I just hope Hendry doesn't start to panic and convince himself we need to make a big splash regardless of the cost. Like was said above, if we can swing a deal for a CF (Wilkerson would be good, seems like its been talked about that Bowden might like our "toolsy" CPat) and a big bat for RF we can then throw some of that crazy Furcal money at an innings-eater and call it a day. This is a huge year for Jim and Dusty, and if they get it stuck in their head we have to make a splash for Pierre or Damon, etc. regardless of the cost, we are going to be in a heap o' trouble.

Per WSCR update guy Ofman:

The Reds offered Kearns for Mitre and Nolasco.

Why the hell is this not an official deal then?

Maybe Hendry's pen ran out of ink, and he had to go and get another?

Florida must have it in for Hendry. They give up all their other players for garbage, then they demand the world for Pierre? I don't blame them, but gimme a break..Hendry would be a fool to trade Pie for Pierre.

I wouldn't say they got garbage for the other players. They recevied some very good prospects.

The Marlins right now hold all the cards when it comes to Pierre:

1. They've moved so many other players that they've probably cleared enough payroll. I'm sure they'd still prefer to move Pierre, but with Delgado, LoDuca, Lowell, and Beckett off the books, they may choose to keep Pierre if they don't feel they will get enough in return for him.

2. There are a few teams looking for CF help, which can only help drive up the cost in terms of what players will go the Marlins in a trade.

Get Wilkerson instead.

All of that is true, but. . .

There is absolutely no reason for the Marlins to keep Pierre. He is of no use to them next year, other than buying the beer for the under 21 players.

My first boss taught me that the key to any negotiation was being willing to walk away without a deal. Call their bluff Jim, I guarantee that even if they can't get someone to overpay, Pierre will not be on their roster in 2006. Let someone else give up the farm, and if they haven't moved him by March, they'll be calling you and begging you to take him for a B-prospect, probably throw in some cash as well.

Buying Pierre right now would be like buying an XBox 360 on Ebay. You'll get what you want, but you can get the same thing if you wait a couple of months for a fraction of the cost.

I'd do that deal for Kearns, but why are we targeting him at this juncture? He's not a great corner OF, and his best year in the majors was very flukish. I'd do that deal late in the offseason if better options are off the market.

The only real chip we're giving up is Nolasco. I'll take a flier on Kearns for that price, even though he had the BABIP driven debut. Just don't count on him to be the solution.

Getting him at this juncture would seem to be hedging our bets on Murton. hopefully one of the two will shine and Mabry won't get much playing time.

Kearns for Mitre and Nolasco. Nice try, Reds.

Right now he's a .250/.345/.450 corner-outfielder with whatever defence. Maybe one day he'll quit striking out enough to be able to hit .270. And even then he wouldn't be that great for a corner outfielder. And that's what the Cubs need. A great corner outfielder. They need another big bat. Not Austin Kearns. Fair trade? Well, it's not that far out, but my gut reaction would still be no, the trading within the division factor.

Exactly. While that's a fair deal for Kearns, Kearns shouldn't be our top priority. Wilkerson, Bradley, Dunn, and Abreu should be targets ahead of Kearns. When the Cubs become certain they can't get any of those guys, moving on Kearns should become an option.

I'm not advocating overpaying. As I said at the end of my post, "get Wilkerson instead."

Pierre could still bring something at the trade deadline next year if there is a contender that needs an outfielder or leadoff hitter. Yes, they could probably get more now than then, but if they aren't offered what they think is fair, they can wait it out. They don't HAVE to move him. They probably will move him though, and some team may end up paying more than they should.

If the Cubs are going to give up something of value, I'd rather them get something better than Pierre. I wouldn't mind Pierre, but if the price is Pie, look elsewhere.
