  1. you guys just don't get it! Neifi's been battin in the number 2 hole his whole career! You can't expect him to change so late in his career and get used to another spot in the order! The kids haven't established a spot in the order for themselves yet, so they can be bounced around and will be fine in any spot! You have to let Neifi get into his groove in the 2 spot... :-& ](*,)
  2. Hey, on the plus side, if the Brewers sweep the Cubs, Dusty can no long claim to be a winning manager with the Cubs! well, it's a plus side if you don't like Baker...
  3. you know how I said the Cubs would sweep.... I'm thinking more like losing 20-0. perhaps 20-1.
  4. The Cubs will Sweep the Sox. This will Earn Dusty a 5 year extension. We will proceed to lose the next 23 games. Dusty will still play all the crappy veterans claiming that we are not mathematically eliminated yet, so he can't start planning for next year. Hendry will make no moves, with the possible exception of trading away young guys for veterans to finish out year trying to spark the team to make it back to .500... Because that means we had a good year...
  5. It boggles the mind that the pirates could snap a 13 game losing streak, and still only be 3 behind the cubs... Ok, it doesn't boggle that much...
  6. Well, to be fair, no team should start retooling before the All star break. Granted, Dusty will never do that while he's the manager. The first step in any rebuilding is to get rid of him. However, we could always turn things around, go on a 12-15 game run, and be well... 5 games under .500... but if those games were all against the central, who knows where we'd be! Hey, is that BLUE kool-aid?
  7. Almost all sports writers (not Bruce, of course ;) ) seem to think fans don't have a clue what they're talking about. Every time I read one of those segments they seem condescending and sort of like "you just don't know what you're talking about..." while at the same time avoiding the actual question, and responding with a canned answer they had ready for a similar but much different question. Of course the Cubs fans would love to rebuild from scratch! If people started complaining about pocketing cash, they could... I don't know... LOWER TICKET PRICES?!?!?! The days of Wrigley being packed regardless of the team on the field are goign to end very rapidly if things don't change...
  8. Given the team's makeup from top to bottom, players, management all that good stuff... the only team this can really compare to since '98 is 2002. Baylor was worse than Baker. Yes, he really really was! He had a more coherant lineup, though, and the team was more fun to watch. That team quit playing, just as this team has quit playing. That year was saved by Baylor getting fired... made it almost worthwhile. Hopefully this year will be the same... but I'm not entirely convinced it will be...
  9. Does this take into account games played that he did not manage? i.e. suspended Hmm... no, but I've figured it twice, once when an article mentioned his Win/Loss as the manager, and once just now based on their record the last three seasons and this one... So either, they figured it the same way I did, or the Cubs are .500 in games he hasn't managed... I'll look into it... ETA: If the only suspension of Baker was the one game vs Arizona in 2004, after he swore... the Cubs won that one, so Baker has one less win as the manager than the total would suggest. If you want to get technical then, they only need to be 26 games under .500 this year, and Baker will have one fewer win than losses. However, most seem to ignore that suspension when listing his record as the Cubs Manager, so I'll just figure on wanting 27 under :)
  10. Hendry can't extend baker when they're 20 games under .500. He'll get destroyed in the media and by the fans. The Fans will stop coming... Well, then they can blame the fans not supporting them for the losses I gues...
  11. I want him to be 27 games under 500 before he gets fired... then he leaves the cubs with a losing record... which is what he deserves... they're at 19 now...
  12. It's good to know the bottom half of the order can hit for a bit of average... that's what you want, right?
  13. Well, I have something to root for again... 12 games further under .500 before Baker gets canned... assuming that happens... then Baker won't have a winning record managing the Cubs... which he doesn't deserve to have... Assuming he finishes out the season, that would mean a final record of 67 and 95... which at this point sounds about right...
  14. this team won't trim until Dusty is gone. His whole deal is being a "player's manager" that means all of "his boys" get plenty of playing time... even if the team is totally out of it and needs to see some young guys... Do you think a young guy would start over neifi at ANY point this year? young guys are for subbing in the late innings in blowouts... at least, that's how the management thinks...
  15. Is it just me, or in the Promo's for the Cubs/Indians games on WGN, did they show the Indians hitting bombs, and the Cubs bunting? I'm pretty sure that sums up the futility of the whole season right there...
  16. you mean he didn't already start his suspension? Boy am I out of the loop... I just assumed that was what was happening, or WOULD happen if there was another reason to sit him... I guess nothing is really that surprising...
  17. so, he wasn't hurt, but now he needs the DL?
  18. if the CUBS play .500 ball the rest of the year it will be a shocker...
  19. I think this is a good thing. There are several possabilities... 1. Dusty is being fired... WAY Awesome. (I skipped Hendry being fired, although that woudl be even better... just not going to happen). 2. MacPhail starting to dole out some blame and say changes might be necessary soon. Or, of course, the dreaded vote of confidence. This is OK, as it might actually mean something... but if they're just saying stuff and don't mean it... that leads us too... 3. Macphail puts blame on the typical excuses... injuries, bad luck, etc. This is both good and bad... good because then MACPHAIL is going to look like an idiot, and maybe he gets canned eventually too... bad because it means things will get much worse before they get better... Of course, it could be a very very bad thing... 4. Dusty Extended... "We need a stable presense to get us through this bad luck... etc."
  20. Agreed. Dusty and staff being extended would be absolute rock bottom for me. It's not so much that things couldn't get WORSE... I mean, things can pretty much always get worse... but if Dusty is extended... nothing worse that happens will actually FEEL worse... That's rock bottom... and we won't start coming back until he's fired...
  21. I know it's not going to happen... not as long as they make money... but if Hendry keeps locking in horrible players for large sums of money, and people stop caring about the team and learn they can drink beer without watching bad baseball... then the Trib won't want the team...
  22. What is this AL of which you speak ? AL is related to HAL from 2001. It's kind of the stupid brother computer that never gets anything right, but also doesn't kill people. I heard it simulated some games where there pitcher doesn't even BAT... this would seem to improve offenses, but doesn't always... especially if you replace the pitcher with guys like... I don't know... Blanco...
  23. Ok, this is mine, but obviously it's not necessary for things to get a lot better... Suppose the Trib sold the team to someone (anyone that knows how to win), they remove the entire front office of the team... EVERYONE... and the coaching staff, starting from scratch... Whoever the new GM is (I don't care as long as they value OBP), trades away the half to 3/4s of the team that sucks, or just releases them if we can't get anything for them... What would be left of the team? Not much... but we could rebuild a better one... I'm guessing we could contend again within 3 years... if we really got a team built almost from scratch with a new philosophy... Well, I can dream, can't I?
  24. You made it the National league, which makes sense, but how does that Z score compare in all of baseball since 1961? I mean true, worst ever in the national league is bad... but are there some really bad AL teams to compare it to?
  25. Dusty Extended... It will make me no longer care anything for the team for at least until he's fired...
