  1. I was always (and still am) a believer in a home-grown ballclub. I hate the Yankees for the simple reason that they think they can buy a championship every year (though you got to admire Steinbrenner's desire to win). What should we do with the payroll? Should we increase it and go for big name FA's or reduce it and go with guys like Theriot, Guzman, etc? Are Cubs fans too inpatient to wait for a home-grown club to be a contender? Ken
  2. I have a feeling Hendry is gonna do some big things this off season....knowing his job is in serious jeopardy.
  3. Here's two more verses: Same ol’ song, chewin’ on the toothpick while his team melts down All he does, crumbles to the ground…and so true fans can see…. Chorus: Dusty can’t win…All we know is Dusty can’t win. Don’t hang on….nothing lasts forever ‘cept the Bartman curse It slips away, another piss-poor season of mediocrity. Chorus: Dusty can’t win…All we know is Dusty can’t win.
  4. I close my eyes... Only for a moment and the game is done Fourteen-three Three grand slams, two errors, and the Cardinals won. Dusty can't win. All we know is Dusty can't win. Now that's funny!
  5. Hendry better be on the phone to him 30 seconds later. I agree. By the sounds of the article, the players really liked him. He sounds like he really is a player's manager, except he believes in instilling discipline...something Dusty sorely lacked.
  6. Damn....can't I ever be first with a quote!!!
  7. Quote in USA Today: "I know I haven't given this organization or the fans or this team what they paid for two, three years ago. There's an obligation there, absolutely. This organization has given me a chance to play baseball, and they drafted me. There's definitely loyalty here. We'll talk and decide what's best for the organization and best for me, and hopefully that's staying here." Very impressive. Now I wish Mark Prior had the same attitude. Ken
  8. Yeah, dream on. I'm beginning to believe that 2003 was the fluke...the norm is Kerry Wood on the DL.
  9. No, I'm not missing the point. I'm happy he's gone too because I want the Cubs to win. But to keep demeaning the man is cruel and frankly, it's not the right thing to do. Look at yourself in the mirror. I'll bet you all are the type that make fun of people behind their backs, and wouldn't have the guts to talk to them face to face with them. I came to this thread to make a point.....I could give a flying flip what you think of me coming into this thread. Through all the slam Nefi threads, I have said very little. At least you all had the humanity to wish Glendon well with his medical condition. You all have the last word.
  10. You all are missing the point.....the point is....can't you wish the man well. Do you have to keep pounding his faults even when he's gone????
  11. Under the heading "NORTH SIDE BASEBALL." Frankly, I don't give two hoots how he's doing in Detroit. Actually, I do. I hope he does well and I wish him the best. I just wish people would stop ragging on him and just move on. Sometimes it's the bitterness of the fans that makes one sometimes embarrased to be called a Cubs fan.
  12. I appreciate the advice. But it's rather annoying when people keep pounding the fact (by starting new threads) on how poor a baseball player he was (is). We heard it all year. My suggestion to you is stop your hatred/bitterness of Nefi and move on. It would do us all well to talk about something else. Ken P.S. As well, give the man a break. It wasn't his fault that he was given a huge contract and mega playing time. I'm sure if it was you, you would have done the same thing as him (or maybe you would have been above that, announced you sucked, and refused to play or accept any money from the Cubs) Give him some respect now. It's called, having respect for a fellow human being.
  13. But he still plays baseball, correct? You sure know how to beat a dead horse. Nefi Perez is no longer a problem of the Chicago Cubs. Don't you think his name has been discussed enough? Are you gonna provide weekly updates of his performance the rest of his career? If so, please do it in the humor section.
  14. He gone....no need to keep talkin' about him. I wish him the best.
  15. ....takes responsibility for his stench. "I'm falling behind hitters," Dempster said. "I've got to be more aggressive and go after people. This is ridiculous. I'm a big-league pitcher. Start acting like one. Start throwing the ball over the plate. They didn't hit a ball out of the infield and they scored a run. That's pathetic. "I'm never one to make excuses -- I'm not making any excuses," he said. "Make them hit the ball. I don't care if somebody's hitting .500; there's a chance of them making an out." Has Dusty Baker, once, taken responsibility....in 3 years....for his ineptitude? Heck, has he ever in his career said, "I blew it."? I personally like Dempster. I think rightly used, he could be a good setup guy. Ken
  16. Only one -- and his name is Dusty Baker.
  17. My sense is that this is and always will be a Cubs town. As bad as we are now, opening day '07 will be a huge sell out and it will be that way if and when the Cubs start stinking it up again. Fans always hold out hope until, of course, there is none. Last night's attendance tells me the fans have finally given up this year.
  18. Does anyone know the original thread with Dusty's brilliant quote on walks clogging the bases? I'm a little bummed out right now and I need a good laugh. thanks.
  19. I'll give you 10 bucks to tear up the tickets. Ken
  20. From an ESPN article: ... the Bombers have been anything but the monster home run hitters they envisioned this spring, and they'll fall well short of the 1,000 runs they were supposed to score (at least in their dreams). In fact, when the Yankees begin a three-game series with the White Sox, they'll be facing an opponent that has scored more runs, blasted more HRs, and hit for a higher average and slugging percentage. Surprisingly, though, the Yankees have drawn 74 more walks than the defending world champs, and therein lies what Joe Torre calls the secret to October success. In fact, acquiring Abreu from the Phillies wasn't just about replacing Gary Sheffield's run production. It was designed to promote an improvement in the Yankees' on-base percentage, and more specifically, to wear out opposing pitchers by going deeper into counts.
  21. I'm not sure about that. You could make an argument that the Cubs owe him a chance to make up for the likelihood that it was Dusty's abuse in 2003 that lead to his injuries the past few years (remember, he didn't miss a single start in 2002 or 2003; it was after Dusty abused his starters in 2003 that both Wood and Prior were injured more). IMO, Kerry's arm and shoulder problems have nothing to do with 2003 overuse (which to me is a debatable question anyway), but rather, his terrible throwing form.
  22. The Cubs don't owe Wood a dang thing. Wood owes the Cubs. Regardless of what offers Wood gets from other clubs, he should decline all of them and come back with the Cubs for at least one year - maybe 2 (if a low base salary, incentive-laden contract can be mutually agreed upon). He owes the fans at least another try to get some production from him. I like Kerry Wood, but the idea that the Cubs owe him is ridiculous. With all the money we've invested in Wood and the disappointment he has been most of the time while in a Cubs uniform, his attitude should be one of owing the club and the fans and not seek some ridiculous salary (not that many teams would take a chance with a long-term contract). To Jim Hendry: Sign Wood for at least a one year, low base, incentive-laden contract as a reliever. Ken I think "owe him a chance" is a questionable choice of words. No, they don't owe him anything. But they should give him another chance at the right price as a reliever. Yes, they should give him another chance because he did give us a glimmer of hope that he could be a very effective reliever and the fact that we've invested big bucks in him for very little return

  24. I blame both the players and Dusty. The Dusty issue can be easily taken care relatively easy. The players are a little harder. Who knows...maybe a new manager will insire the players to play fundamentally sound...something this team has sorely lacked. Z did right to publically endorse Baker....that's what he should do....but there is no doubt in my mind Baker has to go....the sooner the better! Ken
