But lost in the public disappointment of missing on Furcal is a little secret about the Tribsters: They probably aren't too sad about saving the money. This isn't the first time they've finished back in the pack when bidding for an elite player, and each time, they tend to repel and settle for lesser parts. That explains the interest in Bradley and Kevin Mench, a fairly productive outfielder. You'd think the Cubs, lost in the Sox glow, would keep trying to make a major splash. And maybe Hendry will land Alfonso Soriano, who will hit his 30 homers, drive in his 90 runs and commit his 20 errors at second base before hitting free agency next winter.

Don't be surprised, though, if the Cubs are a hodgepodge wrapped around the hope of Lee, Aramis Ramirez and pitching. Don't be surprised if Ronny Cedeno is your shortstop and Matt Murton is your left fielder. Don't be surprised if Juan Pierre, another leadoff man on the Hendry wish list, ends up elsewhere. Don't be surprised if the Kerry Wood trade talk is nothing but nonsense. And don't be surprised when the Cubs win 85 games.

But, hey, at least the profit margin will be higher. That's the important thing, you know.

Just a note, and it may not be my place to say anything, but I don't think posting whole articles is allowed. I had one removed in the past for doing the same thing.

EDIT: Perhaps you changed that while I was typing. Or I am going crazy, which is quite possible as well.

Oh, I know - I accidently copied it all. Fixed. Thanks for trying to save me from the gallows though.

Would that be that bad?

What a shock that Jay Mariotti rips the Cubs.

He's become much more outspoken on it lately, though. It started after we traded Lawton. The Cubs management obviously read these articles, how do you think this makes Hendry feel?

and if the cubs go on to have a good year & win the division or wild card with cedeno & murton, this guy will be on the cubs bandwagon. these writers have very short memories when it comes to their predictions and no accountability. i guarentee that the man knows nothing about cedeno or murton but he blows on the cubs for planning on starting them. what a major hack this loser is.

I don't think ripping Hendry over Furcal is justified. The Dodgers came in with a late, huge offer that the other teams weren't allowed to really counter. Schuerholz is P.O.ed b/c he didn't get to improve his offer. Raffy wanted the money and I'm glad we weren't the ones giving it to him. Mariotti is a fool if he thinks Furcal, a leadoff hitter with crappy production, is worth that much money. Either way Hendry is excused, and I, obviously, am no Hendry supporter.

As usual Mariotti twists the facts into a rant about the Trib. Co. I don't love the Trib., but they're not the devil incarnate.

this is what happens when they hire guys to sell papers instead of give unbiased opinions & intelligently discuss baseball.

I like Mariotti on Around the Horn and while this article may not be entirely correct factually, the sentiment is good. Maybe the Cubs aren't "staying out of the big free agents" or whatnot, but at least Jay is giving them a kick in the pants.

Although dissing the Cubs by saying Murton and Cedeno will start in left and at short is not the way to go. At this point, I'll gladly take that because it means Neifi is not the SS.

That article is well-written and is pretty accurate. The Cubs havent done a damn thing.

other than strengthen their bullpen quite a bit with howry & eyre? besides, the season doesnt start in January. look at the authors track record when it comes to baseball commentary and i dont think the term "accurate" will come to mind. if the cubs would have out bid the dodgers he would have blasted them for paying 13 mil a year for a .280 hitting shortstop. imo he should be delivering newspapers not writting articles in them.

This is why I hate the media. There are so many legitamate reasons to rip the Cubs, and instead Mariotti goes back to the false Trib is cheap, they don't care about winning argument.

Mariotti has been writing this same column for years now. I remember him writing the same thing when Andy MacPhail lost out on the Mike Hampton bidding back in the 2000-01 offseason.

I'm still pissed we didn't land Hampton.

I bet tomorrow's Mariotti article is about how Kerry Wood has never won more than 14 games, Mark Prior is as fragile as a poorly made vase, Z has a bad temper, Milton Bradley's going to Prison, Cubdom is in disarray, and the Blizzard of Oz is making Captain Toothpick look like a fool.

How did the Trib fire Bayless, and yet the SunTimes keep the equal enept Janie Mariotta on the payroll, shows you why the SunTimes is considered a second rate paper.

I swear (not cussin, mind you) that if Mariotta isn't ripping the Cubs, either through tv or thru his article, he would be one unhappy, and lon....what a minute...he is already one unhappy, and lonely dude.

Jay really does need to take a course of "creative writing" cause there isn't anything creative about what he writes. Same verse, different day.
