@%#$@ year deal? ARe you kidding me?

Ok Fire Hendry. Fire baker. I've absolutely had it. How god damn stupid is Hendry? I defended him ALL off season, and I can't defend him ANY more.

ESPN 1000 just said it's a 3-year deal worth $16 million. I'm seriously thinking about switching favorite teams.

Three years. That's damned irresponsible. Just because he's the best option standing in your mind, Jim, doesn't mean you give him 3 YEARS!!

Idiotic. Absolutely idiotic. Even if they do bring in Tejada, on it's on it's still idiotic. We're stuck with Jones for 3 years. We just married a terrible baseball player for 3 years.

OMG, I'm eating crow on this as I said I didn't think he would sign today. The radio report said he's pending a physical. OMG!

A 3 GOSH DAMN YEAR DEAL ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS? I HATE THE CUBS I HATE HENDRY.

Does he even know what OBP means?

Is anyone going to the Convention? Can we get some tough questions asked.

What a $!@%#$% idiot.

I really wish this wasn't a family board.

Honestly, the thinking behind this one is going to be hilarious. I cannot, cannot wait until Hendry trots out some stupid reason for signing him.

And even if you feel he's the best, fine. Give him 1 year with an option. Don't guarantee 3 years!! :x
