  1. Everyone needs to keep in mind that it's still early. The Winter Meetings haven't even started yet.
  2. That's not true at all. I wonder where people get this stuff. We love the Cubs, the ballplayer love the money and playing ball. Shark would have been a top 10 NFL Draft pick. His bonus alone would be more than he'll make until 2011 or 2012. He also gave up money for a no-trade clause.
  3. I believe he was referring to the Harden and "potential" Peavy trades specifically. This is correct. Thank you for clarifying that. I think Hendry saw what a bad $10 million closer contract did to the Brewers. Hopefully the new ownership will open their wallets to rebuild the minor league system. Some Boras Babies typically fall due to signability. Shark was a 5th rounder because he only wanted to be a Cub. Perhaps more winning seasons will breed that type of commitment.
  4. What? Why did you include that? I thought I'd throw a bone since this is a Peavy thread.
  5. The Cubs probably had the best roster 1-25 in the NL last year. They won 97 games. Hendry acquired Harden and potentially Peavy without losing major league, All-Star talent. Hendry may not be Branch Rickey but calling him bad at his job is absolutely ludicrous. At some point you have to blame the players.
  6. I was bummed until I read this Tribune article that made me laugh out loud. I thought it was the Onion for a second. Check out the headline: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-02-mitchelldec02,0,7758848.column
  7. Hill may figure it out but he his clock is only running through March. He needs to be kept on the major league roster like a Rule V pick or he has to go on waivers. He wouldn't survive the waiver process because someone else would keep him in the majors to figure everything out. That might take years. The choice is including him in a deal to get a top 5 pitcher or risking losing him for nothing in 5 months.
  8. I remain dubious but I'll start researching comparisons to the 1991 Atlanta Braves.
  9. Piniella is probably saying what Hendry wants him to say. I don't think everyone understands the concept of negotiations. We're the only team left standing on Peavy's list of clubs he'll accept a trade to, and Towers has basically been ordered to trade him. The Cubs (mainly Hendry, Piniella needs to support him) need to show that they don't need Peavy as much as SD needs to get rid of him, and that we're willing to walk away, in order to keep the upper hand in the negotiations. As soon as it becomse obvious that we need him more than SD needs to trade him, then it's easier for them to ask for more from us. Piniella doesn't dictate who is on the team. His only role in these offseason talks is to support Hendry's role in negotiations. Smartest analysis I've heard all thread.
  10. I heard Halladay got traded to the Marlins for Jose Ceda.
  11. Chone Figgins put up the following OPS+ stats over the last five years: 103, 101, 85, 117, 82. The good news is that he should be cheap. The bad news is that Figgins turns 31 this year. Juan Pierre was 29 when he started to suck.
  12. ugh I hear Brian Roberts might be available... Someone unlock the Brian Roberts thread. I dare you.
  13. Did anyone see the update on http://www.thecubreporter.com? I'd like Peavy but this refreshing this thread makes up for my http://www.fivethirtyeight.com fix.
  14. I posted this from my cell phone before I read DonnieD's lengthy post. Does anyone have any idea what San Diego wants from outside our system?
  15. Peavy would be gourd-shattering but am I the only poo-toucher for being hesitant? I don't want to disdain DonnieD but then again, he's a random dude on the internet. The historical ratio of those dudes being correct hovers around .05%. I hope I'm wrong but I'm not ordering a Peavy jersey. Obviously I hope I'm wrong. Hey, Jake Peavy, if you're reading this, I'll introduce you to a bunch of Kyle Farnsworth's old girlfriends in Lincoln Park. You'll have a fun time every afternoon for years.
  16. Jim Hendry was in position to wait last year. He didn't get Roberts and the team won 97 games. It's not like he was going after Roy Halladay because he had four rookies in the starting rotation. Time was not of the essence. If anything, it showed that Hendry is reasonable in the face of unforeseen circumstances.
  17. What does DonnieD have to say about Atlanta dropping out? He hasn't completely earned my trust but we're one step closer to: drop Wood, trade for Peavy, resign Dempster.
  18. What was lost in doing that? Respect. He basically said to every other GM out there that he can be jerked around for months and you won't lose him Like how Beane jerked him around over Harden? Or did Jim just bowl him over with his exorbitant offer that Beane had to say yes? And Beinfest's puppet in Florida? Yes you're right. Those examples completely prove that GM's didn't take note of the way the Orioles messed with Hendry for months. Good work. That last statement makes more sense if you read it as being completely sincere.
  19. True. He's also not bad. If they move Marmol to closer and use Gregg as setup (or worse), then I'll jump on management at that time. btw - I understand that Ceda has some chance to become a good reliever, but very few relief prospects ever reach the level of Marmol's performance over the past couple years. Ceda's chances of reaching that level aren't substantially better than, say, Ascanio's because the chances of anyone reaching that level are so remote. Blunt truth after blunt truth. That's why Tim's the head dog around here. I rather like Ascanio's potential. His minor league numbers pop out of Ron Shandler's book.
  20. The Cubs should give Wood a ring and 2009 World Series share. What is your favorite non-May 1998 moment? I'll never forget his behind the back catch against the Braves in the 2003 playoffs.
  21. I keep refreshing this expletive thread hoping there are ten new pages, Nomar and Harden-style.
  22. Does anyone think that there are more deals coming? Perhaps the Nats heard that Willingham's back problem is chronic.
  23. Why do I feel like this discussion has just gone in a circle? Sorry if that was a repeat. I stayed away from the boards since that Dodgers... incident.
  24. Via Rotoworld: Jake Peavy told reporters at the end of the season that he would not accept a trade to the AL. When asked about his trade stance again Tuesday in the midst of reports that he's on the block Peavy responded that he didn't "want to get into any speculation." His preference is important given the full no-trade clause included in his recent contract extension. "Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League," agent Barry Axelrod said. Alexrod added that "Jake would only approve a trade to a team with a solid chance of winning," specifically mentioning Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis as cities that fit "his and his family's lifestyle."
  25. You'd think the Cubs needed this game a lot more than the Mets. Not too shabby when your #5 starter hits a grand slam.
