35 runs in the first 26 of this homestand, 1 in the last 18. This is historical. Their run differential went from +23 all the way down to +4. It’ll really piss me off if they’re 0-6 at Wrigley versus the cardinals and brewers before the all star break. That can’t happen.

Difference between this year and last year is their inability to beat division opponents more than they lose to them. 16-9 at the break last year, 10-12 with 4 left as of now.

I don’t know where you’re getting these assumptions from about my thoughts and expectations of him as a GM. Your second paragraph and third paragraph are why I push back on the idea that he’s a bad GM. I’ve defended him. The topic is his imperfections as a GM and it’s pitching.

There’s an imbalance of bats to arms in the farm system and that’s been an organizational philosophy since Theo was in charge (sure, Wicks, Horton and Wiggins exist). You have Palencia and veteran free agents+DFA castoffs in the bullpen. Chalk it up to bad luck or simply luck of the draw but the lack of arms are hurting the team. And injuries are apart of the equation, no denying that, but there’s a lack of internal options and neglecting them past round 2 has reared its head. There’s no guarantee that injuries would impact every single arm either. Whether or not we like the process the results haven’t been ideal.

I just don’t like using the Brewers as an example. No one knows how they do it and evidently neither does their former GM who’s employed by Steve Cohen. Unless you’re Dave Dombrowski with permission from ownership to spend as much as he wants, which doesn’t always work, you’re stuck meeting half way between playoff contention while keeping an eye on 2028. Draft more pitching and stop worrying about attrition. Maybe if you had a few quality farm arms instead of blocked positional prospects, that $ spent on Maton, Milner and other number 4 starters could’ve been used on a legitimate top of the rotation pitcher. Easier said than done and it’s not like the team is crippled financially either like the Padres for example.

Ask David Stearns if a fringe top 10 payroll (top 2 and over $100 million more than the Cubs in his case) is some GM life hack to building a championship roster after what he ‘built’ in Milwaukee. Jed isn’t perfect but let’s not pretend that he has an unlimited allowance either. The Brewers, Rays and Cleveland are outliers. His biggest mistake has been neglecting drafting pitching in the later rounds. Hence filling out the pitching staff with middling vets, eating away at the payroll thanks to a lack of reinforcements in the minors. Besides, it’s Craig counsels fault anyways.

In other words, the Cubs are the first team in history to win one game by 20+ runs but then lose the next by 15+ runs.
