  1. If we wanted to get an Ivy Leaguer, why didn't we get one who actually graduated? http://chrisyounginjapan.mlblogs.com/photos/uncategorized/cyjapan.jpg[/b]
  2. Sounds like I've got DH in my future then - do I have to hit or just gain weight?
  3. Reserved for when he misses out on all the non-cub FAs. More like when he misses out on any of the non-Cub FA's.
  4. Here's a hypothetical. Suppose Hendry thinks ARam and his agents have seriously over-estimated his value in the FA market, both now and last year. If ARam thinks he can get 5/90 but Hendry thinks the market will go no higher than 4/60, no deal will ever get done until he actually gets to test the market. In that situation it's probably not in Hendry's best interests to really try and knock his value in negotiations, but rather to make what he considers a fair and generous offer but leave the door open for further negotiations after other offers have been received.
  5. The delay could also be PR. They might want it to appear they're struggling with decision to appease a fan base upset at losing their star player. Even if they're dancing and high-fiving behind closed doors, they want their fans to think they're torn.
  6. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him 4/$56 ish type contract, with an opt-out after 2 years. It's potential that in 2 years we won't be on the hook for his deal (which he may or may not live up to). A better way to think of the contract you described (or the one Ramirez signed) is it's a 2 year contract with a 2 year player option. And, generally, the player will only exercise the option to stay when, using your term, he hasn't "lived up to" expectations.
  7. Don't forget Milton Bradley. Could we put it on pay per view?
  8. So the take-it-or-leave-it approach says Hendry offers something, say 5/70, ARam says no thanks, I'll test the market. Upon testing the market, suppose the best offer he gets is 5/65. Hendry then says "ha ha I told you so" and lets him go to another team for less than he was willing to pay one week earlier. That would be true genius.
  9. What leverage does he have now? The only leverage Hendry has is the threat that he'll withdraw his offer. I'll admit, it's weak leverage considering Hendry's position, but you can't let the negotiations go on forever while other potential candidates are signed by other teams. After Saturday Ramirez becomes an auction process. Well, if you were Aram's agent, what would you advise him to do?
  10. If we can't win a bidding war to keep ARam then we don't deserve him.
  11. Will you be willing to overpay for a CFO?
  12. That's correct, and it's Matsuzaka that chose Boras. I think Boras's modus operandi is well known, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that he will play hardball in negotiating the contract.
  13. If the Cubs are willing to match any offer he gets from the open market I think ARam will return. I will be very surprised if he takes an offer from another team for less money than the Cubs are offering. If the Cubs are unwilling to pony up the market price that's their way of saying they don't want him back.
  14. Had me until that part. it gives millions of minorities and women chances that they would not have had otherwise. it won't be necessary forever, but it's still necessary. we're less than a generation removed from the civil rights amendment, remember. racism exists in the workplace, it must be forced out by any and all means. Please stop there. AA is good, but is also bad. I tried to leave it at a quick snippet of my experience. Don't make me go further by defending it without acknowledging it's problems. Does Affirmative Action include HR only forwarding resumes of minority candidates? I've decided that all the white males must have great jobs because I've never seen a resume for one looking for a job.
  15. If the Cubs don't want to pay market price for his services who's being greedy?
  16. I thought it was George Gervin.
  17. Actually, research from game theory has shown that a slight modification to the sealed bidding rules results in "better" outcomes. The auction goes to the highest bidder, but the price paid is the second highest bid. This eliminates the issue of participants worrying about "bidding against themselves." Under these rules, there is no incentive to bid more or less than the maximum value you are willing to pay.
  18. Alternatively, we'll see how much the Cubs want him to stay in Chicago. If the Cubs won't match any offer he can get on the open market, especially after they've proclaimed their willingness to increase payroll, then we'll know the Cubs really don't want him. If ARam takes a lower contract to play for someone else then I'll blame him.
  19. Hendry can always offer another 4 or 5 year deal with the right to opt out after 2 years and we'll be right here again 2 years from now. Who didn't see this coming 2 years ago?
  20. Welcome to the club. 8-) Hey, I'm in, too. Not only that, but also a small Texas college no less. Hrm, well, I don't think UCLA is a small Texas college. :) Amusingly enough, two of my cousins are math-econ majors too. Well, when I was in grad school we thought of UCLA as part of the farm system :) And my daughter was Econ/Psych, but she got a masters in Math so I guess that's OK.

  22. Well, some of us old guys know a thing or two about statistics - heck, I can even work one of these newfangled computer thingys. Old isn't necessarily bad. I didn't necessarily say it was. I was just thinking since options look to be drying up, and Lou is an old-timer, I'm guessing we get somebody who has worked with him in the past, possibly Elia. I know you didn't make the direct inference, but you know, sometimes those old folks get a touch sensitive. :hmph:
