  1. Can they afford a pitcher after taking on Tejada? I don't think so. With Dusty and Neifi on the same team, I wouldn't count on Neifi sitting all that much. To make a trade for Tejada so that Neifi doesn't play as much would be masking the real problem. Dusty. A real bad masking job, IMO. I agree that Baker just makes any improvement moot. Personally, I'd like to see the Cubs stay young (Murton/Cedeno) lose a bunch of games and fire Baker hire a good manager and go to the playoffs. That's my big picture dream.
  2. And one is a SS and the other is a corner OF. Couldn't you match up Sandbergs numbers with a corner OF guy too and make him not look as good? Granted, the player cost is a big difference but I don't see how comparing a corner OF with a middle infielder stats and seeing them as the same value. That's exactly what was about to point out. It's a meaningless comparison. It's meaningless if you use it to rank the two players. It's not meaningless if you're talking about what that guy would bring to the team next year. Either Gonzo or Tejada would be fine for the 5th spot in the order, and both would bring similar production. The difference is what kind of production they would be replacing, Murton or Cedeno. Theoretically Murton would still be getting time against LHers, either replacing Gonzo or Jones, depending on the day. Gonzo would be replacing Murton vs RHP. Whereas Tejada would be replacing Cedeno vs just about everybody. Murton is likely to produce a bit more than Cedeno, but a nice chunk of that production would be against LHP. Against RHP he's not going to be as good. Without concerns for what you give up, you'd rather have Tejada, obviously. But when you take into account their similar production, you'd be insane to prefer Tejada + Murton - Prior over Gonzo + Cedeno + Prior. It's not even a debate. Color me insane because you forgot to add a pitcher that may come over in a trade or signed as a free agent. I also look at it as not having Perez in the lineup nearly as much especially if Walker is still on the team.

  4. I thought they had around 6 or were talking about in a row? :D
  5. I thought this guy made some decent cash? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2272046
  6. This also makes Prior even more desirable for other teams. I think the Cubs could get a major haul for him instead of him being included in a package.
  7. If Baltimore gets Prior and Zito for Tejada and Bedard they would have done quite nicely for themselves. I don't see how this benefits the Cubs in this case.
  8. I'm well aware, he was on my fantasy team at the time. For the record, before he was shutdown last year... 60.2 IP, 49 H, 3 HR, 14 BB, 52 K, 2.08 ERA Superficially very good. But, CPat, you know as well as I do that 49 hits allowed in 60.2 innings with just 52 strikeouts means luck on balls in play. His FIPS ERA is a whole run higher at 3.02. Make an adjustment for a flukishly low number of flyballs going out for home runs (in the long term, there's evidence to suggest that there's a universal trend amongst pitchers of 1 in 10 flyballs going for home runs), and his sustainable ERA is probably nearer around about 3.45. Still very good for the AL. But we're talking about the best spell Bedard's ever had. Isn't Camden Yards a hitters park? Well, for 2003-05... Baltimore, 0.94 R, 0.98 H, 0.92 2B, 1.00 HR, 1.06 BB, 0.96 K http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/weighted_park_factors_2003_2005/ 1.00 is neutral, below is pitcher friendly, higher is hitter friendly. So, not really. Since Bedard is a lefty how did righties hit there?

  10. He can't, and I'm one of his biggest fans. Well, okay, maybe he can be a marginal 2. He's got no shot at being a 1. Yeah but even for a dominate 3 let's say and a top 3 SS for a 1/2 pitcher? I think it would be worth it.
  11. My favorite non Cub pitcher of all time.
  12. What if Bedard can be a 1 or 2? You are getting a stud SS AND a 1 or 2 while trading a 1 in Prior. I'd do that trade if I was confident that Bedard could be a 1 or 2 in a second.
  13. That's because back then pitchers were real men and could pitch 300 innings so teams didn't have a 12 man staff. :player:
  14. A grammar, factual, and predictive error. The holy trinity of crappy writing. Grammatical. My resume to the Trib is in the mail. You didn't say you were from Missura did you?
  15. How many more runs is a 3.50 over a 1.90 when a pitcher throws 200 innings in a season? 1.6 * 200 / 9 = ~36 runs So if Prior has a really bad start in which he gives up 36 runs you would still rather have the 15 wins and more innings over the 22 wins and less innings? :D So, that's about a run a game correct? If I look at it that way no but what if it's just that Prior blows up for a few games and say he gives up 6 or 7 5 times but is dominate the rest of the time....I would rather take that then the consistant 2 and fewer wins. It also, going by your innings has him pitch less and the Cubs pen would be more effective in a 22 win scenario.

  17. Then move on and look elsewhere for help. Current Cubs + Tejada - Prior does not = champion. So there's no point in making the deal. Exactly. No deal is better than a terrible deal. Boston IMO is a better match for the Cubs, at least the Cubs have some parts that would interest Boston.
  18. And what makes you think Prior won't bolt the second he hits free agency? And what makes you think he will? Besides, the Cubs have Prior under control through 2008. Tejada can demand a trade one year after being traded. Damn your quickness! Solution: Dump Dusty after '06 = Keep Prior It's so eeeeeeeeeeeasssy like 1-2-5-3. Why wait?
  19. What does it say about Cedeno that Stockwell has no interest in him? I wonder why he would feel that way.
  20. I HIGHLY doubt that the only additional player it's going to take to get Hendry to throw in Pie is Jorge Julio. Hendry simply will not send Prior, Hill and Pie while only getting Tejada, Bedard and Julio in return. He's way too high on Hill and Pie to accept that. If Hendry trades Pie, Hill AND Prior....it's bye bye time. What if Manny AND Tejada were the result? That's different. If it's the deal that was just posted a big no but if it was for Manny and Tejada then yeah I'd do it.

  22. This makes me wonder if Hendry can just go to the Phils and see if they would do an Abreu for Prior trade.
  23. Cubs send Prior to the White Sox, Hill and Patterson to the O's. O's send Tejada to the Cubs, Bedard to the White Sox, Markakis to the Red Sox. Red Sox send Manny to O's, b-level prospect to White Sox. White Sox send Garland and Prior to Cubs. Is that the 4-way they were talking about? Prior ends up back on the Cubs...sweet!
