  1. Interesting. See, that goes to show you that the Cubs can get Prior later in his career if they want too! Why do I see Manny going to the White Sox.
  2. Reed, yes. Harvey, probably. Why can't I remember who Reed is....what's his first name? Mark, the catcher, Jeremy's brother. That's right...thanks CPatt! What package would you put together to get Tejada?
  3. Reed, yes. Harvey, probably. Why can't I remember who Reed is....what's his first name?
  4. The problem with touting his upside is that he is the oldest pitcher in this entire discussion. If Bedard has upside from where he is right now, what about Prior. Rich Hill's older than Prior and people on this board still think he'll be the next Barry Zito even though he'll be 26 by the time the season starts. Bedard's older than Rich Hill and people in this organization think he'll be the next Barry Zito. Even though he'll be 27 by the time the season starts. And btw, what does what people think about Hill have anything to do with this? Nobody is mad about Hill being included in a deal for Tejada. I mentioned that back on page 421. The players that will be involved (if the deal does happen Tejada for Prior) are the key in this for me.
  5. That's pretty impressive, being able to throw with just one finger. I noticed that both Jones and Encarnacion show up one each others 'similar batters' list on Baseball Reference. Who shows up as #1 for each? Jose Guillen, which is absolutely not very fascinating. Once he starts to struggle and hits 220 the best fans in the world will throw out a different finger.
  6. Ahh yes....then it is indeed the perfect comprimise.
  7. He was listed as a"B" prospect in John Sickel's 2004 handbook. That info is nearly 2 years old now, however. Bedard was less than impressive in the majors. 2005: 141.7 IP, 4.00 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a .260 BAA. His minor league numbers do look outstanding, but if I'm trading Prior along with Hill, I want more than Tejada and Bedard. In the very least, I want a prospect like Markaris thrown back into the deal. Agreed. That said, in response to Goony and Sully's sentiments expressed above, I don't think that Prior is to blame for the Cubs losing ways or that this trade would cost the Cubs any shot this season. I think its a calculated gamble that is being considered by a desperate administration. Tejada will play every day and Prior, healthy or not, will not. There's upside and downside to both, and relying on our pitching has not gotten us very far over the last two years. I don't have a huge problem with trying something new. Its actually sort of what the Cards have done in the past - load up the lineup and rely on decent starters and a deep pen to keep you in games. However, if the deal is Prior and Hill, I sincerely hope that Jim has something up his sleeve to fill Prior's spot in th rotation (and his name better not be Rusch). I hope Hendry does pick up a couple of more leftys because you never know when Lenny Harris is going to hit....I want the Cubs ready.
  8. It doesn't look like he'll be starting anywhere. The Cubs need to pounce now. Eric Byrnes - OF - Orioles Pirates officials have spoken the past two days with agent Mike Sasson about Eric Byrnes. If he's a better choice than Juan Encarnacion, it's only because he'd cost less than Encarnacion. Not only should Byrnes not start over Craig Wilson, but he'd be a weaker choice than Jody Gerut against right-handers. If Byrnes is signed, Wilson would likely be traded. The Red Sox could view him as a platoon partner for Trot Nixon and the Indians could consider pairing him with Ben Broussard. Dec. 23 - 1:21 am et Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Gerut is somebody the Cubs ought to trade for....oh yeah they already did. I wanted us to hold on to Gerut. So much for that. I wanted us to hold on to Dubois...so much for that. (Wouldn't Dubois look good as Jones's platoon partner) Not in Dustys world.
  9. Looks like Prior is indeed on the table. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors I'm curious about these elbow troubles....has this been proved?
  10. When smoke starts building up around Hendry's deals, they usually catch fire. Furcal is the only one I can remember that he "lost" out on. If he wants to trade Prior, he will, and if he didn't want to trade Prior he would have told somebody by now. Yeah right...and the next thing Hendry will do is sign Jacque Jones and Perez to a 2 year deal.
  11. Hill and Bedard are similar in that both sides don't know if both, either, or neither will reach their potential. If we can get Byrnes or Craig Wilson to platoon with JJ, then we'll be set. And Weaver and I'd be ok with it. What worries me is the hit the Cubs payroll is going to take...will Hendry go reall cheap for the 5th OF and get a Macias type player?
  12. I really don't mind losing Prior as long as it's a good deal. I don't think this deal is that good for the Cubs if these are the players involved. I do mind losing Prior. I don't like trading pitching except where absolutely necessary. Now, I will trade anyone to make "my team" better. I just don't see how this makes the Cubs better. It seems like a stupid, short-sighted deal the likes of which we've never seen. Or perhaps we've seen it, only so long ago many have forgotten it. This is one of those deals that just needs not to occur. If we're going to have to trade one of our most valuable players -- a Cy Young caliber pitcher -- for an admittedly excellent SS, then I'm not interested. Additionally, this seems another example of Hendry selling low. Prior's "injury-prone" in the minds of many around baseball -- so why trade him when his value is low? I have a word for that: stupid. I sincerely hope that this is all smoke and no fire, because if there is fire, I think the maelstrom will quickly burn out of control. Anytime you trade a quality player like Prior it's normal to be upset or not like the trade. I agree about selling low but the idea to get the best pitching prospect back in the trade...as long as he really is quality, is a good idea IMO. The pessimist in me sees Tejada now being a 25/80/260 type hitter for the Cubs. I still want a full plaid guarentee from the O's that Tejada has never used steroids.
  13. I'm hoping that Hendry was really just over hyping Hill and this is the reason why! :sunny:
  14. Yeah.... and you can still be disowned, boy !! If you disown me for this, the terrorists win! Jim Hendry is a terrorist? Yes...when it comes to making the Cubs better he certainly is.
  15. I really don't mind losing Prior as long as it's a good deal. I don't think this deal is that good for the Cubs if these are the players involved.
  16. Phillips on ESPN said that he thinks Bedard is a 1 maybe 2 kind of starter and that he is almost as good as Zambrano....Victor or course.
  17. I always thought it would be a Prior or Hill kind of thing too...not both.
  18. There's always room for Neifi. Cedeno welcome to the bench.
  19. Words cannot express the rage that is filling me up. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Cubs: :titanic: Here's hoping Angelos thinks like we do. My money is that he thinks like Hendry. :x Is Hill a better prospect than Bedard? And...don't the O's still owe the Cubs a player from that player that retired?
  20. Doesn't Mauer have knee problems? I think he might be an AL type catcher/DH from here on.

  22. Gammons just said that he wouldn't make the Tejada for Prior deal because Prior is an injury risk. They also mentioned (Gammy + Phillips) on how great Bedyard (sp) is. Isn't he older than Prior? I heard the same thing. It is just like I wrote on page whatever. We see Prior differently than 99% of the baseball world. It doen't mean anyone is right or wrong in their view. Both Gammons and Phillips, mentioned that Bedard could be a # 1 or #2 starter down the road. What they were painfully ignorant on were the additional palyers that were being moved. I don't really think either of them know anything more than we do. I agree. I'm kind of bummed about that because I always thought that Gammons was really informative when I read the Sporting News many years ago. Now, I realize that maybe it was because Bill Conlin was the other beat writer and it just made him look better. A lot of posters have mentioned that smae thing, how we over value our players like most fans do of their teams. This is why the great comprimise is when both sides (fans) are feeling uneasy about a deal.
  23. I think Murton would be great #2 hitting in front of Lee (presumably) if Walker is no longer on the team (I hope he is, but whatever.). I'm going to try to avoid criticizing Dusty, but it does seem that Dusty prefers matching hitters with positions and positions with batting order. If Walker is still with the team, there's a good chance he bats 2nd, at least vs. RHers. Yay. If not, I don't think we'll see Murton batting there anytime soon. LFers don't bat 2nd. We'll see Neifi! or Cedeno, hopefully Cedeno because that would indicate Cedeno is doing extremely well. He'll have to, to beat out Neifi. If the Cubs have Cedeno at SS and Neifi! at 2B, I'm guessing Neifi is batting #2 and Cedeno is batting #8 (and Murton around 6-7) regardless of performance. I agree 100%. I'm hoping beyond hope that Hendry and Baker talked about Perez and his not batting second but I do fear that might see eye to eye on this.
