  1. FIRE AND INTENSITY!!!
  2. i don't think it should be a 'don't spend this year, spend next year instead' sort of thing. it should be a matter of making a plan that spans a five to seven year period where contracts are set to come and go while eying talent in the mean time to fill holes, so if a rotation spot opens because kerry wood is moving to the pen, maybe we pick up lilly, maybe not. maybe we pick up soriano, if he and that contract fits into that plan(whether or not he does is not important). and then filling in the other spots with farm system guys where and when we can. this is the problem with the cubs current administration, recognizing talent and how it fits into our idea of what the team will be, rather than making up for mistakes on the run to save jobs. if the first is done properly the second is unnecessary, which is why hendry should not be our clubs general manager.
  3. how does st louis get kip wells at one year/three mil, and the cubs get marquis for this? astounding.
  4. Seriously, who uses those sort of arguments to criticize Hendry's offseason? Disgruntled Cubs Fan for one. There are plenty of other village idiots that chime in with that nonsense whenever they see a move they don't like. It's getting old. and what do you call this post, exactly?
  5. And what quality arms did you want? Schmidt didn't take a competitive offer from the Cards, the WS champions. What makes you think he would have come to the Cubs? We weren't even a finalist for his services. He wanted to stay on the west coast. snip three/four years at 10-11.5 mil/per is not that competitive.
  6. For a ex-decent prospect? Jones has more value than that. I know if I were the GM I would try to get the best available player for Jones. I wouldn't trade Jacque to trade Jacque. Lofton SHOULD NOT be considered an every day player. And no way in hell would I pay him 6 million. If he is willing to take 2 million then I would consider it. Hendry didn't help out Jones' value by saying he would be open to trading Jones to any other team. Im sure Hendry did not say those exact words. Jones for David Newhan? Thats a complete joke. I rather keep Jones than get that bum Newhan on the team. newhan was who i was talking about. and if you don't think hendry would do it, just remember patterson among others.
  7. sign marquis trade jacque for an ex-decent prospect that is too old to amount to anything other than a back up utility man sign lofton thats it, your 007 cubs. thanks jim :?
  8. i want dick pole!
  9. should and will are to way different things with the cubs.
  10. a sum of nasty pitches or some nasty pitches ?
  11. what does angioplasty have to do with transactions?
  12. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/24/AR2005062401922.html maybe i'm missing something, but what does flu like symptoms have to do with not wanting on the cubs? i know he may have some clubhouse cancer-esque traits, but who cares. give me the best players and when they start to win everyone will get along. edit: bowden is still an moran
  13. if dotel can get back to where he was at while in houston you may be wrong.
  14. and get on base 45% of time. bonds is still a great hitter, and he's not as bad as people make him out on defense. he's much more likely to be worth 16 million dollars during his contract than soriano is to be in any season during his. and the winner is...
  15. well the word 'good' rules out floyd
  16. iirc hendry said prior would start the year as the 'sixth starter' Yeah, I agree that he shouldn't be relied on. But we currently have 4 major league starters, with a plethora of young arms and Mark Prior all vying for the 5th spot in the rotation. Say Hendry signs another arm and Prior reports to ST in great shape, what does he do? Zambrano's obviously not going anywhere. He'll have Lilly and another expensive arm. They aren't going to the pen. Miller is probably all set in the rotation. So that leaves Hill. Does Hill get pushed to long relief? To Iowa? Traded? I just don't think it's smart to invest another 10 million dollars into the rotation. i was under the impression that miller would move to the bullpen. he would probably be very effective as a set up guy for wood.
  17. can't we just sign glenallen?
  18. iirc hendry said prior would start the year as the 'sixth starter'
  19. well so is what i'm drinking from, but that was purchased at the dollar store.
  20. Cool, but how is he at pitching? ;) I dunno. I like Suppan, especially if he's going to sign for fewer years and less cash, but we would still need another similar-to-better pitcher to be serious about next year. That's where Penny comes in. Add Church for CF, and I really like this team. that's it right there.
  21. are these all just rumors or have there been actual discussion? i see it posted all over the place, and he would probably fare well in wrigley, but haven't really seen much on other 'news' sites.
  22. Some people need a scapegoat for every situation. The GMs job is to acquire good players for the team. It's not scapegoating to complain when your GM doesn't acquire good players for the team. It *is* scapegoating when the offseason is not yet over and we don't know just how open Schmidt was to leaving the west coast. Blaming the GM in a vacuum is the very definition of scapegoating. if you want most people to pat his ass for the job he's done so far you will wind up sorely disappointed here.
  23. Am I the only one who is totally opposed to the idea of having Penny here? He starting out really good last year but was mediocre at best down the stretch. I've seen him pitch and to be honest I'm not impressed. groundball pitcher in wrigley. plus i think he only has two years left on his contract, which is TONS better than four of lilly/meche
  24. Prior will bounce back in 07. will bounce back onto the DL... If he ever gets out of the DL first. you my friend make an EXCELLENT point....good form, sir...good form maybe too good of form... so good he will soon be on the dl as well
  25. hendry gets desperate and trades too much for Westbrook, Jennings, or Penny. i'd rather have either of those three over meche/lilly Depends on what we give up. I'd rather give up money for Lilly than players for Westbrook or Jennings. I like Penny a lot, but I think he is going to demand too much in return. We don't really match up with the Dodgers either. They don't need OF help, which is what we can provide with Jones. the money hendry is about to spend on lilly is just as pricey as a prospect/whatever package for penny when talent is taken account of. I don't think either Westbrook or Jennings -- especially Jennings -- is much more talented than Lilly. I don't have an issue with spending money at this point. It's not like signing Lilly blocks us this year. It doesn't really hurt us down the road so long as we still have money. lilly is a glorified estes, they compare pretty fairly with age in consideration.
