  1. I really dont understand all the talk about us needing a starter. Z and Lilly are a good 1-2 combo, and Rich Hill and Marshall's numbers are better than 3/4 of the #3 starters in baseball. Marshall seems to really catch alot of the "I just dont trust him" comments and can I ask why? look at these numbers...2 2 1 1 2 4 0 6 2 2 1 You know what those numbers are? Those are the earned runs given up by Marshall in his 11 starts, seriously what more does this guy have to do to garner some faith? Rich Hills numbers put him in the top 30 pitchers in baseball, and you dont think he is good enough to be a number 3 starter? What do you expect out of a number 3, because you are going to be hard pressed to find somebody with better numbers than Hill and Marshall. I have my doubts on how well they'll pitch in a playoff push in September. Hill started out great but has been unpredictable lately. The same for Marshall. Assuming, the Cubs 5 starter rotation is set through the rest of the year, let's get together and talk at the end of September. I will gladly admit I was wrong if Marquis, Hill, and Marshall are pitching strong and consistent. All 3 have been showing signs of inconsistency. I have my doubts, however. that in a playoff race, they will be consistent enough to win. If we don't get another bat, and it's looking more and more like we won't, it's gonna be our pitching that will define whether we are a legitimate playoff team or not.
  2. Zing.....back at ya. I do not like Barry Bonds.
  3. This is exactly what I fear....a Marquis meltdown...or should I say, the Marquis we all expected when he was signed. I really hope the Cubs get a good starter by the trade deadline, but I'm not sure who's available. Z and Lily are a good 1 and 2, but I don't think Marquis should be a number 3...neither do I think Hill and Marshall should be for that matter. I worry about how those bottom 3 guys will do in a playoff scenerio. It's like holding your breath and wondering what pitcher will show up on any given day. Ken
  4. that's awesome. 2 games back from the brew crew, and 1 game back in the wildcard right? It's just so great to actually be competitive and have something to root foor. I'm watching the cubs last night dismantle a bad cardinals teams, and i watched every pitch. I love to see us on the correct end of a butt whooping in Busch. 1/2 game back in wild card.....we could be in the wild card lead at the end of the night! Ken
  5. I'm amazed....and very happy. :) :) :)
  6. Has there been a Cubs - Brewers head to head (player) comparison thread? The Cubs could be only one game out by end of night as Brewers lost to the Reds (in the 10th)...yeah!! I know the Cubs and Reds both have super easy schedules the rest of the year so it will come down to talent. Who do you all think is the most talented of the two? Ken
  7. This team reminds me of the 1989 team. Let's hope it reminds us of the 1908 team.
  8. Yeah!!! The Reds just won in the bottom of the 10th!!
  9. Thanks, man!
  10. one word -- VETERAN. Hendry thinks we need another vet for the playoff push -- even if that veteran is on the downside of his career. But that is the difference between us and Hendry....Hendry doesn't see him on the downside...and that ladies and gentlemen, is very sad AND the main reason the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908. Ken Hendry's inability to see Kendall's downside is the main reason the Cubs haven't won a World Series in almost 100 years? Geez...don't people know how to read?? I didn't say Hendry's inability...I said HIS PHILOSOPHY.....adhered to by Cubs management since the dawn of time. Hendry simply grabbed the baton handed to him. If you're going to use silly hyperbole, you should expect to be called on it. Do you really think that my use of hyperbole was silly? Hyperbole is usually based on fact which is exactly what I have stated -- fact. Do you not see that the Cubs have always gone after the washed up vet for many, many years? This is exactly what we got in Kendall....and with that philosophy we will never win the big one. Washed up vets rarely turn into superstars at the end of their career. No one should be surprised that Kendall is sucking. I hope that Hendry got Kendall with the idea of pulling off a big trade, but somehow I am not optimistic.

But when you write what is bolded, people get confused. I bolded one word -- philosophy. That was what I emphasized, not Hendry. It only goes to show, people read what they want to read.

But that is the difference between us and Hendry....Hendry doesn't see him on the downside...and that ladies and gentlemen, is very sad AND the main reason the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908. Ken I understand what you're saying, but Jim Hendry is not the reason we haven't won a WS since 1908. I'm not saying that.....what I am saying is that Hendry's philosophy is why the Cubs haven't won -- his philosophy being to hire crusty old vets at the end of their career (for dirt cheap) and hoping they have some sort of resurgence. I will say, though, that the jury is still out on Kendall after only a few games -- but right now, it's not lookin' too good. Ken

  15. That may be the best rationale I've heard yet. Not that I agree with that, I think Murton should play everyday. He's got patience at the plate which the Cubs desparately need. But I think this rationale may be in the minds of Cubs managment.
  16. Seriously, does Kendall have some embarassing pictures of Len?
  17. A conversation between him and an excited Devin Hester would be fun to hear. Fixed. Throw in an interrupting Michael Irvin for good measure? Now there is one irritating dude.
  18. I'd much rather have that than a manager like Baker defying all the critics and sticking with a move simply because of pride. As fiery as Piniella is, he's got much more humility than toothpick Sally. Ken
  19. I will give Itzuris credit for this statement:
  20. I will give Izturis credit for these comments:
  21. No doubt, but Cubs made the front page on ESPN because of it. So Barry's notoriety worked to the Cubs benefit. I like it when the Cubs do well and the media talks about them.
  22. I was one of the ones who believed we should have kept Michael. I liked his enthusiasm and his "seeming" committment to the Cubs (example: trying to get Nomar to resign with the Cubs). Personally, I knew he would come around offensively-- but....we don't know all the behind-the scene issues between Michael and the pitching staff. If he wasn't well-liked, it probably wouldn't be a good thing to keep him around the clubhouse. Having said that, I'm not estactic, but I'm OK with Jason Kendall. On all accounts, he is well-liked, calls a great game, and works hard to know all he can about each hitter.
  23. I've already had 3 people come up to me talking about last nights victory and the Jason Kendall trade -- people who really don't follow baseball a whole lot. They know I'm a Cubs fan by my "fan stuff" at my desk. I love that the Cubs are getting this exposure....though I don't believe it will last. But it's good, for at least the briefest of times that the Cubs are at the forefront of the news and not the Yankees or Red Sox.
  24. I couldn't agree more. Kendall is struggling this year, but he will be no worse than what we already have at that position, and with the Cubs in the playoff hunt, a veteran (who is likable) who knows how to handle a pitching staff WILL NOT hurt the Cubs. I agree that the Cubs need more, and if this is all they do, I will be disappinted. Here's hoping for a BIG trade! Ken
  25. That's exactly what I'm asking, though I highly doubt we will catch the Brewers before the trading deadline. I'm hoping we can dump Itzuris and Jones, but I'm not optimistic. I just do not feel that we can make a real run for it with the existing pieces. I am equally not optimistic that we will get the one more bat that we need. I hope I'm wrong.
