  1. I don't see how anybody could justify claiming the player would be getting punished in this scenario. The fact is he is not a free agent. Any claims that he should get more based on the current free agent pitching market are absolutely without merit. He isn't a free agent. He is owed nothing. He deserves nothing. He needs to come down on his price or go back to Japan making comparitively nothing. Free agents are making lots of money. He is not a free agent. He knew the rules going in. As did Boston when they bid 51 for him. He has choices unlike an arby guy. Yes, and his choice is to make a lot of money in Boston for the next few years or make a lot less in Japan. Arbitration always have the choice of not playing, but that's not a smart choice either. Boston knew he had Boras for an agent before they bid and should have realized that he'd want a big deal. IMO they have to pony up to at least 12 or they did this to stop the Yanks. If he signs for 5/40 he loses money. He could go back and make 6 and then get 5/65 at the least as a free agent.
  2. I can't stand Duke as well, but that's not quite true. They played Air Force and Marquette at a neutral site, and the go to Gonzaga. And even though they play a ton of home games, they play Air Force, Marquette, Indiana, Gonzaga, Georgetown, George Mason, Holy Cross, and Davidson all before the ACC season. They aren't playing the Sisters of the Poor. we should all know this, as all these games (and probably some practices) have been on ESPN. Even Bilus, who attended Duke, made a comment about how ridiculous this is. They play midmajors on National Television. Nice recruiting advantage. Why wasn't OSU vs. Cleveland St on? I would much rather watch Oden than McRoberts. I've said before and I'll preach it off the rooftops, Jay is one of if not thee best college basketball TV guys out there. Bilus is good, but I will never get over when he said that Deron Williams wouldn't even be among the ten best players in the ACC. Right before Illinois kicked the crap out of Wake Forest and Chris Paul. He was wrong true, he should have said 20 best players in the ACC! :D
  3. The Cubs might have the Weurtz closer out there.
  4. Heck Manny Rameriz always wants to be traded and he does just fine in Boston. Let Jones stew for awhile and if the Cubs can't move him, tough.

  6. I'm not opposed to that entirely, but I'm not convinced Felix is ready just yet. I suppose if worse comes to worse the Cubs could throw Ward out in right and shift Soriano to CF then.
  7. I think finding the Red Sox didn't "negotiate in good faith" would be hard to prove. Boras has a history of wanting outrageous sums for his clients and the Red Sox have already ponied up $51 million to negotiate. If the reports of offering $8 million for five years are true, the total impact on the Red Sox budget could be amortized at $12 per year. Financially, that seems like negotiating in good faith to me. They bid on an unknown product in the MLB and shouldn't be expected to shell out $16-$18 million per year above the posting fee simply because some agent says so. I don't understand why the player should be punished for the amount the Red Sox bid? If they bid 80 million does that mean he should sign for 5? IMO he should get at least 12.
  8. Pie hit .283 with a .341 OBP in Iowa last season. He was really mashing the ball the last month and a half or so. .310/.365/.548/.913 (126 AB) August .444/.500/.889/1.389 (18 AB) September I don't know if Pie is "ready," but he's pretty close. Pie was terrible during the Dominican Winter League. His line: .216/.263/.272/.535 It's a small sample (only 125 at-bats), but it's still pretty awful. In an ideal world I'd like to see him spend all of next year in AAA with a call-up in September. He can then have the CF spot in 2008 if he shows he's ready. I'm curious on how tired Pie was during the DWL. It's a long season to do that IMO.
  9. To me, it will be a miracle if Ronny Cedeno makes the club - he is awful, and the Cubs know it. DeRosa seems like the logical candidate with Theriot going to 2B as others have suggested. He needs to develop a plan on how to hit a pitcher and if he doesn't he'll be a 250/290 guy for the rest of his career.
  10. Signing him to be a full-time player would clearly be a bad idea. Signing him to be a part-time contributor and potential RHP killer could be a very smart gamble. What a difference a year makes. I wouldn't mind seeing Floyd get 250-400 AB's but what worries me is that he can't play right and if Soriano gets moved to CF who goes to RF if Jones is gone?
  11. I thought that Huff and Lou didn't get along in Tampa?
  12. I'm thrilled that he was healthy last year but I haven't seen the Cubs aquire a player that can play 3rd, unless Ward can. Who's out there that could give the Cubs 15 or so games at 3rd?
  13. I was going to say an old Bear QB that was good but I really couldn't even think of one. I didn't realize how poor they have been through the years.
  14. The first tree we ever cut ourselves had a a little visiter on it. The cats were looking at it all day and I couldn't figure out why until I found a little mouse on it. I put him outside but accidently let the cat out later and I found him dead (the mouse) on the porch. Later I found out that the mouse owed money to my cat for some cat nip and was trying to skip town. It wasn't a natural act, it was just business.

They aren't playing the Sisters of the Poor. Well then Majerus lied today. He stated that there first road game would be in the ACC. They are not very good this year, I could easily see them playing .500 in conference. The Gonzaga game is at MSG. Duke's first true road game is in Atlanta against Georgia Tech. Yep. Majerus is telling the truth. The only non-conference road game Duke has this season is in MSG vs. St. John's (an annual game). And since MSG is Cameron Indoor II..... Shhhh....don't tell Dickie V because he thinks Syracuse is the only team that does that.
  17. I don't blame Boras for the high posting fee and I don't see why Matsuzaka has to be responisble for Bostons bid. That was their choice to bid in the 50's not his. But I don't see how 5/40 isn't a fair offer for someone who can't negotiate with other teams and has never pitched a single major league inning. Personally I think it's too low and as 1908 said, he has a choice to stay in Japan and come out in 2 years so, he does have options and IMO Boston thought they could force him into a below market deal.

  19. Then if I were him I'd accept a 1 year 10 and go free agent after that or is he allowed to do that? Not unless Boston stipulates it in the contract. By MLB rules, he is Boston's property for 6 years if he signs a contract with them. They could stipulate that after the first contract (if less than 6 yrs) Boston would non-tender him, but Boston may feel that 1 year is too little to do with a 51 million dollar posting. Then he needs a big deal because he's 26 or so years old and I don't blame him for a second for trying to get 14 or more. In 5 years he'll be 31 and I don't think he'd get the big money then as he would now.

  21. Interesting. Yankees M.O. usually isn't to trade a marquee player for prospects. Big risk by KW here, as he's left with some serious holes on the team if he can't get something done by April. Of course, one would think that he wouldn't have pulled the trigger on these deals without something in the hopper I was thinking they'd add Crede too and take Pavano.
  22. I think he is. I don't understand why they didn't give him some time in CF last year.
