  1. Blanco is worth $1.5M IMO, but the rest is wasteful. How is Walker wasteful? If he's not starting this year, I'd agree. But overall, 2.5 mil for Walker is a solid price.
  2. But he has used Lee and Ramirez back to back. And he used Sammy, Alou, Ramirez and Lee backtobacktobacktoback in 2004, and AGonz/Grudz, Sosa, Alou, Karros quite often in 2003. Very true, I should have been clearer in my first post. I was more referring to his huge reluctance to have a RRRR or LLLL somewhere in the lineup. It seemed at times last year that he was adamant about breaking up the blocks of those hitters no matter what.
  3. Walker should bat 2nd but I really can't see Dusty going back to back with two left handed hitters. He wouldn't use to monster right handed bats back to back in Lee and Ramirez. I can't see the same situation at the top of the order being any different.
  4. I'm not worried about Cedeno not having good OBP. He should have anywhere from .350 to .380 OBP. Murton can match or even surpass that, but his higher SLG% is better suited for driving in runs. cedeno should have a .350 obp? what? I'd be ectastic if Cedeno puts up a .350 OBP. While Murton was very good during his rookie season in '05, I don't think he should be expected to match or surpass a .350 OBP either. This offensive is shaky as is, if Murton and/or Cedeno aren't at least adequate, the Cubs will struggle tremendously.
  5. Great point. I don't quite understand it either. I'm walking away if they put a flag pole on a 8 foot mound in the middle of centerfield.
  6. I'm not crazy of the offseason but saying the Cubs are Devil Rays with fewer prospects is ridiculous. The Cubs could very well contend for the division title, numerous things would have to fall into place but its not out of the realm of possibility.
  7. If the bullpen is going to be as good as advertised, there is no way the Cubs should carry 12 pitchers. A major piece of this off season was improving the pen, it would be completely counterproductive to keep those arms rusty in pen. The bench is pretty weak and an additional bat would be much needed.
  8. Give me a break. Get off your high horse.
  9. 2003 Marlins: 15th in MLB with 333 OBP. Pierre had 65 steals, but he was also caught 20 times. They had 150 SBs as a team. 2005 Sox: They were 24th in baseball last year with a 322 OBP. Podsednik had 59 steals, caught 23 times. Aside from him, they really didn't have a whole lot of speed. That being said, I hope they are going to try and manufacture runs, because if we go into games hoping to hit the 3-run homer to win, we are in BIG TROUBLE...you must agree with that... :?: I'll be waiting for at least one 3 run home run every game. Pierre and Walker get on base and Lee rips a bomb. No need to run into outs ahead of Lee and Ramirez. What if Pierre is on 1st and Perez is up with 2 outs? I would expect the usual swinging bunt dribbler to 1st base.

  11. WCIU is a terrible channel. I really hope all future Cub games are removed for the cable accessish fuzzy station.
  12. Is this really a speed based team though? Outside of Pierre's plus speed, I don't see anybody will great speed. Hairston probably, but only in a limited role. Hopefully Cedeno and Jones can show some speed, but this team doesn't seem like one that is based upon speed or getting on base.
  13. If this is true, why hasn't it been mentioned in any of the papers? It seems to me, if this is true, this would be huge news.
  14. I see Walker heading into Spring Training with the Cubs, but I don't see him leaving. I expect a team to lose a 2B due to injury and then the Cubs moving Walker to that team for far less than what he should be worth.
  15. That's the very scary part of heading in 2006. This team is very average offensive, the 3rd best hitter will most likely be traded for who knows what before opening day. The 1st/2nd best hitters (Lee and/or Ramirez) can both be free agents after 2006. Jim Hendry will then have to go out and pick up huge bats next off season. He will simply have no choice. There's very little power coming from anywhere else in the lineup.
  16. Of course not. I'd say it comes down to everyone being blamed, especially the players, whom I'm told get drilled in it every spring training. There doesn't have to be a scapegoat for everything. I don't think he was so much complaining, as he was trying to answer questions. And I believe he's entering into the third year of his contract. '03 '04 '05 '06-4th and final year.
  17. You like excuse making, undue credit taking, feel sorry for me type guys? He didn't make any excuses. He said he wrongly assumed that players would have such basic fundamentals like bunting and covering first base. How can he continue to "assume" this? Its been this way ever since he arrived in the spring of 2003. For as much as he talks up wanting to be a fundamentally sound team in the media, it doesn't appear that any of his teams over the past three years have improved at that whatsoever. I'm not sure that's a valid point. Who has been on this team since he arrived? Other than Wood, Prior, and Zambrano, everyone else has been brought in or brought up. Does that absolve him from being responsible for how his team plays? Sure, the players themselves ultimately are responsible for their play, but the manager can't sit there and complain about how fundamentally unsound the team has been, especially when he's heading into his fourth year.
  18. I don't think so. You don't need starters to go 9 to justify going with 6 relievers instead of 7. There are enough off days early on to spread out the appearances. Dusty is a guy who will go with the hot hand everyday until he fails, and sit the last guy for 2 weeks at a time. It makes no sense to go with 12 pitchers, unless you have a great lineup and can afford minimal bench help. Over the weekend, Hendry made it sounds like its was more circumstances that the team carried 12 pitchers all of last year. Its inexcusable to do that again when one of the major focuses of this off season was to improve the bullpen. This bench is already shaping up to be extremely mediocore, they need as many bats as possible.

  20. It needs to be said: When does Hidalgo start to take ABs from Murton?
  21. Since the league went to 32 teams, the schedule works out very nicely. Here are the games the Bears will play every year: Home-and-home against division foes (6 games) Games against an NFC division (4 games, 2 home, 2 away) - 2006 is NFC West Games against an AFC division (4 games, 2 home, 2 away) - 2006 is AFC East Games against NFC teams that finished in the same place in their division as you (2 games, 1 home, 1 away) - 2006 is Tampa Bay, NY Giants This past year was NFC South, AFC North, San Francisco and Washington. Thanks for the explanation, bukie. I thought it worked out as smoothly as that but I wasn't piecing it all together when I saw the 2006 schedule.
  22. Can someone explain the procession of how the schedule is determined? I know the rotation of AFC division matchups, but what about the seemingly random matchups with the Rams and SF?
