  1. Lugo was exonerated.
  2. I would have much, much rather faced the Giants next weekend, but I think the Bears have a very good chance of advancing the NFC Champsionship regardless of who they'd face. Steve Smith had a big game last team they faced off and the Bears still won. I wouldn't expect the same results in Smith puts up 10 catches for 150. I just hope John Fox forgets that he can run the ball again.
  3. You are correct. All references to Neifi as a projected starter, or to Walker as the 3rd string 2B, have come from Kiley. Neither Bruce Miles nor Paul Sullivan have ever made either of those claims. And obviously Bruce has specifically said the Cubs signed him with a reserve role in mind. (Of course, when they signed him they probably assumed Walker would be long traded and that Furcal would likely be acquired before now... So even if they did see Neifi as a reserve when signed, given subsequent disappointments perhaps they have changed their view by now, who knows.). I don't really believe Kiley knows much on this, though. If the Cubs were going to start Neifi and Cedeno, why wouldn't they keep Neifi at SS, where he's played most of his games and has done so very well, and of course has tenure? And move Cedeno to 2nd, where he might be excellent and where his erratic throwing arm might not result in as many throwing errors? Seems to me that if Dusty is going to count on a veteran to start, out of deference to the veteran he'd keep the veteran at the veteran's preferred position. Summary: if Neifi was projected to start, he'd start at SS. That Kiley is suggesting Neifi will start at 2B probably means Kiley doesn't really know what is likely to happen. craig, nice analysis as usual. More than likely, I'd say no one in the Cubs organization is sure who will be the middle info combination in 2006. There are still so many factors up in the air: the Miggy fiasco, trading Walker, proper utilizing of Perez, the seemingly forgotten Hairston, Jr., and the expectations vs. reality of starting Cedeno everyday. Spring Training will be extremely interesting this year for no other reason than to see how the final 25 man roster is constructed and who is penciled in for 2B/SS.
  4. against the spread would be the only way. straight up...the Pats no question.
  5. IIRC, Marrero was DFA in 2005 and then signed with the Orioles as a Free Agent. Wouldn't be a bad option off the bench.
  6. NFC Wild Card round: #5 Panthers at #4 Giants #6 Redskins at #3 Buccaneers AFC Wild Card round: #5 Jaguars at #4 Patriots #6 Steelers at #3 Bengals NFC Divisional round: 3 Buccaneers at #2 Bears 5 Panthers at #1 Seahawks AFC Divisional round: 3 Bengals at #2 Broncos 4 Patriots at #1 Colts NFC Championship: 2 Bears at 1 Seahawks AFC Championship: 3 Bengals at 1 Colts Super Bowl: 2 Bears vs. 1 Colts at Detroit
  7. Let's not forget, the Brewers were a better team than the Cubs were in 2005.
  8. I could be way wrong on this but it seems like all the articles that mention Perez as the starting 2B are from Kiley or in the Sun-Times.
  9. New update: Hendry was hoping that Pittsburgh would send cash to offset the difference between Walker's $2.5M salary and Wilson's arbitration eligible salary (could be $4.5M). Pittsburgh will not send cash, and Hendry views Wilson as too expensive for a 4th OF role. No deal. The silver lining of all this could be we end up having Walker to start at second base next season. Hopefully, but I think realistically all this means is that Hendry will dump Walker for much less, simply to get him off the roster.
  10. anybody have a link to check the number of runs scored by HR per team in 2005?
  11. there should be an 8 team playoff to determine the best team in college football.
  12. Today was a pre-post season game, nothing else. Health was #1 priority for key players & the Bears accomplished that. not a maker or breaker but what about McGowan? any updates on his status?
  13. looking forward to the 14th/15th. today's game was terrible, forget it and move on.
  14. ESPN has an update scrolling across the bottom of the screen, saying Orton is starting tomorrow.
  15. With all my experiences at the Lambeau, I'd agree here Sulley. There is always a respect factor amongst both fan bases. Maybe it was a little different for me because the times I was there, the Bears were terrible. Viking fans treatment of Bears fan on the other hand is a different story. Bunch of jerks.
  16. That's great news but interestingly on Sportscenter last night, an anchor said the Bears can still miss the playoffs entirely even though one win clinches a bye and homefield. Strange.
  17. I agree and think that all Prior needs to do is avoid injury to do that. If he makes 30+ starts, he should contend for the NL Cy Young, along with Zambrano. p.s.- I understand that staying healthy and getting run support are both big ifs for these fellas to compete for a Cy. Just curious.....what if he stays healthy and has an average season? Say 11-12 wins.....not spectacular. Then what? Is it because he still hasnt overcome injuries? Or...because of Dusty....or? I guess I'm asking if there would be a circumstance where Cub fans might come to the conclusion that he was not going to be the dominant pitcher we all hoped for? That maybe big league hitters can hit him? If Prior puts up 11-12 wins like Clemens put up 13 in '05 or Millwood's 9 win, I will be extremely please and every Cub fan should be as well.
  18. Mark Teixeira 3b 4 years/$9.5M (2002-05) * $4.5M signing bonus (paid over 3 years) * 02:$0.25M, 03:$0.75M, 04:$1.5M, 05:$2.5M * drafted 2001 (1-5), signed major league contract 8/01 * agent: Scott Boras * ML service: 2.000 He's about to get pretty darn expensive. Boras was talking an 10 year contract for him last season.
  19. I've been thinking about this as well. There's always speculation that Prior will leave as Free Agent after the 2008 season and I can't imagine hearing his name floating around in trade rumors will help convince him to stay. Hopefully he handles it like a professional like everything he always has.
  20. wow. congrats to those guys. Kruetz shouldn't be listed and Wale should be. kreutz is the best center in the NFL, and there's not even a question about it anymore. Personally, I think the OL Pro Bowl selections are based entirely on reputation. I was probably overreaching with my statement but I'd still take Kevin Mawae over Kruetz. Olin had a terrible season in '04 and definitely didn't deserve to make it. This year, I think its as much lack of other pro bowl caliber C in the NFC than Kruetz's great season.
  21. Note: Its Mike Brown, not Alex Brown. Why? I'm not sure what exactly you're asking me to clarify here but I'm just making clear everybody knows which Brown made the Pro Bowl.
  22. Bruce, why is Hendry still set on moving Walker? If he were the trade chip for a rightfielder, I could understand...but that spot is filled. What beneift could the Cubs get from trading him? Is there something about him that we don't know, or is Hendry that clueless? Boy would I love to hear a candid answer tothat question. I always give candid answers, both here and in the newspaper. The Cubs, as Goony mentioned, are stressing defense, for better or worse. They don't seem to like the way Walker plays the position compared with other second baseman. There are pitchers who've also voiced concern about the defense behind them. The Cubs feel, again right or wrong, that if the defense can turn the double play instead of extending the inning, their pitchers will have a better chance. I, too, am dismayed by the Cubs' seeming lack of emphasis on OBP and OPS. From an offensive standpoint, Walker certainly would look good in the No. 2 spot. And for the money _ and considering what they spent for a lot of mid-level guys _ Walker is an absolute bargain. Walker might annoy them with some of his comments to the media from time to time, but that really has no bearing on them not wanting to keep him. It's interesting to note, however, that Walker has worn out his welcome with other teams. If he does go, I'll miss him, not only because he provides provocative and juicy quotes. He's one of the best guys I've dealt with. What do you think they are going to try and aquire for him? Thanks! I wish I knew. It looks to me like they now need a right-handed hitting backup outfielder. The Tejada thing is still alive, at least as far as the Cubs are concerned. Hendry hasn't ruled out more pitching help. How it all gets packaged (taking into account Patterson and prospects, too) I'm not certain. I'm expecting a Todd Walker for Kevin Mench before opening day.
