  1. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/standings/ Third-order Wins now have the Cubs as the 4th-best team in the NL.
  2. I'm not ready to regret missing out on Brown just yet. All his peripherals are the same except for he's suddenly almost tripled his HR/FB%. Maybe that's legit, maybe not.
  3. Fascinating. The synergy there is amazingly brilliant. It's basically the flip-side of their "look for high pitches you can drive" offensive philosophy, which also appears to be paying dividends.
  4. Why do some people not understand that MiLB pitchers sometimes develop secondary offerings instead of dominating with refined pitches? Treating AAA games like spring training is the secret. I'm intrigued.
  5. Not to discourage the amusingly odd defensiveness from Cardinals fans about Wacha, you do realize that I wasn't saying he was a bad prospect with no hope of a future, right?
  6. Where did some people get the idea that nine starts isn't a lot for K-rate?
  7. Maybe Memphis was just too hard for him and he had to step down to face a lower level of competition?
  8. Hahaha. The Royals broke Rany Jazayerli: http://www.ranyontheroyals.com/2013/05/how-hell-did-this-happen.html
  9. My problem is that I just feel like it's wrong to firesale on a team that is .500 or better, even if they are a dozen games out of a playoff spot. I can't come up with a great reason. The best I've got is something vague about "winning culture" and respect for your players, or maybe attractiveness to free agents (I think our record hurt us with Sanchez and Grilli this year).
  10. I know I'm pounding the optimism very hard, but I think an interesting question is in what scenarios do you not do a firesale? How late do you wait? What would the line be? Based on record, games back, number of teams in front of you?
  11. Cubs are No. 6 in the NL in runs/game. I'm pretty sure they are now first in the NL in ISO.
  12. Cubs have passed Arizona for 6th in the NL in runs/game.
  13. This is probably fair after Garza got away with a ton of line drives and deep fly balls earlier in the game.
  14. If some of the statistical indicators are right and we get some luck, we could blow past it. (or we could just blow, you never know).
  15. All I asked from this team going in to the season was to keep me interested until the draft and then the deadline, and they've basically done that. Though that wasn't a high hurdle because it's easy to delude myself when it comes to the Cubs.
  16. stop massaging your nerdy numbers to suggest that this is anything but a really bad team Platoons are so awesome. 27 games in June, 14 are against teams with a worse RD than us. Assuming no epic collapse today, we just need to outperform by three wins to go 17-10 and be .500 heading into July.
  17. I haven't added it up, but I think the Cubs might have passed Atlanta for the NL lead in ISO.
  18. The worst part is that in the back of my mind, I'm thinking about the long-term wild card implications of beating the Diamondbacks.
  19. We've finally got that sequencing thing down. Before yesterday, I think I heard them say we only had like 2 home runs with more than one on base.
  20. Love the bat flip/stare on a ball that just barely makes the basket with the wind blowing out. Perfect.
  21. Wouldn't that also make it more attractive for other teams to blow the limits, making our big pool less advantageous.
  22. The combination of feeling really good about the statistical indicators and playing the Diamondbacks is bringing back bad memories.
  23. Infield single, followed by a pickoff attempt that got away (didn't look like a terrible throw) Sac bunt attempt, Gray tries to get the runner going to third, would have been out but third baseman dropped the ball In the rest of the inning, there was one solid hit and one attempted squeeze bunt where they went for the runner at the plate and didnt' get him. He looks pretty hittable though. Fastball very straight and frequently up and out over the plate. A lot of 94, 95. In the second inning, he gave up a single, a deep fly ball out, and then a double over the right fielder's head before getting out of it.
