  1. It's 9-1, bottom of the 6th? http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=280530116 Just gonna throw this out there...
  2. Kidding, right? Affliction shirts.
  3. I don't remember where I heard this, but I wanna say that the Cubs' 40-year post-season drought had a lot to do with the fact that they were just as bad about getting a farm system as they were about getting lights put onto their stadium. Most other teams had a fully developed farm system by the 40's, and the Cubs had only just started implementing one. The resulting post-season gap was due in part to that lack of farm system and in part to the fact that the people making the other decisions regarding the big league team were the same guys. Once the Cubs caught up, there were enough teams in the league that the amount of success the Cubs have enjoyed since 1984 is actually half-decent. Like I said, that needs some fact-checking, but if you wanna stop getting weird looks about your explanation for a lack of success, this may be a better route.
  4. On the bright side, you won't have to listen to him until the fifth inning.
  5. The Cubs won 2 out of 3. The Padres still won 1 out of 3, which is just as good.
  6. My Pavlovian response to seeing this name in a game thread was instant blind rage.
  7. Fukudome's wife is having a baby. with a Cincinatti loss and a Chicago win, Cubs can be tied for the Division lead. On the glass-half-empty side, the Cubs are also in striking distance of fifth place. On the glass-is-still-brand-new side, the season is 2 weeks old. The glass can be knocked off the shelf and broken, rendering it useless and unwatchable--I mean, undrinkfromable--at any point in its six-month life-expectancy, making it an impractical purchase (if not complete waste of money and cabinet space) in the first place. What are we talking about again?
  8. I thought of this thread when watching bot 9th between the Jays and Yanks tonight. Rivera had just blown his first save of the season. Bases juiced for Patterson, 1 out. Rothschild comes out of the dugout to talk to Rivera. Patterson promptly swings and misses at 2 consecutive eye-level fastballs. On the 3rd fastball, he starts swinging, but it becomes a defensive swing once he realizes the fastball is en route directly to his face. Ground ball to the 3rd base bag results in a 5-3 double play, Rivera out of the jam. (Jays still won in 10.) Rothschild watched Dusty ruin Corey, so he knew exactly what to do there.

  10. Instead of the magical "bad calls even out in the end" rule, I think it's worth considering that, when every team gets 27 outs instead of the game being played on a clock, and when there are 162 games (approx 4374 outs) in a season, the impact of any one play in terms of an entire season is severely insignificant. Add to this insignificance that questionable calls go in all directions over the course of the season, and replay turns out to be pretty inconsequential. Even considering that, however, using instant replay during the season is worthwhile because it keeps the process in practice for when playoffs roll around, and during the playoffs, anything outside of balls/strikes should be fair game.
  11. I only caught pieces of it. One of the guys sounded really familiar but I couldn't place his voice. Who was it? dick embergThanks. Sounded more like a basketball voice to me. FWCIU.
  12. Also, I'm rooting for Colvin to turn this thing around with a quickness, so I hope the GWRBI buys him a little more favor than however much he had left before the game. I definitely think he's skilled enough to be an asset with this team.

  14. I like how the catcher is too busy giving Verlander a wtf look to figure out where the ball was going.
  15. I still wish Quade would use Marshall more often as the setup man. Don't we have a pending need for long relief? I like Marshall better for that.
  16. So glad to have Woody back and to see him healthy and effective. Also glad to see him touch 96 on the radar.
  17. I haven't spent a lot of time testing yet, but I get two SD and two HD feeds for nearly every game. I've been operating under the assumption that it's one broadcast per team, and so far that's been the case. The first listed game is for the road team, second is for the home team. I think tonight's will be the first WCIU game i will have seen.
  18. that certainly depends on your tolerance for listening to terrible broadcasters, granted they're not all bad but a bunch of em are so bad that lower resolution is an acceptable trade offIf it's not Rob Dibble, Mark Grace, or the Hawk-Stone combo, I'm willing to give most commentator crews a shot. I can handle Jim Palmer okay, so I figure I could handle most broadcast teams which aren't notoriously awful.
  19. This is my first season with mlbei, and I haven't lived in the Chicago area in 12 years - what impact will these various lousy channels have on the feed I'll be getting? When would I be better off going with the other team's broadcast?
  20. Yea, I'm not very big on instant replay, but if they're going to have it, then just have it for anything that isn't balls and strikes or the "neighborhood" "rule" for forceouts at second.
  21. Fair enough. I guess I just draw a line between "front-runner/fair-weather fan" and "someone who follows his team and keeps a day-to-day knowledge of the goings on of said team but chooses to maintain enough of a distance to keep it from crossing the line from entertaining to significant negative impact on mood and on the people around you." When I flew in from California for the weekend with tickets to game 4 of the Cubs-DBacks playoff series, I sat in the Cubbybear and watched game 3 erase the value of my tickets. I sat there so pissed (in both the American and European sense of the word) I couldn't see straight. I was even more pissed that the room was packed wall-to-wall with Cubs fans who had gotten over the game and managed to have a fun night in the city. I decided that if it stops being fun, there's no point. I guess that makes me less of a fan. In before thread split. Total man crush on Castro.
  22. It's kind of snobby and near-sighted to assume that's what it means when someone loses interest because of failure. If you're the type of fan who lives and dies with the team, then you and your family could very well be better off if you distance yourself from the team rather than sit through every inning of August 2006 Cubs baseball. You're no less of a fan, you just enjoy sanity.
  23. I know 12 games is still a small sample size, but it's definitely an impressive stretch of time to maintain an OPS over .900. Regardless of the team's success, this season is going to be fun to watch.
  24. Actually, I knew that. I do understand your confusion, as I didn't use green font.Your understanding of his understanding of your confusion confuses me.
  25. I'm not in favor of giving Castro a day off for any reason that doesn't specifically center around Castro. Though I certainly Enjoyed Jeff Baker day and wouldn't mind seeing a repeat. Any time I say Wandy's full name, I can't help but to do it in this voice: http://www.morethings.com/fan/blazing_saddles/madeline_kahn.jpg Zambrano beats this punk today. Cubs win 6-1.
