    Yeah. It’s not sustainable playing at a 667 clip with a rotation allowing 4.5 runs/game (since Ben browns injury).

    The problem is it’s usually 5 runs or bust with a pitching staff that has allowed 4 or more runs in 55/97 games. The lack of a stopper in the rotation will become noticeable when the bats become human with the remaining schedule.

    Of the last 10 World Series championship, all 10 were top 10 in positional fWAR and only the 6th ranked 2022 Astros and 7th ranked 2021 Braves we’re outside of the top 5 for an average ranking of 3.3. On the pitching side 7/10 landed in the top 10, 5 landed in the top 5 and the 2023 Rangers were as low as 20th, for an average ranking of 7.5th. Cubs lead all of baseball with a 62.5 positional fWAR since July 31st of 2024 through 311 games. They’re third in offensive war, second in runs and 1st in defensive war by over 19 runs. They’re also 26th in pitching war yet 11th in ERA.

    I always thought that was by design but I’ve never read or listened to anything that meaningfully digs into the systematic aspect of how they operate. I’ll check that out.

    They still might. It was a minor trade. The Cubs aren’t done adding because they traded for David Peterson. I hope not at least.

    The difference is that Cardinals have always skated around a top 10 payroll, especially during the LaRussa and Matheny eras with guys like Pujols, Rollen, Edmonds, Carpenter, Wainwright, Molina, Holliday etc. the Brewers just horsefeathers out 90+ win seasons with constant roster turnover while exceeding projected wins by 10+ games year after year with a microscopic payroll. The Brewers don’t make sense. The Cardinals did on some level. Their wRC+ with RISP is 10 points higher their true wRC+ since 2018, they’re averaging 92 wins/season with the average war of an 88 win team/162. The Cubs since 2018 are averaging about 85 wins with the average war of an 85 win team.

    If the season ended today Ohtani, wins and PCA is comfortably in second place. The only thing that matters is how Much war you accumulated, not when you accumulated it. It makes no difference whether the Cubs had a 20-3 stretch followed up with a 7-22 or a 12-11 followed by a 15-14. They’d still Be 54-42. The logic is dumb.

    So for PCA to be considered league MVP, the Cubs would have to have finished exactly 3 games above 500 every single month from April-mid July and PCA would have to have finished each month with exactly 1.5 war. His detractors are comical.

    Yeah. He struggled against the Reds and Brewers going 1-20 and yet walked a a total of 9 times. His floor is so much higher.

    Cubs were 9-16 versus the Mets, Phillies and Reds last year. So far they’re 19-2 with 6 regular season games remaining.

    The pitching staff is too limiting to give me any confidence that they’ll catch Milwaukee, especially with the difficulty of the remaining schedule, even at full projected health. Palencia will help I guess, they might’ve avoided that blown 5-0 lead to Toronto and held on for the sweep on Thursday.

    He has an xWOBA of someone with a 103 wRC+, he’s at 79. Good bet that he’ll baseball his way back into the mid-high 90’s by seasons end.

    The second half schedule is brutal. Bregman and Nico have to get going. Both are trending towards career lows in wRC+ and by over a standard deviation.

    No reason to pretend that Hunter Greene is Bob Gibson throwing off of a raised mound guys. Better yet, pretend that he’s Bob Gibson, you’d have more than 2 hits against him in 12 innings.
