  1. no, the '03 club was not as good as they seem to appear now, just as you say. However, they did have the "magic" that makes a WS team special. They won close games, they came from behind, they hit game wining home runs in the bottom of the ninth. In every way that mattered, they did what it took to get to the World Series... until our shortstop couldn't keep his stupid glove down... The team really had the 3 pitchers needed to win in the postseason, and their 5 pitchers were good enough to get them there. last years team was better statistically, but (IMHO) Dusty tore that "magic" out of the heart of the team, played his stupid games that some players love and others can't handle, and lost us a bunch of games by stupid in game managing. This season is just a mess for all the same reasons, and he ran half the talent out of town so he could have "his" team. The '03 team should have been somethign that could have been built on... instead it was the peak and we haven't even reached the bottom of the valley...
  2. The Cubs also got Nomar, Wood, and Williamson. Nomar is only barely starting to find his swing again, which he hasn't had all year... Wood and williamson are out of the bullpen, which only helps you not lose games, they can't win anything for you...
  3. He's already on the hotseat... and if he's making statements that there is no way Dusty gets fired, then he is either being told to make them (for the ugly ugly PR war that will kill next years team), or he's getting fired the same day as Dusty, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later.
  4. The problem is that 3/4 isn't good enough. The Cubs need to play .800 ball in order to win the 93-95 games it's going to take to win the WC. I'm not sure if any team has ever maintained that level of play for that long of a stretch. The 1906 Cubs went 50-8 to end the season, a .862 winning %. On July 24th the Cubs were 61-28 at the end of the season they had 36 losses and had another 55 wins. that's an absurd comparison. You can make a legitimate case that the 1906 Cubs were the greatest baseball team in history (taking into account eras and all that stuff). Of course they would have been able to go on such a streak. the "unprecidented" part of what would be necessary this year, is a team playing less than .500 ball, suddenly turning it on and winning 33 of 44. It's not going to happen. Don't get me wrong... I love taking 3 of 4 from the Cards, and I was really glad to see Prior get the win last night, but it's just prolonging the inevitable. Dusty wants to be fired, just like he wanted to be fired in San Fran. It's only a matter of time... hopefully not another full year...
  5. That's just an absurd premise... Keep the terrible manager to build stability? Stability at being bad is not good stability. Sorry, no. Stability is great, but only with someone that has a clue how to manage a baseball game.
  6. what would a sweep of the Astros accomplish? Seriously... yeah, we'd only be 3.5 back of them, but we'd still be what, 6 back of Philly? Cubs will need to win about 18 of their next 20 to be back in this race...
  7. it's not going to happen people... the only thing this 3 of 4 did was extend the misery that is our manager... They might even win this series against the Astros... but don't kid yourself... Macias won the game for us last night... MACIAS. He's playing like Neifi did at the beginning of the year... and we know that won't last...
  8. decent bench players are not supposed to fill the number 1 and 2 spots in your order...
  9. I keep wanting to think we have a good chance to win this game... but then I remember how we find ways to lose... Of course, by winning today, we're doomed to loose a good bit the next few days... because the lineup won't change... and that's a bad thing...
  10. I actually had a dream that Dusty was fired last night. I can't really describe the joy it inspired. Kind of like when they got rid of Baylor, but so much more...
  11. Of course it will, it will improve the team now, and for next year. How is that not doing anything?
  12. fan support for the CUBS won't die, but support for this team and this manager can die. And I think it's already goign to start dying for next year. Dusty has lost all respect in the eyes of most fans. There's really nothing he can do to get it back. To me, that means he should be out the door no matter HOW much it costs...
  13. Sorry, got distracted.... he was saying that because the Cubs gave up 7 runs in one inning, their offense couldn't hope to do anything... you know, because the terrible pitcher was now a "relaxed" pitcher... No one can hit against a "relaxed" pitcher... didn't you know...
  14. Me too... I guess my point is, I wasn't really going to be surprised until Sept 1... but now, I think we've reached the point where it's really amazing if it doesn't happen...
  15. past acceptance it IS funny, but it's also still depressing... the ending for this season stops at acceptance, but it's already depressing for next year...
  16. I honestly can't believe what I'm hearing from Dusty right now...
  17. It's absurd. The comment didn't have anythign whatsoever to do with Race. It's taken totally out of context and blown WAY out of proportion. If anything he was adding in a comment that Alou has his "favorite players" just like Dusty does... be they carribiean, black, or just "his boys." It's bad baseball, racist on their part, and they should be held accountable.
  18. It's good that Wood's hurt shoulder is useful to clean up these important innings...
  19. Until now, I've been thinking the critical date is Sept 1, when the kids come up. No, I'm not talking about the playoffs this year, I'm talking about next year. My thought was that when they finally admit the towel needs to be tossed in, and the kids are going to play, then Dusty HAD to go, or next year was a loss too... I now think that date that Dusty has to go to even have a chance next year is NOW, today, before playing the Cardinals. The team is dying and the fan support is dying. It has been for a long time. However, if we go into the next four games and lose even 3 of them, it's going to take at least a year to recover, and Dusty can't do it. Hendry needs to call a press conference this evening and get rid of him. Clean house, start over, and start rebuilding. If he doesn't, we will have to look to '07, and probably won't have a championship caliber team for several years, and it will be the next generation of pitchers... so much for Prior, Wood, and Zambrano...
  20. This team will not make the playoffs if Dusty Baker is the manager past today. There is simply no way. If he is fired, then I will open up to the possibility that they could turn things around. I don't see it happening, though.
  21. Do you think the Brewers are still in it? My gut response to that question is... No, obviously not. I think that gut response is correct. The Brewers are ahead of the Cubs. QED.
  22. Tomorrow's lineup: 1. Lawton LF 2. Neifi SS (can't play Nomar 3 in a row) 3. Lee 1B 4. Burnitz RF 5. Walker 2B 6. Macias 3B (he's hitting almost .300!) 7. Barret C 8. Patterson CF we might score 2 runs, solo home runs by Walker and Barret.
  23. Maybe Ramirez as well. Although right now I'm not so sure. exactly...
  24. I've reached the point all I care to see back are Lee, Prior, and Z... although if they shelved Wood now and he really was healthy by the beginning of next year, I'd like to see him play well again...
