Hmm. I wonder if that trip to Chicago recently was legit routine or if there was something up even then. You just can't count on sore-armed pitchers. Edit: Sullivan's tweet phrases it "May begin rehab in 6 weeks." which might imply that there is a rehab process before he even begins a normal throwing process.

Michael Wacha is getting a start for the Cardinals this week, less than a year after being drafted 19th overall. He has a 2.05 ERA at AAA this year, but it's a total mirage, with a .197 BABIP, 86% strand rate and 5.8 K/9. I expect MLB hitters to treat him badly.

What kind of information are you referring to? Health? If he's for real at the major league level? The latter is pretty much answered for me... Health and effectiveness. He's a starting pitcher. They get hurt or wear out their arms to ineffectiveness at a fairly high rate. I see no reason to lock ourselves into his age 31-3? seasons two and a half years before they even begin.

I would rather wait to make the decision on whether or not to extend a high-risk asset until we have the most information possible, even if it means risking paying more for it or being priced out of extending it at all.

Just as good or better of a chance he prices himself into someone giving him a 6-7 year deal on FA market at max prices as him regressing. We can afford to risk it and pay him that if it comes to it.

I have very little interest in extending a 30-year-old pitcher coming off three consecutive years with DL trips, two of them from elbow problems.

Garza's contract expires at the end of the year. You are "freeing" yourself of him whether you trade him or not.

I don't think we had the money to go after those options. We chose to focus our money on pitching.

If Brett Jackson looks remotely ready, I say trade DeJesus. Again, it depends in the plan for 2014. If they don't plan on some big additions, trade DeJesus and audition Jackson and maybe Szczur. Brett Jackson is hitting 246/331/390 (with a .342 BABIP) and a 27.6% K rate in his third AAA stint. His ability to have any influence on the Cubs' long-term plans is over.

I'd just as soon keep DeJesus and focus the money elsewhere. Or wait until you actually have one of those big FA outfielders signed before you move DeJesus or Soriano. But I won't pitch a fit if they trade one at the deadline.
