Thoughts on the Pierre deal?

I like the move. We give up a guy who is never going to amount to much (Mitre) and 2 guys that may or may not amount to anything (Pinto/Nolasco) for a real leadoff hitter. I realize that Walker would be competent as a leadoff hitter, but since neither Jim nor Dusty seems to know that, we might as well get a decent guy at the top. A top two of Pierre and Walker would be exponentially better than what we had last year.

It's a good move in the fact that it does something for the club now as opposed to what someone "might" bring to the club later. The price a bit steep for my liking which brings me to - meh. It's better that the move is done than not.

 

It's just that when JH says that the Marlins know the Cubs system better than he does, jokingly or not, and we have the history of Willis...well, it scares me some.

If we could have gotten, say, bradley and floyd i'd think it was bad. If you can't get good OF's, then it looks a lot better.

Mitre didn't have much of a chance, Pinto and Nolasco may have never had a shot, and our leadoff situation was disgustingly awful in '05. I'm not pulling a Murph and saying Pierre is the best leadoff hitter in the history of the team, but it sure beats what we had.

I don't see Pierre as much of an upgrade over Hairston. If trading those guys helps prepare for the Rule 5 draft then maybe it is okay.

I'm really not worked up one way or another about this deal. Of course, if Hendry actually does sign him long-term, then I'll be pissed.

I put didn't like it, but it's a pretty mild distaste. I like both Nolasco and Pinto, and thought we overpaid, especially considering there were better options that likely could have been had for less. But all in all, it is a significant upgrade, and it does address a fairly big need. So - eh. I guess. I would mind it less if I knew Hendry had exhausted the other possibilities first.
