  1. Lee is worth more than just his production for one reason and one reason only. He would be automatically filled in the lineup card every day... taking one more decision out of the hands of Baker every day... that right there is worth 5-10 games... ;)
  2. You didn't know? If you don't like Dusty, it must be because you're a racist.
  3.  ](*,) :-({|=
  4. If Dusty makes it into the Hall of Fame, while Santo still hasn't made it... I'll consider the HOF even less important than I already do... if that's even possible...
  5. If you don't see it, you don't want to see it. I personally don't care. I think he uses other criteria to make his stupid baseball moves before this gets into his head, but it's in there. The only reason I would bring it up at all is that he brings up the race card when it suits him... and yet he says things like this... The fact that in today's articles he's downplaying the USA today article... makes me think a little better of him, and a lot less of the writer of said article.
  6. Dusty can be as racist as he wants to be. he's entitled to it. He just should then never be put in a position to make personel decisions, as he will discriminate against white players, which is against the law. And don't say you can be racist and that won't influence such decisions. It amazes me that peopel don't see his statements as racist. He says black and darker skinned players are more suited to the heat. He says this in the context of playing baseball in the heat. He makes no apologies for these statements, and in fact stands by them when questioned about them.
  7. What are you talking about? Who is getting fired? Someone above said that if Dusty was white, he would have been fired for those comments. There's a double standard we're talking about here. Dusty's Black, so he can't be racist. In fact, I do believe this was his exact response to the extremely brief questioning of his remarks. If a white manager said he prefered playign black players because they could take the heat better... he'd be out the door before the end of the press conference.
  8. If a white person should be fired for making certain comment, a black person should certainly be fired for making the same comments! Anythign else implies an inequality! And that's the definition of racism!
  9. it's not about what's "more" offensive. They're both offensive. And they both cause predjudice, and they're both based on a person's skin color. They're exactly the same.
  10. you don't say things like that on accident... not when you're a public figure... unless your horrendously stupid, or believe what you say is true, and therefore not questionable. ok, I'll grant you he may just be horrendously stupid.
  11. There need be no more evidence than what has already been discussed. It's not just a "regrettable comment." It's not just something he should have "kept to himself." He honestly believes black people are quicker and better in heat, and therefore better at baseball. If that's not blatantly racist then I don't know what is! Disregarding the fact that speed and ability to deal with the sun are WAY down the list of important factors for a baseball player...
  12. whether it enters into his decisions conciously or unconciously is irrelivant. The man is a racist. We have laws against job descrimination based on race. It's about as big a deal as you can get with racism. I would bet all baseball managers get death threats, and it has nothing to do with race... it has to do with baseball fanatics who probably never leave their basement for fear of missing a move in thier fantasy league... or people who write letters while drunk after their team loses. The implication of articles like this one, is that Dusty is a tragic hero... right up there with civil rights leaders who had to deal with death threats that were REAL, and directly because of their race. He suffers for his race, but keeps on plugging on because he has a job to do. And according to him, his job is to put the best players on the field... and according to him, those players are black. That is far worse to me than any threats he gets in letters from ignorant fans.
  13. Other than the comment about heat not having as much of an effect on black players, what else did he say? I just don't remember any other comments (though there may have been others). And let's not compare a death threat using a racial slur with a comment about some races not being as effected by heat as other races. His comment was associated with race, but he didn't indicate that he thought less of other races because they were effected more by hot weather. Not even the same ballpark, really. racism is racism. Certainly, death threats are way over any line... race doesn't really matter. But saying black players are better than white players because they can "take the heat" better, is as blatantly racist as you can get. And it's obvious he uses that mentality to make player decisions. so, to me, he has no right to claim hurt over racist remarks. Are they wrong? Absolutely! But he's just as bad, if not worse, as his racism directly impacts people's jobs and careers! threats and slurs are horrible, hurtful, and just wrong, but they're also just words...
  14. The thing that bugs me most about Dusty playing the race card... are his own blatantly racist comments, which the media still gives him a pass on... We're going to be paying for hiring Baker for a LONG time...
  15. Colin is an idiot when discussing Baseball... Basketball... Golf... well, pretty much everything but football. He's even an idiot a lot of the time talking about the NFL. He's pretty good talking about College football, though.
  16. "How to attend a Baseball Game in Southern California" 1. Buy 4 tickets through an overpriced ticket resale service. 2. Call up 3 buddies and arrange to all meet at the Stadium. 3. Drive separate cars. 4. Arrive no sooner than the 3rd inning, but no later than the 4th. 5. Attempt to start a wave each inning, or participate in one. 6. Leave no sooner than the 7th inning stretch, but no later than the 8th (to beat traffic) 7. Sit in traffic. You'll note, there was no mention of watching baseball...
  17. This is why the seats will still be packed for the next month. this little run has made people think there's a chance... and Dusty and company won't stop saying so to anyone who'll print what they say... We're doomed for more than this year, folks...
  18. All this means, of course, is that the team can play well, and motivates themselves against division rivals... but fails to even remotely care about the rest of the games they have... that's all on Dusty, folks...
  19. is it just me or do doubleheaders highlight the weaknesses of the manager? Lots of lineup decisions, you have to manage the bullpen for two games in a day? If our starters don't go deep... this could be quite the day...
  20. If the Cubs don't match the best offer he could possibly get... he'll be gone. They won't match that offer.
  21. Of course we have playoff chances! We just need to go on a run... 18-20 game win streak! With these guys, that's possible! And when Dusty says OBP is important, he means for each player's individual game, not for scoring runs. Each player will obviously be better with a higher OBP! That means, once those guys get hot, their OBP will go up, and that's good! It doesn't have any impact on run scoring though. Wait... I seem to have misplaced my brain... and I swore I wouldn't post without it anymore...
  22. Well, at least lots of people will know how big of a moron Hendry is... it's going as the biggest trade of the day... front page of yahoo... espn...
  23. if the choice was to 1) trade Maddux for Izturis, give the Dodgers $2M, take on the remainder of Izzy's contract 2) Keep Maddux until the end of the year 3) Trade Maddux for a mid-level prospect, pay them some cash and be done with it I'll choose #3, then I'd fall back on #2. That's because you have... you know... a brain...
  24. I'm pretty sure I can't be a cubs fan for a while. Probably will take a sale of the team before I'll think of coming back. don't know that I'll even pay attention to baseball any more... althoguh I kind of want to pull for the Dodgers (kills self)... at least their GM can make a deal... People in LA have been complaining about Izturas all year, because he sucks and is way overpaid... People in Chicago love Maddux and Walker... so naturally they should be the first on the trading blocks... oh, and they both don't SUCK.
