  1. The fact that these things are mostly obvious is what makes it so criminal that we've had to wait so long for management that understands them. But Epstein seems to love to play things close to the vest. Anything he's saying to the press is something he considers so obvious as to be essentially meaningless.
  2. Regardless of the fact that you probably can't, it still doesn't make any sense to pay $8-10m for him to play somewhere else. If you could, then it would.
  3. why? Why to what, exactly? Why would you pay $8-10m for him to go away with nothing in return? What you get in return is the freedom from having to pay the remainder of his contract. Zambrano represents an $15 million debt to the Cubs in the upcoming season. Paying $8-10 million to relieve that debt leaves you with $8-10 million to try to find a better player.
  4. "There's a good hitter batting behind this guy, should we try to get him out or maybe do something else?"
  5. I don't think they are incompatible, other than something stupid like a fractional run expectancy difference on sac bunts.
  6. Made of the same material as jeans and only slightly longer than regular shorts? Does that count?
  7. It does disappoint me that we wasted 20 years twiddling our thumbs, because the inefficiencies get smaller every year as teams get smarter. I'm just expecting Epstein and Friends to find small inefficiencies and mostly just bludgeon the NL Central with our financial resources.
  8. Speaking as one of the cool kids, I'd like to welcome you to the board, Conky.
  9. Again said the Cubs' aggressive 2011 draft philosophy caught his attention and helped him believe it might be a good fit.
  10. Thus Sayeth His Majesty: http://www.bleachernation.com/2011/10/26/many-more-quotes-and-thoughts-from-the-theo-epstein-media-tour/
  11. Exactly how many times are you imagining the Cubs fed this "addiction"? $30 million a year on international signings would mean giving every kid on Hispanola a few hundred thou, whether they can play baseball or not. There is a diminishing return on this stuff.
  12. I would not agree there is a lot to fix. They need one or two rotation pitchers and a huge middle-of-the-order bat.
  13. The 2014 Cubs will need a first baseman and a middle-of-the-order bat, too. To the anti-Pujols/Fielder people, how do you plan on filling those holes? I can't wait until we have something to talk about besides the 10 millionth variation of "Should we or shouldn't we give a big contract to an elite 1bman?" in every thread.
  14. I could see it being fairly quiet if Hoy-stein just wants to keep financial flexibility. All the contracts coming off the books, they may be hoping for ideal trade targets in the next few years rather than free agents.
  15. I don't know what he meant by a "Castro coach," but if you believe proper coaching can help young players develop, which apparently Epstein does, then helping Castro in the natural but not inevitable transition from young toolsy SS to reliable SS would be a pretty important task for the organization.
  16. It's awesome that they think that ruthlessly, but I would have liked a payroll number :(
  17. Well silly us, that's obviously public knowledge and we must be ignorant for not knowing. It was a pretty big deal in the sports news world a few years ago, but I wouldn't have remembered it was her specifically until someone else brought it up.
  18. how does cc feel about that?
  19. he's gone Officially? No. Theo "looks forward to sitting down with him and exchanging ideas about the future of the organization" or something like that.
  20. Chicago media - if Theo pretends like he didn't hear your question, then it's a stupid question and he's generously giving you a second chance. Also, we have a Starbucks confirmation! Long live Purple Shirt Dude!
  21. Absolutely. You're welcome.
  22. "Every season is a chance to win, and every chance to win is sacred." talking about "parallel fronts" in building the foundation *and* going for 2012. *fapfapfapfapfap*
  23. Really good question by Phil Rogers.
  24. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wrighda03.shtml Besides last season what should I be worried about here? The '09 with 10 HRs? It also came with a .300+ BA and a .390 OBP, plus it's hard to believe he's a 10 HR guy in Wrigley anyway. That .390 OBP came with a .394 BABIP. He couldn't and didn't keep that up. UZR also has him as brutal three years running. If he were super cheap I might consider him an interesting flyer, but I wouldn't pay anything for him in money or talent.
