  1. Me three.....that is Tim McCarver dumb.
  2. funny, from what i've read the phillies wish they didnt sign him to a no trade clause so they could trade abreu. I'm just shocked by that. He's one of the top 10 players in the game. Philly fans booed Mike Schmidt the first five seasons he played for the team. The Phillies got rid of a yong Rolen after a bad season and a half. They are not the smartest organization in baseball. But then again neither have the Cubs. In all fairness, Philly didn't trade Rolen because of a drop in production. They traded him becaue he let them know on several occasions that there was no way in the world he was going to stay with the franchise once he earned his FA rights. Remember all the go after Rolen threads we had? I'm pretty happy with the Cubs version of an oft injured 3rd baseman though.
  3. Im sure that if Nomar and Cedeno are the starting infielders next year (which I would be alright with) that between them, and backing up Ramirez at 3rd, he could get well over 100 starts. I just do not see that being ok with him. I'd have to think with all the teams that need a 2nd baseman he would have a chance to start somewhere. I think Boston and Minny are looking for starters and if I were him that's the route I'd go.
  4. I think he would sign with a team that he could start for.
  5. Abreu can't play CF can he? I wonder if the Phillies will get a GM that wants to make a big splash like Wade did by signing Thome....whoops, maybe not.
  6. How many tools does Giles have? You need plenty of tools for the Cubs to be interested.
  7. Jimy, are you hoping that we Cubs fans are rooting for the Cards? :D
  8. If they lose the NY Press is going to be pretty hard on them.
  9. I still think Huff has peaked and his numbers are going to continue to go south. Add to that he can't play defense well and I see it as a bad move. If it wasn't for the fact that the new owner is planning on spending more, I would have said that this is the offseason that Tampa Bay would shop Julio Lugo, who arguably might be a better bargain that Furcal. This is one area that Jim Hendry should keep close eyes and ears on. From all indications, Huff is lazy and a cancer in the clubhouse. Best to stay clear. I will. I hope Mr. Hendry does too! Cuse, ive never really understood your hatred for Huff. What makes you think he will be 2005 Huff and not 2002-2004 Huff? Reports are that he and management have had quite a few issues with the way theyve run the team and that he has not been happy at all losing in Tampa Bay. I can imagine that its pretty difficult being so motivated to play the game when you know you are going to lose I don't hate the dude. I just think that he isn't the player the Cubs need to go to the next level. He seems like a grass is always greener kind of player to me and if he was on the Cubs many would want him gone. I don't want a one dimentional player unless he can hit like a Manny Ramirez and Huff is far from being a Manny Ramirez.
  10. I suppose it could end up being Austin Kearns as the beat writers have indicated that Hendry likes him. If you are registered, there is an article about the Reds in the Dayton Daily News, where the columnist suggests that Kearns be traded to the Cubs and Wily Mo Pena to the Nationals for young pitchers. Hoops Kearns did hit that homerun against the Cubs that one time so I'd go after him if I were Hendry. He's a right handed Burnitz.
  11. By the way, just playing with a lineup after a series of moves like this, and the lineup is insane: Giles Giles Lee Helton Ramirez Barrett Murton Cedeno Assuming Helton at $14m (Rox have to pick up some of the deal if they trade him), Giles/Giles at 5.5/10, respectively, a crazy 3/30 deal for Wagner, a bench of Blanco/Theriot/Fontenot/Greenberg/1.1m OF, and I've got a $102.75m juggernaut. Having 2 minimum wage starter helps a lot. And with that lineup, you have to be happy to go with the kids on the bench. And 2 as starters.
  12. That would be great but can he play the OF? Would he want to? Does he have the arm to? Not everybody can play every position. Wasn't he a punter? Punters can do anything they put their mind to. He was a QB at Tennessee. At his age I really doubt he would accept something like this. I think it would help the Cubs bigtime but I really doubt he would agree to do it.
  13. I've listened to enough former pitchers BS about their past so much not to take their theories seriously. I don't doubt that pitchers think about the runner more. And I don't doubt that people think it has an affect. What I do doubt is that there is a substantial affect on the at-bats, over time. Just like the theory that Furcal is worth more than Walker because he can score from first more often, I'm sure there are specific cases where it's helped a batter to have a speedy guy on base in front of them. But I do not know that there is a substantial affect. And neither do you, no matter who told you what. Substantial....I don't know but it does have an effect. It has a huge effect at my level and it has to at the highest level...not at the same effect, but an impact. I also think the more the pressure the situation the more the effect. Plus...I've been agreeing with you all day and I just can't accept doing that.
  14. That's a popular theory, but to my knowledge no objective analysis actually backs it up. I think if a pitcher throws over to first he's thinking about he runner and they would do so if a Furcal type is on first. If you have ARam on first I see the pitcher giving all his time to the batter. Like I said, that's a popular theory, but to my knowledge no objective analysis actually backs it up. Simply thinking about the runner doesn't necessarily make it easier for the hitter. It's similar to the theory of "protection" for a hitter. It makes sense on paper, but it practice it hasn't really been proven to exist. I've talked to major league ptichers who have said it bothers them to have a fast basestealer on first. That shows that they are not concentrating on the batter as much as they should. That's enough for me.

  16. The Cubs have something in their hand but it's not a bird, and it most definitely is broke. I would not consider a trade of the studs if this team was coming off back to back 90+ win seasons, but this team sucks. Anything to improve them should be done. Would you trade ARam for Wilkerson and Hernandez and re-sign Nomar to play 3rd? I wouldn't. As much as I like Wilkerson, he's a huge downgrade from ARam. Nomar's still as likely to get hurt. And there are only handful of pitchers I would trade Ram for......Livan ain't one of them. Would you (or anyone) trade Zambrano for Miguel Cabrera. I would and use Cabrera back at SS. I concur! What would you do if he couldn't handle SS? Move him back to LF or trade ARam and put him at third?

  18. Hey everybody Syracuse and UConn are playing of ESPN2 tonight! Too bad it's football, eh? If anyone has some problems sleeping watch our offense....that should do it. It'll get better but this year it's just tough to watch...no deep threats, weak offensive line and a QB that just can not figure out how to look off a receiver.
  19. I would not be upset if Giles stayed on the west coast. I'd be pissed if he ended up anywhere else. Giles is not the end all be all. He's just the best option right now. It doesn't matter how he does it, the bottom line is Hendry has to make enormous improvements to the OF. Yeah, I'd be pretty ticked if Giles ends up in St. Louis or Houston. BBB would probably know this for sure, but I'm guessing Giles family still resides near San Diego. Am guessing it will be pretty tough to pull him out of Southern Ca. Who's your other OF choices after Giles?? Abreu obviously. Burrell and Floyd right?? I wonder if the Padres would move Loretta to the Braves for Giles? The brothers would then both be home.

Man, he has his work cut out for him.
  21. Right now they are discussing a multi year contract for the multi purposed Macias. What worries me is who Hendry confides in....Hughes. This and Baker may make any good move difficult. These guys still live in the 70's. Please tell me your'e kidding, Cuse. I just heard the same thing on ESPN Radio... :) Tell me that wouldn't light up this board? And yes Erik...I'm kidding.

These guys still live in the 70's. I just pictured Hendry hanging out in the regal beagle with Larry, trying to pick up chicks while discussing the Cubs future. :D Hughes with an Italian Horn chain around his neck and a really cool lime green leisure suit while Hendry bangs on a table and hoots like Kramer tying to break Joe D's concentration at the ladies.
  23. Sorry to say this...especially to you BbB but Greene reminds me of a young AGonz. I saw him play at that age and they are very much alike.
