They scored at a 6.2 runs/game clip through 70 games from June 11th-August 31st. That pace wasn’t sustainable. Add Jordan Alvarez and we’ll talk. The only constant is a replacement level pitching staff. Any regression from the offense will derail the season, and that’s how it’s played out over the first 9 games in September. I don’t care about completion percentage. If he’s avoiding sacks, averaging 8+ Y/A with a 4:1 TD:INT ratio while throwing a touchdown on 7%+ of dropbacks them he can complete 57% of passes for all I care. ANY/A and volume correlate with wins and losses. -
There’s no question that PCAs MVP season and all the fun from June 11th-August 31st was just buttering us up for more disappointment. It’s what the Cubs do.

They’ve drafted 4 pitchers in the first 5 rounds from 23-25 while spending $490 million on 3 infielders plus contracts to Suzuki and Happ, with a higher AAV than any free agent pitcher outside of ‘s player option. The consequences are on full display. During this competitive window. I prefer investing more on the position side of things but there should be a lot more balance whether we’re talking free agent signings or drafting. Ayers, Alcantara, Triantos don’t help this team like an equivalent pitching prospect. I know there’s nuance to this but they don’t have an equivalent bullpen arm and the guys they flipped for Cassie and Mo aren’t working out. And finishing in second place with 95 wins because the brewers win 101 doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the fact that they’ll probably finish 86-88 wins and still an incomplete team. The Brewers are proven paper tigers.

Injuries or not, there’s not one arm developed by the organization in Iowa that can fill in on the ML roster and be an upgrade over any of these -.1.5 war pitchers like Thornton or Theilbar. It’s so bad that they’re carrying 3 inning eaters.

Pete and Seiya not coming through with 2nd and third one out was ultimately the difference. Latroy Webb is a comedy act at this point, the offense needs to come through there. This feels oppressive and shaping up to become the newest chapter in Cubs September collapses.
