    There’s many teams that aren’t clogged with number 3-4 starters and he’d have zero competition with his pedigree. His options aren’t constrained like a Collin Rae. I guess it all depends on the market for him. I’m not averse to the idea but I’d be extremely surprised if it happens.

    If they flip Cassie I’ll trust that they made the right call. Talent evaluation isn’t the issue with the front office. Reason having Woodruff would be odd is more so selling him the idea of joining a rotation where he’ll be fighting for rotation spots with 5 viable starters when Steele returns and he’ll command high AAV. He’ll likely win a spot if healthy though. For Cub standards I won’t complain.

    They’ll have a potential need in the outfield/DH if Cassie is part of any trade package. It’d be odd carrying Horton Boyd Cabrera Taillon Woodruff and Steele+Rae and Assad. I’d propose Alonso as a DH and RH platoon option for Busch but we know how averse Jed and co are to handing out contracts over $100 million. Adell doesn’t blow me away either having a lineup with 2 sub 300 OBP guys.

    I don’t mind it but where is the money leftover that would’ve been paid to Dylan Cease being invested? Will they sign Ryan/Gore/Cabrera to an extension?

    Traded for a cost controlled starter? If they’re outbid for any of the top starting pitchers on the market, perhaps. One that’ll likely be a rental a 1-2 rental, unfortunately. I’m not thrilled with Adell who’d be more of a buffer for Cassie to avoid the third base disaster of the 25 first half than an actual replacement for Happ or whatever they project Cassie as and haven’t shown the ambition to invest what they didn’t spend on a free agent pitcher in a DH option like Alonso or Schwarber. Ward would be fine I suppose, and the front office is more than content with fine,

    That covers 2026. I’m just wondering if the long term plan truly is an outfield consisting of PCA Cassie and Alcantara in 2027 and beyond hoping for a total of 5-7 WAR/season between the 2 of them? If that’s the long term plan then like I said they’ll have the $ and the need for an elite infield bat like a gunner Henderson if there’ll ever be a go all in year for this organization. They seem content with this pipeline of projected above average position players, and that’s contingent on accumulating similar WAR to Happ and Suzuki.

    I haven’t heard any reports that the Cubs are linked to Valdez but he seems like a perfect fit for the rotation as an elite ground ball pitcher throwing behind an infield packed with gold glovers. He’d have great numbers here.

    Does Alcantara have a future as anything other than a fourth outfielder with the Cubs? If they plan on trotting out a cheapest outfield consisting of Cassie/Alcantara/Conrad/PCA then I really hope they target Gunner Henderson when he hits free agency after the 2028 season.

    Right, but he signed in march. I don’t know where Burden ranked on their draft board or if they even considered the possibility of him falling to 39, so I wonder if he’ll supplant Duverney as KR1.

    That’s obviously why. As a Bears fan I’m not used to this level of execution of player development. I’m more curious about why Burden isn’t returning kicks. Is it injury prevention? It’s not a position that takes many reps to learn and he has the ideal skillset.

    Right, but it doesn’t always work how it’s drawn up with the Bears which is why it’s nice to see this happen on merit. Olamide Zaccheaus (Oz) had 3 drops yesterday and I hope we see even less of him as Burden continues to develop. The extra Z was unnecessary.

    I think it comes with the full package of his turnover avoidance. He’d rather take the easy yards. Perhaps it’s a lack of trust in his accuracy? Processing? I’d love to know where his eyes were on those plays.

    It’s the same story every week. He looks towards his primary read and if he’s not open he drops his eyes to the slot or tries to extend the play. Hopefully as time goes on he’ll become more adept at making full field reads. If he’s not planting his feet within 1.5 seconds, 90% of the time he’ll play hero ball because he doesn’t have a plan b when throwing from the pocket.

    Burden and Loveland are overtaking Kmet and Ozz. Nice to see Bears rookies contribute at this level. 222 yards on 18 targets for Burden and 248 yards on 50 targets for OZ.

    His pocket elusiveness and visual spatial awareness is a good as advertised. I’d like him to make reads faster so he won’t have to evade defenders so often but the sack avoidance and ball security are extremely under looked.

    Calebs sack rate is down 237% from last season. I’m ambivalent about him but you can’t take for granted his avoidance of negative plays and his ability to use his legs when he’s late on his reads.
