    You think they'd rather have Hunter than Matthews? Matthews may be leaving as a FA. I know he's a FA, but do you think he's going to get $12M? The Rangers loved GMJ this year, and I think he'll come cheaper than Hunter. I know the talk about this year being an anomoly for Matthews, but he was pretty consistent all year long, and nobody knows that better than the Rangers. I expect them to bring him back.

    I didn't list that because I'm pretty sure that was last year's roster (given they have a recap of what each player did in 2004-2005). I also saw this, which indicates the news about Blanco, at least, is current.

    No, we are using statistical evidence to back up our argument, and mg420 is simply saying "no". There's a large difference there. of course every one knows that statistics are the only thing that really matter in baseball and there is no way to interpret them to your advantage. all hail the mighty numbers! Reminding again what those numbers were: This year no pitcher in baseball with 200+ innings is within shouting distance of those BAA and SLG numbers. Do you have any idea how outrageous they are? What more would you want in a great performance by a pitcher? A few less walks might have been nice, but a pitcher with those BAA and SLG numbers doesn't have to be afraid of a few walks.

    So Dusty doesn't have a monopoly on talking about movable parts. :D I don't have time to look it up but I remember last year Orel Hershiser using the "moving parts" description to describe the now Padre Chris Young [ERA 3.46]'s mechanics. Maybe it takes an Ivy League education to figure out how to control those moving parts.

    you're not serious are you? the A's were down two in the bottom of the ninth . . . pretty self explanatory, isn't it? Yeah it's pretty self explanatory. Not giving credit to a guy who did his job is crazy. If you're going to make a out, make it productive. That is exactly what Dan Johnson did. I would rather have Dan Johnson bringing home that run on a sac fly, rather than not bringing home that run at all. As a fan of productive outs, that runner at 3rd base versus that runner at home down by 2 in the ninth makes absolutely no difference at all-Johnson's job is to get on base there, not trade an out for a run that doesn't matter in that context (another hit is needed to score a run anyway-and that hit would have brought the runner home). If they had been down by only 1, Johnson's out would have been incredibly important. If it had been the 8th inning down by 2, then it's an ok out to make to trade for the run, although not ideal. In the 9th down by 2 though, hitting a sac fly is not a batter's job. And if his teammates gave him high 5's for a sac fly in that situation, that's more proof that there's a shortage of rocket scientists in the dugout.

    Where'd you get the numbers? That's good stuff. I did the calculations myself from here and I'm not sure I did them in the same way as those used in your BABIP formula - it's LD's as a percentage of all hit balls - AB - K.

    I thought of that, but that's why I looked at the whole league for a comparison. I did hear of one stadium a year or two back where the batter's eye was slightly off-center in such a way to disadvantage right handed hitters against left-handed batters.

    I was looking at the batting splits for one of my favorite Daytona Cubs and noticed that the bulk of his difference in home / road splits came not from HR's or BABIP, but primarily from difference in his BB and K rates. I looked at the splits for the team as a whole and found the same result, so I looked at the FSL as whole and found the following: K / BB Home 5131 / 2452 2.09 Road 5712 / 2298 2.49 It makes me suspicious that, particularly when they were using non-union umpires, the home team was getting the benefit of the doubt. I think the impact would be greater on control pitchers and disciplined hitters. On the hitter I was looking at, his overall isoD is .099, but it's .111 at home and .087 on the road. Using BB/PA that's .153 at home and .112. K/PA was .167 at home and .248 on the road. Can anyone think of other reasons for big home / road splits on K's and BB's?
