  1. It's too bad that the Cubs are the only team in baseball to not develop players capable of playing 1B. If we would we wouldn't have to play veterans we have no intention of keeping while the team is 20 games under .500 This is just stupid. We have 4 different minor league teams from which we could pull an first baseman from...this should have absolutely no effect on moving Nevin...it will, but it shouldn't. No matter what any guy we put out there does it will have no effect on this season...and indeed, if we give a young guy some time, it actually might help us for next season...Nevin just HAS to be moved not because he's a bad guy but because he's the freaking posterchild of the kind of guy who needs to be moved off of a team that has no hope of contending this year.
  2. Yep. Finally broke the Thursday jinx !! SeriouslY??? 4 months into the seaon and its the first time we won on a Thursday?
  3. I was just looking back....Z has 10 wins...and the bullpen has blown three games which would have given him wins.... Now I know Wins are a pretty crappy stat by which to judge a pitcher...but that being said...Z should be 13-3 on a team 20 games under .500. That is pretty amazing....especially considering that he started out the year as crappy z.
  4. Juan's been on base 35 times this year??? :D no, some of those he stole 2nd and 3rd. :D Ahh...that maks much more sense!
  5. Juan's been on base 35 times this year??? :D
  6. all these damn walks...they are clogging up the bases.
  7. I disagree that the lineup order would improve this team much. Wow Thanks for the insight. OBP off all of those spots in the lineup with current players and splits included. Pierre (320), Barrett (399), Lee (396), Aramis (324), Jones/Murton (372), Walker (356), Jones/Murton (287), Cedeno (280). no need for the sarcasm just because your argument has been proven wrong by dozens of people who do nothing but analyze baseball. Not to jump into the fray...but...(jumps)...so would these same people say it makes no difference if you hit the pitcher and Neifi in front of Lee? I think it makes a difference...it doesnt' make this mess of a team a contender, but how Dusty constructs a line up does make a diffefrence.
  8. This is the same Steve Philips who last night said the A's are interested in trading for Alphonso Soriano. If there's an player who's the antithesis of BillyBall, it's Soriano. Not only that, but he said that Soriano would fit perfectly with Billy Beane's aggressive style of play. . . the second part, fitting in with Beane's aggressive style of play, is absurd. but it is not beyond Beane to go out and get a player that doesn't fit his overall philosophy to make a playoff push. we are talking about the guy who repeatedly traded for a proven closer. that's one of his strengths imo, the willingness to do what is necessary in a given moment, even if it doesn't fit in with what he preaches. I've been thinking about Beane lately, and think he deserves some criticism, or at least whether his roster in the macro fits some of his overall philosophies needs to be looked at. it appears he chose the wrong guy to keep in Chavez. Tejeda and Giambi continue to put up great numbers, while Chavez has had a couple of down years. he may get nothing out of the last of his aces, Zito. a huge chunk of his payroll is taken up with two players who aren't earning their money, Loiaza and Kendall. furthermore, the only minor leaguers who seem to come up and make an impact are players that traditional scouts salivated over. not saying Moneyball or SABR or Beane is wrong. I just think the job he's done over the past three years needs to be reexamined and is deserving of some criticism. I was thinking the same thing...especially after listening to XM this morning when they brought up the stat that Oakland is at or near the bottom in runs scored in the AL...Billy ball doesn't seem to be scoring any more runs than Dusty ball...and that's hard to do.
  9. That's what you get for "being aggressive". I can't believe Trachsel is still playing. He's only 35 but he seems so much older. No kidding...I remember him being old and no good and that had to have been back in what...98 was the last time he was with the Cubs? He actually wasn't old then I guess...just no good...and then I may have been wrong there too...one of those back of the rotation guys that would have been a heck of a lot better than sending Rusch out there...heck, I bet he's seen a LOT more innings than even KWood in that time.
  10. He was...exactly what you expected....said nothing except...we think we got better.
  11. I was thinking the exact same thing...this deal looks like one that will make the Nats much better for their "playoff push"
  12. Is there ANY chance this is a prelude to something else? someone suggested they may be interested in bringing in Tejada as well but I'd have to think that is WAY to much money for them to spend...Kern AND Lopez?? Is Hendry even trying? I'd think that my suggestion he try for Freel a few days ago may actually have been a possiblity after I saw this.
  13. Huff has put up good numbers over the last month and a half.
  14. Ok...forget Dusty for a second as his horses were out... ](*,) How can the coaching staff still have a job...I can't think of one single guy on the team, aside from Lee, over the last 2 years that has met or exceeded expectations when it comes to offensive performance. How is no one accountable for that.
  15. Why in the sam hell was Z standing anywhere near a fungo bat while it was being swung? x-rays...its not even commical anymore...you couldn't make this stuff up
  16. I don't want to get in the Neifi/ Walker/ Pagan love fest...I'd just like to point out that somewhere way back in the beginning of the thread I think I predicted Capuano would pitch a CG SO.... For my next feat... The Sun will rise tomorrow.
  17. Are there any combination of any four such players that would all make the Reds? Howry, Ohman, Nevin, Mabry? I don't think we have 2 bench players that would make their team.
  18. Shouldn't be a problem...I think Capuano has thrown something like 17 scoreless innings in his two starts against us this year...we should have no problem losing this one.
  19. ditto. Maybe Demps AND a good middle reliever is a bit much...but it solves a long term problem, and does it cheaply...I'd sure like to know what they'd want.
  20. I'd give Dempster and a middle relief guy. I love Demps...great guy...but nights like last night...and 5 of his last 10 opportunities scare the hell out of me...give me freel...we'll find a closer.
  21. For some unknown reason reason, Cincy seems unable to fit Ryan Freel into their lineup, this, despite his speed (which we all know doesn't slump) and that other little unimportant stat, a .378 OBP. Anyone who has watched Cincy knows they are in desparate need of bullpen help(see the last two nights as an example)...with a decent bullpen they have a legit shot at overtaking St.Louis...what about Howry and Miller, or some other combination of our pitching for Freel...he solves several problems going forward, can hit leadoff, play center, gets on base, and the Reds don't play him every day...besides this making sense, tell me why the Cubs wouldn't do it.
  22. Sammy's been hanging out with Glendon.
  23. Who is this guy wearing Pierre's uni? (Crosses finger that trade value is steadily increasing)
  24. Wait...this is 3 games in a row Neifi didn't start...you can't tell me Dusty hasn't been fired.
