Quick question - is there an authority on what players are out there from Japan that could possibly fill our RF opening and possibly be in the middle infield mix? They tend to be more consistently solid fundamentally and may provide a better alternative than some of the options we've been hearing about. Also, did I miss where Ichiro is definitively no longer a possible trade option?

No, I don't think anyone here really cares about Japanese players.

You are talking about the Cubs and not people on this site...right?

The site, it was a (bad) joke.

That was suppose to be a joke? Time for you to go back to Ohio. :D

To answer the question of the thread, I'm pretty sure there isn't anyone coming over that will fit our needs. Has that SP with the gyroball signed yet?

Nobody this offseason most likely.

1908 - thanks for the reply. I knew I had scanned that thread before.

Next quick question - just how does one of these guys get "posted", what is the process?? Fukudome and Iwamura (despite the Ks) sound like just the kind of players I'd like to see us target.

And again, has anyone heard conclusively that Ichiro is off the potential market for certain?

Something I wrote a couple years ago:

A Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) team decides to post one of their players under contract to the Majors. The team notifies the Commissioner's Office in the US, which notifies all MLB franchises. Any/all interested teams make a blind offer. For example, the Red Sox, Cubs and Giants (among others) bid for Iguchi; the Red Sox have no idea what the Cubs and Giants bid; the Cubs have no idea what the Red Sox and Giants bid, etc. So the Cubs could bid $6 million and that figure might or might not be enough to obtain his rights. After collecting the bids, the Commissioner's Office reveals the amount of the high bid (but not who made it) to the NPB team, and they are free to accept or reject it. If the bid is accepted, the winner is free to work out a deal with the player. The posting fee is due only if said player signs with said MLB team. If a deal can't be worked out, his original team retains his rights.

He wasn't ever on the market in my opinion.

So that bid money goes to the NPB team and not to the player?

Correct.
