  1. Fun fact for the day: WilliSC48's arithmetic skills stink. Looks like you got me there. But if you look at career totals, his OBP comes in at a whopping .325. Just what we need from our leadoff hitter. And it sounds like our 2nd hitter will either be DeRosa (career .330 OBP) or Izturis (career .295 OBP). Not really lighting the bases on fire. Our biggest problems last year were our pitching staff and our inability to get on base. I don't see how Hendry has fixed either problem.
  2. I don't have any problem with Pie in CF, but adding his bat to this lineup doesn't make it any better. The only two people on this team who take walks are Lee and Murton, and if they add Floyd they'll be taking away at-bats from Murton. We'll still be the same team we were last year where we don't know how to get on base. Hard to score runs if you don't get on base. Fun stat for the day: Soriano's OBP last year if you take out all of his intentional walks was a meager .316. He's not going to get all those intentional walks with Lee and Ramirez behind him. Where are the guys who are actually going to get on base in front of Lee and Ramirez?
  3. I'm sure it's been said before, but is anyone else deathly afraid that Gary Hughes is Hendry's right-hand-man? What does that say about this organization? :x
  4. I certainly hope this isn't the case. As others have said, with Pie and Izturis in the lineup together we have 3 potential black holes in our lineup with the pitcher included. It gets even worse on days when Blanco is in there. Hendry has marginally upgraded the pitching and hasn't done anything to address the OBP problems from last year. While the addition of Soriano helps our homerun stats, he'll be hitting in the lead-off spot where his homeruns won't matter nearly as much since there won't be people on base for him to drive in. He should be batting in the 5th spot, but that's a whole other story. With all the talk of winning a World Series, Hendry hasn't done much to help our chances of getting there. Sure we'll probably be a better team that we were last year, but that's not saying much. I sincerely hope that Hendry has more to do (and I'm not talking about adding Floyd as our "big LH bat").
  5. You could go the other way with the pitching staff as well. Hill could pitch like a rookie and be very inconsistent. Prior and Miller could be on the DL all year. Lilly and Marquis could be what they were last year, or worse. Tons of if's in the rotation.
  6. This was buried in one of the Marquis articles today: I think it's a given at this point that Floyd will be on the team next year. He's from Chicago and Hendry has a mancrush on the guy. I'm still wondering what Hendry has up his sleeve because even with a Floyd addition I don't think this team is strong enough to compete for a World Series.
  7. The news just keeps getting better and better. :x I can't even fathom what went through Hendry's head to make him dish out $28 million over 3 years for Marquis.
  8. Not enough to win the World Series...
  9. Someone should email mlbtraderumors.com. They'll have the rumor up on the site in no time. I'd like to say I'm not a fan of trading Hill. he showed way too much potential last year to trade him away. Just look at what pitchers are getting in this market right now. He's too valuable to trade off unless he nets us a Cabrera type.
  10. It's a given that Jocketty will do something that will help to improve the Cards. I'm less worried about the Astros. I think they have a lot of holes to fill and not a ton out there to fill it with. Brewers are going to be better this year if they can keep their guys healthy. All in all, it's a long way until spring training and a lot can change.
  11. I think most of us are wondering why sign a #4 or #5 type when we needed a #2 type.
  12. He better be getting us Dunn or A-Rod, because with this rotation we're going to need a lot of offense.
  13. 3 years? I don't understand this at all. Are we done getting pitchers now then? If we are, then I'm definitely disappointed in what Hendry has done. We have Z, the potential in Hill, and then a bunch of 5th starters.
  14. Keep going. Not nearly enough.
  15. I'm glad I'm not an Orioles' fan...
  16. It's like some sports writers don't even try. What, is Ward going to play CF for us? There's no chance he's a starter if Jones gets traded. Do some homework Mr. van Dyck. Geez.
  17. If that's the best we can get Hendry better be on the phone calling Jones and telling him to suck it up and expect to play CF in Wrigley Field next year.
  18. Is Marquis really worth the money though? Don't we already have cheaper versions in-house, and shouldn't we be looking for a starting pitcher who slots a little higher in the pitching rotation? Just seems like a waste of time to me. Marquis is never going to be better than a #4 pitcher, at best, and we already have enough #4 and #5 pitchers on this team. It's a non-young guy, non-health risk pitcher we can reliably throw out there if nobody else pans out in ST. If others prove ready to perform, we can either DFA or trade him if he's signed to the right contract. If he's not willing to sign that type of contract, I'm not interested. I'm just worried Hendry is going to give him a guaranteed contract that's worth a couple million more than we'd all hope for. Someone is going to give him a decent contract next year with there not being much on the market, and I'm just hoping it's not us.
  19. Is Marquis really worth the time though? Don't we already have cheaper versions in-house, and shouldn't we be looking for a starting pitcher who slots a little higher in the pitching rotation? Just seems like a waste of time to me. Marquis is never going to be better than a #4 pitcher, at best, and we already have enough #4 and #5 pitchers on this team.
  20. Mac, Jurko, and Harry on ESPN 1000 just reported Tommie Harris might miss the rest of the season with a "serious hamstring injury". Sort of conflicting from what we've heard a couple days ago. They also said Harris was going to Dallas to see a specialist about the hamstring.
  21. Funny how people's perceptions of a player change year by year. I guarantee you after last offseason, most people would have preferred Marquis over Suppan, and just about everyone would have liked Marquis more than Jennings. A word of caution about judging a guy on one year.... We'll post these stats again for your benefit. That says to me that he's had 3 horrible seasons mixed in with 3 average seasons the past 6 years. We're not judging him on one year. We're judging him on the past 6 years of mediocrity or much worse.
  22. Haha. Wow. What an intelligent post backed up with great info.
  23. 5 years? WTH! If this deal is actually 5 years, then it has to be over $50 million. If so, :hammer:
