I, of course and as always, could be very wrong, but my guess is that all this means the Cubs will not be major players for Fielder or Pujols. It just doesn't seem like the Epstein/Moyer style to do that sort of deal so shortly after taking over. I keep coming back to the due diligence the Red Sox did on Crawford, hiring a PI to follow him months before he became a free agent. Epstein may have had some time to think about the Cubs, but it can't have been that much time. My guess is that their immediate offseason focus is pitching. Trying to make two or three viable MLB starters appear in one offseason is no easy task and may take up most of the available resources.
