So basically the Government has decreed that the Cubs must suffer in a bad, mutated, re-bricked ballpark with smelly bathrooms.

The level of hyperbole in this thread is ridiculous.

On the contrary, I don't think there's been enough hyperbole about the sheer dank awfulness of the bleacher bathrooms. :newugh:

Although the priceless look that newcomers (especially opposing fans) get on their faces when told that the bathrooms are down on the first level near the entrance almost makes it worthwhile. :insane:

I'm not getting the gnashing of teeth on the refurb. I think it's cool and much needed--both in terms of physical improvement and capacity. The place will look great and there's no way the permit would have been issued if the final product will be substantially different from the 2005 "original." It's just that the location is such that everyone gets a good luck at the inner workings of the construction process. I guess I'm just one of the few who would still root for the Cubs even if they did a complete move of the team into a replica of the Philadelphia Vet in Rockford.

I believe ADA regs will ensure that the bathrooms will be brought into the new century.

Did you see the stacks of broken chamberpots photographed early on in the project? The old bathrooms are no more.

I'm all for the remodel as well. It's not as if Wrigley has remained unchanged for years or is in perfect shape. Let's face it, the place needs a bit of a facelift. The extra seats will bring extra revenue, and if we are lucky new bathrooms in that part of the park.

I have little doubt that it will look very good when done, and congrous with the traditional look of Wrigley. I'm actually looking forward to seeing the changes.

Truthfully, I think an entirely new park wouldn't be a bad idea, but I can't imagine it being anyplace other than Wrigleyville. Since Wrigley is a landmark now, that isn't going to happen.

actually, your right. anytime a remodel is done to a pre-ADA structure, attempts have to be made to improve the situation. some cities, that means adding a toilet. in others (and I guess Chicago here), it could mean an entire bathroom remodel. Its really up to the building inspector, and I wouldnt be surprised at all considering who the mayor is..

and I'll go on to say I like Daly alot for what he has done for the building community in Chicago, but his dark side can rot in hell..(the Sox fan he is)

I have been looking forward to the "bleacher expansion" since they announced it years ago. I thought that the addition of beloved seats would make the supply go up, and hopefully bring the price down (on the street that is).

What I am extremely dissapointed in, is the Cubs way of handling it. If you notice, the Cubs have slowly been transforming Wrigley into a different ballpark. The changes are one at a time, one year at a time.

It started when they decided to put the SEARS logo all over the dugout, followed by the Southwest Airlines logo on the facade of the bleachers. The season after that, the Cubs put up a new message board under the center-field scoreboard with McDonald's logo flashing at us all game. Then, they put up message boards in the upperdeck on the facades, as well as hanging from the underside of the roof facing the playing field.

Oh, must I forget the addition of the dugout boxes, followed by the bullpen boxes.

Now don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that there are no benefits to these additions, but it is obvious to me that the Cubs know that introducing all of them at the same time would have led to public outcry!

Now, the Cubs are "expanding the bleachers", but are so ashamed of the project that they won't answer any questions to reporters, and won't release any statements. THEY TORE DOWN THE BLEACHERS AND ARE REBUILDING THEM!!! The Cubs brass new damn well that the fans never would have gone for this if they had just come out and say it. So what do they do - they LIE ABOUT THE WHOLE THING!!!

As far as I'm concerned, idiot fans can spend $45 (after ticketmaster fee) to sit in the bleachers with a bunch of 20 something yuppies who don't know sh-t about baseball. The bleacher craze has gone way too far and what made the seats special was day baseball with the common fan. Now it is weekday night baseball with yuppies who are at the game looking to get drunk and get lucky.

Maybe I'm crazy, but when they said they were expanding the bleachers I didn't expet them to just add a new structure to the previous one. I'm sure beause of building codes they had to ust completely gut it in order to meet new standards. Its not like they are changing the inside walls(except for that hole thing) and it doesn't appear like they are doing something radical on the outside. It is still Wrigley. Now at some point, it won't be Wrigley(say they completely gut and redo the upper deck), but it not at that point yet. And even if they want to take Wrigley away, so be it. I love it and all, but it will have to come down someday, and when that happens it won't take anything away from what was. And bottom line is, I'm a Cub's fan first. Wrigley is just a nice compliment.

My memory may be deceiving me, but I'm almost positive a new wall for the outside of the bleachers was included in the plans released at the convention. The search function is down, but burnt may still have his pics of the diagram. That's something that may not have been highlighted in most articles, but that information has been out there.

And there will be new bathrooms and concessions:

Cubs.com"]The 10 rows of juniper bushes that were in center field as a hitter's backdrop have been removed. In 2006, there will be four rows of bushes and above that, a new lounge, which will be behind dark glass so as not to bother the batters. There will be wheelchair seating in the bleachers as well as new bathrooms and concession stands. The Cubs also are considering a new sound system.

Glad to hear about the new bathrooms. Everyone knows that's been necessary for awhile.

On the hyperbole. I do like to use it to make my point. I'm not shy about admitting it. However, the statement in question was really just supposed to be funny---I also like to elicit a few laughs if I can. Sorry for the confusion.

Obviously I'm not going to abandon Wrigley field because they tore down the bleachers and rebuilt them. I'm sort of with SEC 511: they should just admit they're doing a piece-by-piece full refurb on the place. The Trib doesn't think the fans can stand it. I think they can----and they'll appreciate it more in the long run if they know up front what the WHOLE plan is instead of finding out little by little that the Tribune company has been hiding from them.

Ultimately though, it's either going to be a brand new ballpark that looks like Wrigley, or else an old, rusty place clad in shiny new armor. I think I'd prefer the former. "Real" new is better than "fake" new.

Anyone shocked by the invasive nature of this project simply hasn't been paying attention for the last five years.

Interesting note from the Muskat.

The right field corner area will be reserved seating, while the rest of the bleachers will remain general admission.

I was actually joking a bit about the bathrooms, too. :D

The Cubs obviously had to institute some crowd control measures to contain the throngs of ardent Jacques Jones fans in the RF bleachers. :)

I wonder who will get those seats.

Al Yellon says the CF restaurant may not wind up as originally envisioned.

Al Yellon"]Finally, I have one bit of news gleaned about the bleacher construction project. Many of you have asked about the CF restaurant, and what progress has been made there. The answer from me, based on the photos, has always been "none". And there's a reason for that. Apparently, as this project proceeds, it is becoming clearer to both the construction folks, and management, that this restaurant may not fly as scheduled. Meetings are going on, and Opening Day MAY come without any such restaurant completed. That's the word I hear from my sources, anyway.

They're gonna plant ivy on the exterior? Why?

Souvenir.

It'll get shredded by fans, I bet.

Plus, I know I'll be peeing in it on my way home from Murphy's on random nights.

I walked home from Murphy's a couple of months ago and was going down Waveland at about 1:30 AM when I noticed a man waddling toward me. It was dark, so all I could see was his silhouette at first, but he was definitely moving strangely. I figured he was just drunk. When I got closer, I noted that not only was he drunk, but he was walking so strangely because he was peeing on the Waveland Ave. sidewalk as he walked and was trying, fairly unsuccessfully, not to step in it as he went. I stood off to the side and let him pass. I don't think he ever noticed me.

Also, the more that I think about it, I probably saw him do this for at least half a minute. At no point during this time did the stream of urine falter.
