thoughts?

Industry sources told the Arizona Republic that Kenny Lofton has agreed in principle to a deal with the Dodgers.

But he never played for the Red Sox. Lofton will probably be the Dodgers' center fielder against right-handers, pushing J.D. Drew back to right field. As things stand now, Jason Repko and later a healthy Jayson Werth would platoon with him. However, a Reggie Sanders signing could make Jose Cruz Jr. the center fielder against left-handers. Lofton's signing also figures to push Bill Mueller down to the sixth or seventh spot in the order

Maybe we'll see Corey traded soon now that some teams are out of the Lofton sweepstakes (Arizona comes to mind).

With Nomar, Bill Mueller, Derek Lowe, Grady Little, etc, many were saying that the Dodgers are importing all the former Red Sox they can.

does this open the door for a drew trade?

I doubt the lofton signing has much effect on where drew goes. I'm no expert obviously, but I think if they want to trade Drew they are/were going to do it reguardless of lofton.

I doubt it, looks like they are stockpiling talent and don't care about surplusage. Gluttony at its finest.

I wanted Lofton right next to Giles in the outfield. He makes for an awesome 4th or 5th outfielder if nothing else. A guy who can lead off if your only lead off hitter gets hurt. He can hit for a very decent AVG. He's patient and draws plenty of walks. He can steal bases. He can play any outfield spot. A horrible arm, but what do you want for under 2m?

I wish him well.

I don't think the Lofton signing indicates too much, but if they also sign Sanders, they will have a huge surplus of outfielders.

I'd see if maybe they'd be interested in trading Cruz. While not a great option, Curz would be better than anything we have currently slated for rightfield.

I'm 41 years old and fat and I'm better than anything we currently have slated for right field :)

Me too. I think that Hendry is going to get a decent OF off the Non-tender list.

I had the Dodgers listed as the division winner for 2006 prior to the Mueller, Nomar and Lofton signings.

They might have done a really foolish thing with giving Furcal ridiculous money, but apparently they put together a plan of action and went for the jugular. Not only do they have serious depth (especially if Sanders signs as well), but they have insurance at every position on the team. Nomar can play 1st, SS or 3rd or corner outfield. Mueller can play 2nd or 3rd. Furcal can play SS or 2nd. Kent can play 1b or 2b. Izturis can play 2b or SS. Cruz, Drew and Lofton can all play anywhere in the outfield.

And they still have many complimentary parts beyond those guys. Repko, Robles, Werth, Choi.... And then they have the kids. Guzman, Navarro, Young and Loney, the kid they got from Oakland for Bradley, etc....

I won't even bring up the pitching prospects. Sorry San Diego. LA crushes you like a bug this coming year.

I know Colletti is new at this "GM" stuff, but he does know that there is a 25 man roster limit, right?

HAHA! Good one. I don't know. Don't they have Olmedo Saenz too?

By my count, they have:

C: Navarro/Phillips/Alomar

INF: Furcal, Kent, Saenz, Izturis, Choi, Mueller, Nomar

OF: Drew, Jose Cruz, Jayson Werth, Ricky Ledee, Jason Repko, Lofton

And they're rumored to be close to signing Reggie Sanders.

That's 17 guys.

Phillips is either already gone or will be gone via non-tender. Choi will likely be non-tendered as well.

Could they be gearing up for a blockbuster deal with Boston for Manny?

Izturis will be on the DL til mid-season and Choi might be non-tendered. Looks like they'll have to choose between 3 catchers and 7 OFers to have 11 pitchers.

That might just be the plan. Or....the Dodgers are going to field 2 teams.

According to the paper, after the Nomar signing, LA had 14 guys under contract for $74 million. Looks like McCourt's going to spend a little more than expected.
