Cubs, Giants Discussing Nico Hoerner Trade

If you are "overwhelmed," yes.

I dont see how the Giants overwhelm you, but there are other teams out there that could. Something tells me Logan Webb is not on the table in these discussions.

Was going to post this yesterday but couldn't be bothered.

I guess if they are not anticipating re-signing him getting something is good?  A little surprised they're not keeping him for this season which you figure is an all in season.

Only way this makes sense is if they are going back into Free agency for one of the big bats. I don't see it.

Exactly.  Nico's value to the team alone would be incredibly difficult to replace.  Add in the fact that he has the QO draft pick coming back to the Cubs next year and I just don't see how there is any deal that makes sense.

Not particularly known for his power, Oracle Park would likely sap the little bit that he has, though he is always a threat on the base path. Over seven seasons with the Cubs he has been a slightly above average hitter with a .742 OPS and a 103 wRC+. There's always the possibility that Matt Shaw could be another candidate, though there has been no indication that his name has been brought up in any trade talks with the Giants or otherwise.

That would keep the Cubs from getting worse in 2026? I don' think there's anything.

Cubs get Ketel Marte

DBacks get Bryce Eldridge

Giants get Nico Hoerner

If the Cubs deal him to the Yankees it would be more of a quantity over quality deal but I'd like to see what the Cubs could do with LaGrange. 6'7 250 and throws 103. Threw 120 innings last year. If the Cubs can help him keep improving that BB number he could be a monster. He was really good at A+, could be turning a corner.

The Giants don't have a great farm system and no one on their MLB roster I'd want in a deal who would actually be available. I'm hoping this is just a "the Giants called, the Cubs said what it would take, the end" kind of thing.

Nope. This clearly shows the writer has no idea that Hoerner is a primarily a second baseman:

No, the bot wouldn’t have used that specific phrasing if they meant 2B. 

Is there a way a 3 team trade beteeen the Cubs, Red Sox and Dbacks can work?  I am thinking Cubs trade Hoerner and Shaw and end up with Marte and Mayer.  Dbacks maybe get Shaw and Abreu.  Boston gets Hoerner. Maybe something else has to be added somewhere. Honestly I live in Az. and it seems Marte isn’t a great clubhouse influence. It also appears that is important to the Cubs. So even if talent levels are even I am not sure if the Cubs would be interested. Does this type of deal overwhelm the Cubs enough to move Nico?

I honestly can't see any other scenario here - I mean unless as someone else said, unless it's Logan Webb, their prospects don't jump out at you and neither does anyone else as you say.   Some other teams may have something that would move the needle, I just don't think the Giants do?

I don’t see anything happening with Nico. But if it did it wouldn’t be until after the convention. I find it hard to believe they would make a trade that will automatically be disliked right before the convention.

Rosenthal floated a Peyton Tolle for Hoerner trade. This kind of a trade would be one I'd have to think heavily about. On one hand, it unquestionably makes the Cubs worse in 2026. Shaw might be a 3 win fWAR 2b, but it's a bit "theoretical". You could probably go find a middle infielder on a $6m deal as a backup, maybe you bring back Willi Castro or something on a 1/$8m or something, but you're a worse team on paper. 

On the other end, I think Peyton Tolle is a stud. A LHP with a 36 K% in Triple-A, big velo and has always had strong walk-against numbers. His fastball is a killer and the Cubs love this kind of arm. And you could be looking at a rotation of the future of Cabrera, Horton, Wiggins and Tolle. Essentially flipping from the "old, low velo" rotation the Cubs had as recently as 2024 to one of extreme youth and velo.

Just reading fans comments in other places . Giants fans think Luis Matos and Whisenhunt would get them Nico . Cubs fans are asking for Logan Webb 😂

I thought I had gone insane thinking I totally missed that Hoerner was our SS last year.
