Dibble saying what a great OF he is.

Hendry: "There is nothing about him that is a deficiency. He can help the younger guys. Five or six clubs were after Pierre."

What do you expect him to say?

"The first major acquisition for my team this year sucks. Juan Pierre is an unreformable piece of garbage."

missed part of it:

I think he said "Cubs are going to add another bench player (Mabry?)"

Talking up Patterson (so why'd you get Pierre?).

Dibble suggests playing corey in RF or IF. Hendry doesn't rule it out (this was a leading question so I don't put much stock in that). Haven't heard anything about RF.

Not interested in closers. Jokes about market for relievers. Goes through farm a couple times a year but mostly relies on Fleita and Hughes.

I'm just reporting.

Is that meant to be LF, or did Ron Dibble actually suggest Corey be moved to an infield position?

I have one question. Who the heck gives a crap about a leadoff hitter's power? A leadoff hitter is supposed to get on base for the guys with power. Pierre having almost no power is not a valid complaint.

But to say he is deficient in no aspect of the game is a lie. His power is deficient, plain and simple. Not saying that it's a bad thing necessarily, but it's something he's deficient at.

Or maybe he's deficient at stealing bases. There's one.

if he had power, he'd be a better hitter.

I know, but please give me a list of all the leadoff hitters with good power. (20+ HRs)

Power isn't just about HR's. Pierre's SLG is hideous. Numerous (about every friggin' one) CF's have a better SLG %.

Homers aren't the best way to judge power. Slugging pct. There's a winner. The best leadoff hitter in the AL last year was Brian Roberts, who put up a 515 slg pct. Damon was at 439. Jeter was at 450. Ichiro was at 439. Sizemore was at 484.

Pierre was at 354.

I wish people demanded the same things of their elected officials that they demand of their favorite sports teams' general managers.

this place is a constant mad dash to be the first one to bash Hendry.

I've lost most of my own faith in him, but to pick apart every word he utters in an inane conversation with Rob Dibble is pretty weak.

If US presidents lost wars as frequently as Cubs GM lose games, I'd be pretty upset. But by and large, US politicians have been far more successful running this country, its states and cities than any Cubs GM I've ever met.

I recorded the interview in my MyFi. I'm not sure how to transfer it to a computer though.

I'll re-listen to it tonight and relay any highlights that I've forgotten.

From memory, he spent a lot of time praising Pierre.

1. Said two weeks ago they thought they could get Pierre for two of those guys. It became evident that the third guy was necessary to get the deal done.

2. Marlins had done an excellent job scouting the Cubs system. Had the Cubs players rated about the same as the Cubs own personell had them rated.

3. Felt the Marlins were going to do something with Pierre by the end of the night. Didn't know if adding the third guy would do the trick, but felt like he had to do it. (My guess is this is why there was some discrepancy about the players in the deal.)

4. When asked if the Cubs were done, he said they were going to try to add a rightfielder and some players to the bench. Did not mention a starting pitcher.

5. Seemed really uncomfortable when asked about Patterson. He said that Patterson was a tough one for him because he liked him and that Patterson had so much ability and had always did what the organization had asked him to do. He said that he felt the Cubs could not pass on Pierre but it didn't mean that Patterson was gone. He said that "as of right now he's part of the ballclub and we expect him to help us."

I'm sure there was more there, I'll re-listen to it and post some highlights. If someone knows how to transfer it off a MyFi, I could let somebody host it.

I don't ever recall a GM in any sport losing a game. I've never even seen any of them in uniform for that matter.

not the place for this but...so elected officials can keep lieing and misleading and saying things that fly in the face of facts, as long as they win wars, cuz everyone knows governments only job it to win wars. I think our energy would be better spent demanding straight talk from our elected officials instead of our team's GMs. call me crazy.

and with all these Cubs GMs you've met, you should get them to NSBB for guest chats.

Bush better than Hendry. It takes a lot to offend me, but this does it.

why would you go to a cubs message board to criticize politicians? On a baseball message board, I expect to talk about baseball. Evaluating my favorite team's GM is part of that.

I hope they keep Cpatt and put him in RF or LF....I would like to see him develop in the 6th or 7th spot in the order......I think corey still could hit 30hrs this year I would like to see him do it with the Cubs....If he fails bring up Pie.....

Agreed. I have a vision of Patterson becoming great somewhere else.

What if Pie fails? I'd rather get someone to play RF, have a backup, and Pie as an emergency.

Pie should only start this year if he absolutely has to.

Pie is having a miserable season in Winter Ball. I don't think he will be ready anytime soon.
