  1. I don't think it wastes it. The Nebraska and Colorado moves were necessary to put things in motion. If The Big 12 stays together, there really wasn't much more they could do to attract Notre Dame aside from going after 2 Big East schools. But that carries a big risk. They didn't want to be the ones to destabilize the eastern conferences alone. It required the SEC's help. This would just be phase 1. Phase 2 comes in a couple of years or so and Notre Dame shouldn't be less of a possibility then than it was a month ago. If anything, I think the discussions/negotiations the Big Ten has had with Notre Dame during this time will help set things up later. Agreed. I don't see the chances of adding Notre Dame in a few years as any less than they are now. I think Nebraska is about as good of a fit as anyone outside of Notre Dame. You could argue Mizzou because of basketball and the STL/KC markets but Nebraska has more of a national brand. They won't be what they were in the 90's but I think Bo will have them relevant. I'd rather have them than Rutgers/UCONN/Maryland, etc.
  2. I hadn't thought about the impact of an Iowa/Nebraska rivalry. That could be huge. Not just that but I think it can be better for Iowa to really be competing with Nebraska/Wisconsin (and the occassional good Illinois/Northwestern year) for a division and having one neutral-site game to take down OSU. Plus having two conference games with Nebraska in basketball can't be a bad thing.
  3. If the Big 12 doesn't collapse, possibly nothing. This would have triggered a chain of events that would have left a lot of instability on the east coast. But if the Big 12 stays together, I don't think Notre Dame has much more of a reason to join the Big Ten. And unless the Big Ten gets Notre Dame, I don't think we're going to see any additional expansion. They'd be wise to hold off a few years for this to start up again and not handcuff themselves with schools that expand the footprint but don't add much else. And that's the best case scenario in my opinion. There's not much motivation to add anyone besides Notre Dame if the other schools stay at 12 or fewer. With Nebraska you've helped your football profile by adding a national program, added the potential for a big money championship game and did it with a good fit academically, stylistically and geographically. The other schools don't do that. Plus I think it's good for Iowa.
  4. Iowa and Wisconsin are the latest to offer Jarrod Uthoff. He now has Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Butler, Arizona State, Iowa State and others. I still cannot believe how much he's blown up this spring/summer.
  5. That was what most people originally proposed. From a national and tv standpoint I think it works better this way. Penn State is always going to be a good program or at least a threat to be very good with their tradition, resources and in-state talent base.
  6. I do not think you can realistically create divisions that takes Penn State away from all its nearest opponents, and puts them in with all of their furthest opponents. Why not? They fly to every opponent as it is and if divisions only really matter for football where you have only 4 road games per year I don't see it as a big deal. Having a top 3 of PSU/Nebraska/Iowa vs. a top 3 of OSU/Michigan/Wisconsin is as equal as you can find from a competitive balance standpoint. The rest of the league falls in line geographically and from a rivalry standpoint outside of Wisconsin.
  7. The Big 12 is still down Nebraska and Colorado. Right, I meant the conferences that were rumored to expand (Pac, Big 10, SEC) would stay at 12. It sounds like the short-term plan is for the Big 12 to stay at 10 if they can keep them all in the fold. Of course they would have the opportunity to add TCU and one more down the road to be able to have a championship game again.
  8. Chip Brown saying that UT will stay in the Big 12. If so and if A&M stays, the Pac-10 probably adds Utah and everyone stays at 12.
  9. What do Big Ten fans think of these divisions? I think they're the best suggestion I've seen yet. Here's the link with his rationale: http://www.cleveland.com/buckeyeblog/index.ssf/2010/06/big_ten_expansion_details_how.html
  10. Now our insider says Don Beebe is making a huge push to keep the Big 12 afloat that is actually making everyone rethink their moves. Even still, I expect us to bolt to the SEC. If we don't, I will be pissed. Why? Why would I be pissed? I am sick and tired of Texas bullying everyone else around. There is a reason this conference is a mess right now. They want everyone to bow down & kiss their ring and we have enough power to stand up to them once and for all. I'm sure Beebe has made plenty of concessions to convice the horns to stay that would give them an even bigger advantage than they already have. True. From an outside perspective, A&M is a better fit and has a better chance at competing in the 10-team Big 12 than the SEC.

  12. It's speculation from an SI writer originating here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/jim_kelley/06/10/leighton.blackhawks.notes/1.html Also a piece with Niemi's agent saying there will be no hometown discount. USA Today writer speculated that he'll demand $4M.
  13. Is that what all that "buzzing" sound is behind the games? It sounds like a massive swarm of killer bees is hovering over the stadium the whole damn time. They're called vuvuzela horns. They're absolutely intolerable. Not only that, but I know nothing about soccer so I can't watch the game on mute. Get rid of those things yesterday.
  14. Where is this from? I still wonder if they might put PSU in the "west" division even though it makes no sense geographically. It would only affect football and they fly for every game anyways. I could see them wanting to avoid the appearance of a Big 12 North/South imbalance, though the Big Ten West would be stronger. If not, having Wisconsin and Nebraska as the top competition between us and a one game shot at the title every year? Yes please.
  15. Iowa vs Nebraska could, potentially, develop into a pretty good rivalry. Not as good as that Iowa-Iowa State rivalry could be though. This. If only there were some way for those teams to play each other... To think of all I've been missing my entire life.
  16. I want that Friday after Thanksgiving national tv game with Nebraska. Forget Minnesota, they can play Wisconsin on the last week of the year.
  17. Stone and Kaplan are well-liked enough in Chicago because they play on everything the meatheads want to hear, not because they're right. Mainly because they believe in meathead principles and that goes over well just about everywhere with sportz fans.
  18. About 5-10 minutes after the winner the other night I was kind of bummed that there were no more games. I enjoyed this entire NHL playoff season more than any professional postseason I can remember. I've got the 4 Stanley Cup wins, 3 Sharks wins, 2 from the Canucks and game 5 from Nashville on the DVR.
  19. Duncan's speech was the best part. Quoting it won't do it any justice. So understated.
  20. Waiting for Notre Dame to change their mind, be added as the 12th team and stop there. Sorry Nebraska.
  21. Why? I don't get it man. Your team just won the Stanley Cup, why spend even 5 seconds looking to see what your rival thinks? Their rival fans, of course that's what they're going to do. If the Vikings or Packers won the Super Bowl last year you and Bears fans would be saying how lucky they got or how they won't be as good next year. It's just what happens.
  22. Not only that but you could argue that ISU would actually take away money from the existing Big 10 schools. They add nothing really and would just take another piece of the pie.
  23. Yes it's about money. So how does Iowa State bring in money? They add no tv revenue, they have a small stadium and they're not a draw anywhere on the road or television. It's clear you really don't know what you're talking about. Iowa and Iowa St. could quickly become a rivalry? Apparently you're unaware they already play each other every freaking year. Yes God forbid we lose the Mizzou/Kansas rivalry that packs stadiums because no one goes to other Big Ten games. Boise State? Just stop. Awww.... is someone cranky today? Not a bit, I'm in a fantastic mood. You just have no idea what you're talking about. You want to create an Iowa/ISU rivalry when they've played every year for 30 years. You think Boise St. would be part of the ultimate group. You want to keep the Mizzou/KU football rivalry going because it would pack stadiums. At the same time you say it's all about money you suggest moves that make no financial sense.
