  1. I kept Marmol in a keeper league last October because I thought he would be the closer this year. That said, I'd prefer Marmol in the 8th inning of a 3-2 game and Wood as the closer in a 5-2 9th than the opposite. Did that make sense outside of the horrific grammar?
  2. My god looking at that lineup is just brutal. As much as Hendry and the Cubs take a beating I am sure glad those days are gone. My favorite part is that the guy with the .423 OPS is hitting 2nd. I'm not going to make any snide comments about Theriot for the rest of the day.
  3. Precisely. I'd imagine 3 wins is roughly the difference between Derrek Lee and Hee Seop Choi. It's like how everyone devalues defense except that it saves your starting pitchers. By extension, that taxes your bullpen less and means that you're not throwing Andy Pratt out there during the dog days of summer. When was the last time a Cubs team had a good bench? I'm not even asking for a great bench but a good one. I'm 28 and I can't say I've ever seen it.
  4. Am I the only one who sees Lou batting Theriot leadoff as a threat to Hendry? I'm sure everyone in the organization is aware that is a bad idea. His at bats could potentially eclipse his OPS (650 or so). Baseball Prospectus says that Roberts would net the Cubs 3 additional wins. I think it's worth 3 players to better our odds of a boring September. We all love Gallagher but a soft-tosser with strong command is no given of becoming an All-Star. Cedeno is no given to become a major league regular with his poor baseball fundamentals. Veal or Ceda could become dominant players. They could also turn into the next Mike Harkey. I would make this trade because it makes the end of our bench better. DeRosa would be a GREAT pinch hitter and bench player. He can easily eclipse 400 at bats with some of the fragile pieces of our roster. It will also keep a fringe Dusty Baker type player off the active roster. I would prefer a shortstop instead of a 2B. The question is: who is available? If we don't get Roberts, who is an impact player that we can trade for in April?

    Catchers

I also recommend Ryan Doumit. He's catcher eligible but he might play in the outfield this year. He doesn't even need to be great if he gets 500 at bats. I have him as Towles's backup in my keeper league. The only problem is that the Pirates might bring up McCutcheon and Pearce to play the outfield.
  6. Breaking news: The Cardinals trade Cesar Izturis to the Orioles for Brian Roberts.
  7. There's less risk since he's such an excellent defender. Derek Jeter makes $19 million a year. He'll remember this when he becomes a free agent. It's worth it.
  8. Who was ever suggesting just Cedeno as the main piece of the trade? I should rephrase my position. The Padres are a contending team with a weak offense. Their starting shortstop would likely be Cedeno if Greene gets traded to the Cubs. I don't think they want to open the season with him any more than we do.
  9. Shawon Dunston was my favorite player as a kid, but oy, that sub .300 OBP would fit in on the 2000 squad. No one mentions the severe downgrade for the Padres if they go from Khalil Greene to Ronny Cedeno. I think the Murton idea is much more palatable for San Diego. They would still require an extra piece. I'd feel lucky if we could get Greene for Cedeno, Murton and Marshall. I like Marshall but 500 ABs from a powerful SS are hard to find. Edit: Let alone a shortstop that can play defense.
  10. I don't know how much stock people put in Ron Shandler's Minor League Equivalencies. He gives Jose Ascansio a 111 Base Performance Value. That's Kevin Slowey and Jonathan Meloan territory. That's easily worth Jacque Jones, especially now we signed Fukudome.
  11. What would you guys say if Roberts signed with the Cardinals today?
  12. In related news, every free agent offered to sign with the Cubs for the league minimum.
  13. I would have no problem with putting him on the 60 day DL on April 2nd.
  14. LD% = Line drive percentage. This somehow spiraled to ridonkulous heights.
  15. Hey Wilco, thanks for bringing the focus back to the subject at hand. We're usually not so argumentative around here. We need to find something to grumble about after the Fukudome signing.
  16. Both Gagne and Turnbow got touched. I smell a lot of frustrating losses in Milwaukee's future.
  17. Fukudome should get the Cubs another Rookie of the Year award.
  18. This is a very good signing by Hendry. We're an average shortstop away from being the best team in the league. How much will Theriot improve this year?
  19. Tim, I don't know if you've seen the latest Sullivan article but there is absolutely zero chance that Cedeno starts at SS next year according to Lou. Lou made a statement to the effect that Theriot is "his guy" and that when opening day comes around Theriot will be playing SS. I think Cedeno is as good as gone or will be viewed as a back up next year. Lou is leaps and bounds better than Dusty, but I still find it frustrating that he, much like Dusty, will develop an irrational attachment to a certain player and then never waiver come hell or high water. I was going to comment that you spelled waver wrong but your way makes more baseball sense.
  20. Michael Lewis wrote a 2005 New York Times article about Mark Teahan. It's 9 pages of his psychology. It's a fascinating read: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/24/magazine/24BASEBALL.html
  21. How does everyone view Theriot's full ceiling? I see him as a .740 OPS guy with speed. I have him improving to the point where he reaches replacement level someday. I'm all for spending resources for an upgrade. I'm glad that Izturis and Matsui aren't considered upgrades. Tejada is intriguing though we'll be in the same boat soon if we go that route.
  22. The Yankees have paid $10+ million a year to the likes of Carl Pavano, Clemens ('07), Mussina, etc. That doesn't even factor in the hitters. I assume that the $20 million price tag is the least of the Yankees concerns. What this sportswriter so willfully ignores is that other teams can easily beat that minor league package. The Cubs could match that offer and our minor league system pales in comparison to the LA teams. If I were the Twins, I would tell everyone the floor is Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche and one of Clayton Kershaw/Chad Billingsley/Jonathan Broxton. First team to add a major leaguer or another elite prospect wins.
  23. I don't know if anyone posted this but here are the top similar Infante players through age 25 (Thanks, baseball-reference.com!): 1. Shawon Dunston (978) 2. Michael Barrett (976) 3. Jay Bell (969) 4. Dib Williams (969) 5. Dick Green (968) 6. Alex Gonzalez (967) 7. Jeff Blauser (966) 8. Andujar Cedeno (965) 9. Cy Perkins (965) 10. Johnny Berardino (964)
  24. It looks like the Angels will end up with A-Rod or Miguel Cabrera. That would make Brandon Wood expendable for them. He came up the ladder playing SS. What would everyone trade to have him fill the SS spot? His defense might be subpar and Wood's contact is weak but what power. Brandon Wood might even grow into a 25+ homer a year player. I wouldn't trade Rich Hill for him but maybe Marshall, Gallagher/Veal and Jacque Jones?
