Found this at the bottome of the article...

The Braves will now look for a backup at first. Nomar Garciaparra, whose agents met with the Braves Wednesday afternoon, is an option. Two other right-handed hitting first basemen to keep in mind are former Marlin Jeff Conine and former White Sox’ star Frank Thomas.

Who does Boston have playing SS? Am I missing someone obvious? They still have that Ramirez kid in the minors, right?

Traded him to Florida for Beckett and Lowell.

Sign Nomar? Wouldn't that be an interesting turn of events.

Hanley Ramirez went to Florida in the Beckett trade.

I think this puts us in competition with Boston for Lugo possibly. :(

Do the Red Sox go hard after Lugo now? Do they just plug someone in to SS for the season? I don't really understand this trade from either side, although Marte was seemingly blocked by Chipper with his new contract. But still.

Boston's best position prospect is a kid named Dustin Pedroia. Pedroia had been playing 2B in the minors because the organization had Renteria and Hanley Ramirez ahead of him, but when he was drafted out of Arizona State, he was a shortstop. And not only was he a shortstop, but he was voted the best defensive player in college baseball his junior year. Maybe they'll switch him back there?

I suppose they could start the season with Alex Cora there, as well. Maybe make a move for someone like Jack Wilson... either way, the best news for the Red Sox is that they can move on from Renteria.

I think Lugo to Boston has a chance. My guess is Manny to Anaheim for a package involving Cabrera. The Angels have nothing to lose by trading Cabrera. They have the best IF prospects on earth.

Has Schuerholz lost his mind?

How much cash is Boston picking up in this? Marte? I thought they were really high on this kid. :?

Chipper Freaking Jones. Oh well, at least Marte won't be our problem from now on...to the AL he goes.

From this morning's Boston Globe:

The Sox could cut separate deals with Atlanta and Tampa Bay, sending Renteria to the Braves for Marte, then using Marte as part of a bigger deal with Tampa Bay in which they would not only acquire the shortstop they have targeted, Julio Lugo, but also first baseman Aubrey Huff and/or closer Danys Baez. The Sox have shown interest in Huff in the past and that may be renewed after they failed to acquire Milwaukee first baseman Lyle Overbay. To make a bigger deal, the Sox would probably have to offer a package including Marte, catcher Kelly Shoppach, and pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

I would guess the Red Sox want Lugo. They traded Hanley Ramirez and Renteria, so they need somebody. I can see the Sox willingly overpaying for Lugo, which won't make Hendry happy.

I guess the Braves don't have high hopes for Betemit. Wonder how much money the Red Sox are sending. Still, stupid deal for the Braves IMO.

I'm trying to find the article, but I read somewhere last week that he went from being BA's #1 overall prospect to being #4 in the Braves system within a few months.

I've said it for ages, but Renteria and Lugo are essentially the same player.

So if the Red Sox don't pick up any money, and then send Marte to the Devil Rays as part of a package to net Lugo and Huff, then they're basically adding Huff while riding themselves of an awful contract, and they're not taking a hit production-wise at shortstop at all.

What would Tampa want for both Lugo and Huff, though? That could cost a bundle. All the good prospects will be in Florida, somewhere.

I don't think it was because Marte had slipped, but rather the Braves traded for good prospects (Davies) and another (Francouer) made such strides?
