I think the funny part is that a professional web site would refer to baseball players as "studs".

That's what I was referring to.

Maybe since every other team backed out on Florida Jim was able to get another Murton... not likely but there is a chance.

Jim's pretty good with scooping up good prospects from other teams...I'll bet whoever it is, has a decent shot at one day playing big league ball at a high level.

The Cubs are offering two Double-A pitching studs -- Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto -- for Pierre and a Marlins Double-A pitching prospect.

From the Marlins site. I thought that was pretty funny. :D

Whats so funny? BA ranked them 17th and 18th best prospects respectively in the southern league, which was loaded this year. Pinto and Nolasco just happened to be #2 and #3 in the league in ERA (2.71 and 2.89), both averaging a K/IP, and 1.22 WHIPs. And although they are both repeating after failed attempts in AAA, they are both age appropriate. So please explain to me whats funny.

This is what I was referring to. A professional web site using "studs" is a little off. "Highly rated prospects" is one thing, but I still think it is funny that a professional website is talking about "studs" in the minor leagues. Of course, they have to keep their few fans' interest somehow I guess.

Just in case you missed, he wasn't implying they aren't studs, just thought (as did I) that it was funny that a professional web site would refer to players as studs.

I could've sworn that the term "young studs" was pretty normal in baseball journalism.

In opinion columns, but not on official "corporate" web sites.

Ok, this is way too off-topic. Back to the topic at hand - does NSBB officially endorse this deal or not? :P

Is it worth giving up three prospects for a one-year rental?

I don't know....did it work for the Diamonback with Richie Sexson, or the White Sox with Wells and Colon (in separate deals)? My guess is...it wouldn't be worth 3 prospects, but if the rumor is the Cubs are only sending Nolasco and Pinto and getting a prospect with Pierre, then yeah, it will be worth it. Knowing Hendry's ability to work a trade...it wouldn't surprise me if he walks away with either Kensing, Vargas, or Olsen with Pierre.

ESPN is reporting that it's pretty much agreed upon, and that it's for Mitre, Nolasco, and Pinto, with only Pierre coming back our way. That said, it looks like that's based on something Jason Stark said earlier today; so I guess it could have changed:

I'm buying the official Cubs.com article over an ESPN.com article. The Cubs.com version sounds better anyway. :D

NSAvenger, if Hendry somehow comes out of this with Vargas, I will remove my I Hate Jim Hendry BandWGN and vow that it will never return.

I will take Scott Olsen as the unnamed pitching prospect.

I've found quite a few interesting pitchers in their minors, Chris Resop would be another. Anyone have a list of their top 20?

I'm not sure Vargas would still qualify as a a "minor leaguer" considering he started 13 games in the majors.

If Kensing, Olsen, Resop, or Bazardo are included then its a good deal, othwise its way overpaying. And in my opinion with Pierre, the only way we can contend is with an addition to the starting rotation (or just replacing Rusch with Williams), everyone staying healthy, and a stud in RF. In other words, I'm hoping the Marlins stall to get something more and we chose Bradley instead. Its just so interesting that the story about Dusty meeting with him over lunch last week comes out today. Please let it be a sign!

Whats the marlin's plans? Why in God's name did they rush so many pitchers to the majors last year? Are they trying to be the anti-drays? Was there a SARS outbreak in Albequerque? I mean 3 21 year old pitchers (Bazardo, olsen, and Johnson) 2 22 year olds (Olsen and Resop) and a 23 year old (Kensing's second option, Im not counting Dtrain or Messenger who at least elevated steadily and started 2005 as an isotope). Did they want to win some contest for burning the most amount of valuable options?

I was hoping they would need to send us a guy from their 40 man, but they are at 34 right now + 1 or 2 from us depending on what the trade turns out to be.

Nobody thought Hendry would be able to pull Murton from the Red Sox, also. So it wouldn't surprise me if Kensing, Vargas, or Olsen is coming along with Pierre. Which would be fine with me.

That part of the deal will end up being a big key, imo. If the Cubs get some one talented who has logged a decent amount of time in the majors or some one who has a good ceiling and is close to being ready to go regularly in the majors from the Marlins, then they will have an important trading chip that would help them acquire some one like Bobby Abreu or Adam Dunn.

A package involving Josh Johnson, Jerome Williams, Roberto Novoa, and Scott Moore would like quite tempting to the Phillies for Abreu, no?
