  1. Isiah Thomas or Jim Harrick to IU?? =P~ There's a lot of talk that Tony Bennett is the favorite for IU. There is also a LOT of Pitino to IU chatter, as well. While I don't really believe that Rick Pitino will end up at Indiana, that certainly has been the majority of the scuttlebutt over the past week or so here. I can say that IU's administration not only seems adamant on a big name type coach, but some seem very proud of themselves as if it's just a matter of time. I have concerns because I don't believe them, nor do I trust their opinion of what constitutes a "big name." I like Tony Bennett a lot. Isiah Thomas is a big name. While I'm not concerned about Thomas actually getting the job, I'm still concerned about this big name obsession. Because, you're right, Thomas is certainly a big name. Someone was on ESPN (NBA analyst) said that Thomas just sat on the bench the whole game and has basically quit. I wouldn't want a guy like that near my school no matter what the name is.
  2. I think he's a bit too much West coast, especially with his recruiting connections. He'd probably be most successful staying in the Pac-10. I'm a big fan of Montgomery's. However, besides the west coast connections, he's 61 years old. He's a very good coach but IU should go a different direction. If they want an older coach why not snap up Gene Hackman?
  3. That's possible and it's also possible that Theriot will work on his weaknesses and limit the holes. I'll grant you it's possible. He is closing in on 30, though. And I do think that matters. True. He could also be learning how to hit better with he coaches and closing those holes a little more. I'm not saying he will but he seems to work hard and is trying to get better. If the Riot can put up a 280/350 I'll be happy.
  4. only if The Macarena and Mambo No. 5 are taken You took the words right out of my mouth. I know some of them have been jokes, but a lot of people (both here and in the comments of that blog) have had some horrific choices for closer songs. That would be Meatloaf. Are you suggesting this song. That would be great too. Dashboard? That would an interesting song for Wood! The song I bolded I think is of the same name.

  7. Didn't the Cards gamble on a lot of DL type pitchers this off season due to the lack of talent? Not other than Clement. Mulder, Carpenter, and Kinney are all coming off surgery from last year, Piniero developed some shoulder issues during ST, and I'm not sure about Johnson, he may have had some lingering injury from last season. Thanks mul, I thought they might have dipped into the Miller type player thinking.
  8. That's a great point. Many LL coaches will find a loophole anytime they can.
  9. Maybe if he is fadding, it's Lou's job to give him the proper rest. This is where DeRosa could come in handy if Roberts were acquired.
  10. Hustle and fundamental adeptness are certainly desirable values in an athlete. I believe the issues arise when these characteristics are deemed "the right way" to play the game by the Old Guard. Stat oriented individuals gravitate towards events which have a quantifiable effect on winning ballgames. The establishments emphasis on playing the game "the right way" has very little measurable correlation to victories. I believe this is where the two sides often clash. Perception, especially by the press and fans, can also make it seem as if a player isn't trying or doing the fundamentals. Look at Manny. I have no idea on how hard he works at hitting and we all know he produces at the plate so he is doing his job. Now he IS going to screw up, like yesterday when he watched his ball hit the fence after thinking it was out, but he produces like few others. As for players like Theriot, I like the fact that he is working hard and does a lot of fundamentals correctly. I think Cedeno and Theriot show a really good example of this. One is more talented and the other is getting the most out of his talent. Out of curiosity, is there a stat that shows baserunning/mental fielding errors?
  11. I agree that this grit factor thing is many times over valued but I do not see anything wrong with a player that hustles and does a lot of things fundamentally correct.
  12. That is kind of funky. I wonder if things changed between them after the first book or something else made it hard for him to mention ARod? He's probably just shy. Writing a note to someone in your second book sounds just like junior high, only this time it involves a D-list celebrity and there's no spring dance involved. He had stardom thrown at him at an early age. The very first game he went to they sang about him with their hands on their hearts and it was bound to go to his head. You know the song, Jose can you see.

  14. So he really is a brown eyed handsome man.
  15. I'm going to guess they start with: Blanco Cedeno Fontenot Johnson Ward Cintron will be on the DL and will replace whichever young backup MI plays worse by May. What do they do with Murton? Since they have Lieber to eat innings out of the pen, I could see sanity prevail and the Cubs start with an 11 man pitching staff with Hart sent to AAA. He'll be traded for a young pitcher who is coming off an arm injury who throws hard and can't throw strikes.

  17. I wonder what's going on at Michigan? http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10737931
  18. Maybe they ranked them by most recognizable names. Williams, Calipari, and Huggins are mediocre coaches. The first 2 just get great talent. Huggins is a great motivator. My top 5 would be Howland, Ryan, Miller, Bennett, Izzo. Is that the Sean Miller that used to play at Pitt? Yes. Thanks. Do any of you remember when he was on Johnny Carson as a 3 or 4 year old and showed off his dribbling skills?
  19. I don't remember Reed playing CF when he was here. I'd swear he was mostly a LF but I obviously am wrong.
  20. What should have been in 84 I hope happens in 08.
  21. Just like communism. I think Jose is a bitter attention munger. I'll read/listen to what he has to say and hopefully the facts show him to be right or wrong and don't linger around to hurt an innocent person who has a big name as Jose knows he would get a lot of attention for naming in his book. Let's face it, if he says Irving Snotamorger hit on his wife, who would care?
  22. True...very true. How has Miggy hit this spring? .713 .713 ops that is. put the weight back on, dude. Wow.....oh ops, thanks.
  23. i think the cubs are (were?) a bit concerned about hill. he threw in the bullpen for quite a while after his last terrible outing, and they had a guy stand there like he was a hitter, which seems a little strange. also, i was walking to my seat yesterday at hohokam when i walked by an open door to the cubs' weight room. i stood there and watched fukudome, wood and dempster (who did a LOT of stuff considering he was pitching that day) do their exercises for a while, then hill came in and went through his pitching motion a bunch of times while looking in the mirror. ps - he also pulled himself up on the pull up bar and hung by his knees like a monkey for a second, and i really wish i could have gotten my camera out to catch that moment because it would have made a great avatar. Interesting. We have batters stand in and track the ball and also to get pitchers used to having a hitter in there. Some pitchers get into a comfort zone when they don't have a hitter and since Hill struggled maybe the Cubs thought he should throw some pitches with a hitter there. I've always thought his biggest enemy is himself and his lack of challenging hitters. He did a great job of going after hitters last year and I hope he continues along that path.
