  1. Certainly we would keep Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, and Barrett. That's would be a good balance of Vets and Youngsters. I don't think Derosa should be starting but used as a supersub. Put Patterson in there. Jones should be gone so Murton can play everyday. Ken
  2. Starting with the hiring of Lou Piniella, it seems the Cubs organization is desparate to win a World Series. Obviously, they need to. However, it seems to me that instead of grooming young players to give them a chance to mature thus giving us a great chance to be competitive a couple years down the road, it seems that we are playing more veterans in order to win the big one right now. (obviously Hendry is feeling the pressure to win). This "veteran-only" mentality was terrible under Baker, and while it has gotten better under Lou (Theriot would never be playing this much under Dusty), we still are favoring the veteran over the young player. How in the heck will Murton ever learn to hit from both sides of the plate if he keeps getting platooned? Playing him everday would also give him the opportunity to grow into more of a power hitter which I believe he has great potential. It's refreshing to see more of Theriot, but Itzuris should never start and only should be used as a late-innings defensive guy. I just think we need to go with a younger team even if it means we have a few growing pains (Theriot, Patterson, Pie, Murton, Guzman). I believe it will pay dividends in the long-term, not to mention saving us $$$ on washed up vets. Ken
  3. I hope you're young (like college age or younger)... you'll harden with time. If you're older than me, then you're screwed.
  4. I've learned a long time ago never to let the Cubs ruin my day (life).
  5. Are you sure you're concerned about Cliff??
  6. but it still comes in behind "playing with Hank Aaron." Who played with Hank Aaron? I bet that was cool. Dusty did. No way. Way. Aaron was still playing with the Braves during Dusty's early years as a player. That must have been something. I wonder who was on deck when Aaron broke the Babe's record. Whoever it was, I bet he never forgot it. dat be one Dusty Baker.
  7. I found the bolded part quite interesting-I've never heard a player phrase it in quite that way before. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270425116 I think baseball fundamentals says you just swing for contact...and if you hit a home run, you got the luck of the draw. I think there are definitely times when a player goes up thinking homerun, obviously if you are down by 2 with 2 men on base in the 9th, and your power hitter is up, you think home run. But more times than not, swinging for the fences doesn't produce the desired result. Ken
  8. I hope Hendry is re-thinking this long term contract thingy...
  9. That's my bet.
  10. My question was not how Lou has performed as a game manager, but how has he done thus far? I know it is early, but he already has had a lot of face time with the media, made some major decisions, and given us quite a few quotes in stark contrast to Dusty. I will give him a grade after the 1st month, mid season, and then a final grade. You don't have to participate if you don't want to. :)
  11. My two favorite decisions are Murton as #2/Izturis #8, and Theriot making the team. I really feel that he's going to play performers, not just veterans as you know who did. I understand the tentiveness, but with Baker, this wouldn't even stand a chance. Lou has already mentioned Murton as #2 -- and we're only in Spring Training. If Murton gets 500+ ABs and the vast majority of them are in the 2-hole, that will be my favorite decision. I'm not sold that will happen.

  13. I know it's still early, but I thought it would be interesting to give a grade to how our manager has done so far. I know there were a lot of people who didn't want Lou selected, but thus far I am very very impressed. My grade is an A- Ken
  14. We've finally come to the point where we are not relying on Wood and Prior. I think that bodes much better for this organization. If one or both come back strong, then that's a big plus. If not, our team is not hanging it's cap on the hopes that they will be our saviors.
  15. I like this quote the best: What a frickin' breath of fresh air!!!!!
  16. at least it's in the dictionary: http://www.bartleby.com/61/84/I0238400.html Irregardless, it's still improper usage. :D It's called the modern English language. Get on board or get left behind. It is quite common for languages to adapt over the years. There are many English words that had quite another meaning in the 1800's.
  17. I dunno, how does "Riot" stand up defensively...comparitively? Ken
  18. You call him bitter??? Maybe you should check out your own attitude. Wishing something like that on someone is downright inhumane.
  19. Seconded. All in favor? Ay! eye. oy!!
  20. From the article: I'd like to hear Sandberg say what he thought of the Dusty era. I'm sure he wouldn't have too many nice things to say. Ken
  21. What do you do with a player who never tested positive for steroids, yet we all know cheated? Example: Sammy Sosa Because baseball never really tested for steroids for a long period of time, to be fair, you should only exclude players who legally tested positive. Otherwise, it is just hearsay. McGuire should get in....Sammy should get in. Bonds should not. Ken
  22. So aside from the 3rd inning, which I think Gooney quoted earlier, Kerry's 1st inning base on balls is next highest. He's also allowed the most 1st inning hits as well. He is also 2nd in 1st inning home runs. I wonder if being a closer would toughen up Kerry mentally so he would cut down those 1st inning walks and hits?
